  • Can't decide between a 3 or 4 rating.

While my firewood is already cut and split, I have a small fireplace and often need to split the wood one more time. Thought this would really do the job and the first time I used it, it worked well with the exception of a couple of pieces that I needed to re-position due to knots. Tonight, I did some more and had a lot more issues. Some of the wood tonight was oak (I've had it over a year so it's not green). Had several pieces that took 4-6 tries to find a way to split it. One piece I totally gave up on after about 6 tries. I saw a video of this splitter splitting a log 28 inches in diameter so doesn't make any sense this one won't do a piece of seasoned wood that has already been split. My back is full of rods and screws, so there is no way I can split wood the old fashioned way. Under these circumstances, it is an economical solution for someone like me. A lot times it did not totally finish splitting the logs so you end up having to wrestle with the 2 pieces to separate them. WARNING--Do not allow anyone to stand beside or in front of the splitter. I've had a couple of pieces of wood come flying off the splitter with a lot of force and end up 10 feet away. The first time it barely missed my wife's car and would have left a big dent. If it been a person, broken bones. ... show more

  • Good unit could use some modifications
Color: Red
This splitter works pretty good does a good job of splitting 99% of the wood i have , pine, lodge pole and fir. some of the lodge poll is a bit to hard for the unit. You do have to be careful with some logs because when splitting them if they are very dense this unit will send them flying and could hurt someone. My only problem with this unit are the following 2 items, The unit is to low to the ground needs to be at least 2 - 3 ft taller( i made a temp stand with landscape cinder blocks and a piece of plywood) otherwise you have to either sit down in a chair or kneel on the ground to operate it. the other problem is the unit requires both hands to operate you have to press and hold the power button at all times and with your other hand press down the ram control rod. other then those 2 problems it gets the job done even with logs wider then 10" ... show more

  • Don't buy. You need something more effective and reliable.
Color: Red
Item arrived damaged on one of the tubes that it stands upon in storage. After photos of the damaged box and the internal damage I called to make sure that the part did not affect the operation of the machine. They said it was OK and they would send new rubber caps for the tubes. Once the machine was ready to go, (you have to put the wheels on) I tried it out on a couple of 4-6" diameter logs of semi-dry wood and it would not split them. I was also alarmed to find you have to keep pressing the power button to operate the machine and this puts your face close to where the wood is being split. But I carried on as I wanted this machine to work. I tried a number of pieces of wood to little success. I got some older well dried pieces that were already split and tried to split them. The machine was successful, but when the wood split, the pieces were ejected from the machine with explosive force that threw the pieces 3-4 feet away from the machine and almost hit my back porch sliding glass door. Thank goodness I had set up the machine 7-8 feet away from the door or I would have been a really unhappy customer!! At that point I began to investigate why it would not split the wood. It looks like the blade was welded to strengthen the splitting edge but was ground to an edge offset from the center line of the splitter so the effect was to try to push a dull bar through a log instead of a blade. Not very effective. I was going to try to fix it by regrinding the blade to sharpen and straighten it but only if the company would let me have a discount for my time and the shipping damage. After all I should have been sent a working, undamaged machine in the first place but they refused and asked me to return it, so we'll never know if it was reparable. My advice...get a DR Kinetic Splitter. They are $200 more, but if you need to split wood, you don't have time to play around with a toy unless you have lots of already dry wood that you want to make kindling out of and don't want to do it with a hatchet. CONCLUSION: Don't waste your time or money on this one. It won't do the job for you. ... show more

  • I used to split up a cord of wood I had laying around that was tough to split by hand.
Color: Red
Now it won't split every log on first try, but there wasn't a single log it could not split, from huge birch to large oak, she always found a spot to start the split. Do not forget to loosen and tighten that valve at the end of you will damage the unit and make sure you have an extension cord rated for this units demand. I have contractor cord for power saws and it worked just find. The handles take some time to master, after a while I set a chair next to unit and had helper load the wood and I was able to use my feet to push controls to operate, back needs surgery and just had shoulder surgery so leaning forward crouched on ground was not doing it for me after an hour or so.. I would prefer different controls, and after warranty ends I will modify this unit to make it easier to use, The likely have it this way to insure operator does not become reckless and to avoid breaking off controls when stored-moved-used... Well worth the couple hundred for the work it can do.. and much quieter than a gas unit. My friend uses his in his kitchen.. I would not advise that, some wood will shoot 10 feet or more when split... ... show more
