  • False advertising
It is easy to use, portable, and I have split 13" green red oak 16" long with it. So far I have split two cords with it and worked fine. The motor is not as powerful as advertised. It is not 4400 watts, it is about 2340 watts 19.5 amps and 120 volts. It equates out to 2 - 2.5 HP not 5 HP. So it can be used on a 20 amp 120 volt household outlet. Unfortunately, I went through the expense of installing a 40 amp 120 volt circuit and receptacle in my work shop to accommodate the 5 hp motor that was advertised on the splitter. The seven ton splitter is advertised at 2200 watts. Do they both have the same size motor or is the 7 ton splitter also falsely advertised? Same size motor equals same splitting force? Does the 7 ton have the same ability as the 9 ton? If so I may have been ripped off. I can't get in touch Powerhouse all I get is an answering machine. ... show more

  • Performs well
This 9-ton log splitter does the job quite nicely and easily handles up to 12" diameter logs. It is quiet compared to gas powered machines. I like this log splitter very much! I rated this a 4 not because of how it performs, but rather these things. The instruction manual was inadequate. The instructions to put it together had very small and rather unclear pictures and rather vague and poor descriptions. I was not familiar with hydraulics and was unsure of how much oil to put in because it seemed it already had some when it arrived. I was able to assemble it but it took longer than I would expected if the instructions had been clearer and more precise. ... show more

  • Pretty nice
I dislike that you need to reset the power switch every time the splitter cannot handle a green log, but the maker advises not to attempt them. It was powerful enough to split an entire oak besides the first two bottom logs that were most alive. Overall satisfied with it's electric power, and it was able to function on a 30 amp breaker. ... show more

  • Very happy with purchase
I don't have the room to store a gas-engine splitter, if I did, I'd recommend that option. If your storage space is limited, or you can't tow a gas-engine splitter home, that's why I researched the electric-engine version. With dimensions of 40" long, and 20" wide, that worked. How about performance? I'm splitting red oak that was alive when cut down 2 months ago, cut up and sitting outdoors, so green and wet. I started with limb pieces up to 12" diameter. The unit stalled on one (when overloaded the unit "trips" a hydraulic switch, automatically retracts the ram, then the electric motor must be cycles to get back to splitting). Later in the morning, I tried that piece again and it split it just fine. Either there's some break-in period, or as the hydraulic fluid gets hotter, it flows better. I guess I'll find out with the next splitting session. The largest piece I split was 32" diameter, 14" long. The first of these I tried to split in half as the first split. After several resets, it split. The first piece had a knot. The second piece, same dimensions, no knot, I started by splitting off a piece on the edge. That worked better, no stalls. The "US" version has two separate operating handles that must be lowered using two hands because there are too many unemployed attorneys in the US. The unit includes a handle, for the rest of the world, that connects the two levers so that you can hold the log in position while running the ram with your foot. If you can't use this splitter without getting hurt, you needed to be out of the gene pool anyway. The instructions don't mention it, but there's a wing-nut on the ram end that needs to be opened prior to operation, and closed when finished for the day. If you forget, you'll hear the hydraulic pump really struggling. I had a few cc's of fluid leak out, probably accounting for heat expansion. Nothing dripped on the ground, just some wetness below the fitting. When this one wears out, would I buy it again? Absolutely! Nuff said. ... show more

  • This was about as good as the 5 ton
It was ok. I was upgrading from a 5 ton electric and this did slightly better. Still had trouble cutting certain hardwoods. I returned and bought a 20 ton gas. The electric splitters are only good for splitting small soft woods.

  • This is a Legit Splitter
I wasn't sure what to expect with an electric splitter and wasn't sure which model was going to be sent based on other reviews (many were sent the 7 ton model vs. 9 ton). I purchased the 9 ton model and delivery was on time and the unit was well-packaged. During assembly, I had to read the instructions several times and cross-reference the corresponding figs which did me no favors. Still, I was able to get through. During this time, I realized the manual that was sent was for the 7 ton model, which has a few different parts. The decal and motor clearly state it was a 9 ton unit. The instructions (written by someone whose first language isn't English) were adequate, but noted that the unit was not shipped with hydraulic fluid...so I purchased a some. Surprise....it was filled. I looked all over for 2 axle covers (as noted in the instructions) only to realize the 9 ton model doesn't have any. But now for the really good stuff....this thing can split! It runs quiet, is stable, and splits 12" diameter pieces with ease. All were extremely impressed and took turns splitting 'larger' pieces to the point that I now have to cut and save larger "all-nighter" pieces! Very pleased with purchase - you'll be pleased as well. ... show more
