Top Amazon Reviews

  • A reasonably priced option with few caveats - 3.75 out of 5.
Went with this one versus other similar products due to its price and I prefer the fold out/pop up design versus the 'build a PVC pipe frame" options. Taking it out of the box, the first thing I noticed was the quality of the storage bag. Feels like more of a thick paper (with a plastic coating on the inside) than the standard nylon bag most gear comes in. I only plan to use it in my home studio and fully expect it to fail at some point, so I'd definitely suggest using something more rugged if you plan to travel with it. Next thing I noticed was that one of the plastic feet from the bottom of one of the legs was detached. Figured I'd be able to just pop it back on and be done with it, but this actually appeared to be the result of another issue - the lower section of the leg that extends/telescopes out was stuck inside the upper section. Thankfully I was able to use a pair of needle nose pliers to reach in, pull it out, and reattach the plastic foot by gently tapping it in with a rubber mallet. Next issue was when I fully extended/expanded the frame - once fully expanded, I was unable to to press one of the red buttons to unlock it. This basically meant that I was unable to collapse it once I opened it... Luckily I noticed this before I tried attaching the outer blanket and was able to lay the frame sideways on the floor, remove the red button cover, and use a hammer and small nut driver as a punch. One quick, not too heavy tap was all it took to free it up. When taking the outer blanket out of the bag, it seemed to be OK quality, but not quite as thick as other moving blankets I have. But I have to say that it wasn't until I actually tried to drape it over the frame that I appreciated its density - it's definitely of decent quality. Obviously not "soundproof" but definitely helps tame reflections and slightly dull low-level ambient noise. Only other negative is the sewn-in floor panel. Besides seeming that it would be a slip hazard when placed on a wood or tile floor, it makes the setup more difficult than it needs to be. I wound up cutting the threads on the sides and leaving only the back attached - so it's like a flap. This way I can just roll/unroll as/if needed. I have yet to install the bottom leg braces. Seems like it would be a hassle to attach and detach these every time you want to set up/break down with the included hardware. I want to try and figure out an alternative with some type of quick release pins, but for now, I don't really seem to need them. Once it was all set up, I didn't notice any particularly strong odors, chemical or mildew (as mentioned in reviews for similar products) - maybe a slight hint of "manufacturing scent". But nothing a night set up with the exhaust fan running didn't take care of. I don't plan on using any of the included accessories, but they seem pretty cheaply constructed. Might be ok for a phone but not sure if I'd trust them with an expensive tablet. Would also be nice if they included some lighting, but added some cheap rope lights for ambience. One other consideration is that since it's fully enclosed and you probably don't want to run a fan in there while recording, it might get a little steamy during longer takes... ... show more
