  • Very good for hot tub sand and grit!
I bought this for one reason: to suck up the occasional small amounts of sand which works its way into our hot tub. Since I don't mind scooting around on my hands and knees while I'm in the hot tub, this looked like a simple, low-tech way to address the problem. I am pleased to report that, for this limited purpose, the device works very well. It is ingeniously designed to suck up the grit but keep the dirt and debris from escaping while you are using it (at least until it gets full......more on that in a moment.) So, if you have a hot tub and want to rid yourself of a SMALL amount of bottom-dwelling debris, this little device will do the job. The only thing which some people might find at least a little annoying (not me) is that you have to empty the device fairly often. I have an 8-person hot tub which had a small amount of sand and debris on the bottom, and I probably had to empty the device 10 times. Since it only takes 10 seconds to unscrew the top, toss out the water and debris, screw on the top and get back to cleaning, this isn't a big deal to me. (If you don't clean the device frequently, you'll find that after about ten "sucks", you will lose some debris when you squeeze the device to make the next pick up.) The device also works best on stuff which is laying on a hard surface. While it can be used for stuff floating or suspended in your water, you might "chase" the debris before you suck it up. I've seen some people ask whether you can use this on an actual swimming pool, and my advice in that regard is clear: Unless you are a Buddhist Monk and are accustomed to building sand castles one grain of sand at a time, you will find that cleaning an entire swimming pool with this device to be maddening. While it is effective in SMALL areas, it will take you several weeks to cover the entire bottom of a swimming pool. ... show more

  • Broken, kept my money after return
Product does not work. Leaves tons of residue on bottom of my cold plunge and leaks the few things it does pick up. Tried to return with everything fully intact and they essentially kept all of my money. Do not waste your time it is a scam and they won’t refund you.

  • Grit Gitter needs to be longer!
I purchased the Grit Gitter for a free standing hot tub at my vacation home. Over the course of 3 years since we installed the hot tub, I have had 3 different vacuum devices to clean the grit out of the bottom of the hot tub (they all broke!) So far, this one works the best, but it's not perfect. It does pick up most, but not all grit. It can also be somewhat awkward to use, as you have to put on a swim mask and hold your breath to reach some of the deeper corners of the hot tub(as a previous reviewer noted). I would give 4 stars if it was longer! ... show more

  • Best Bang for the Buck
Considering the alternatives, which to me seemed quite expensive, this little sucker hits the sweet spot of working well enough for the price. It takes a bit of practice to get it to work optimally, but once you get your technique locked in, you're golden. Debris may occasionally escape upon squeezing the bulb, but I've been able to minimize this to an acceptable level using these steps: 1. Point the head away from the grit. This will keep the outflow from step 2 from pushing the grit away. 2. Squeeze the bulb hard and fast. This will ensure the inflow check valve closes quickly and tightly, preventing grit from escaping the bulb. 3. Put the head over/in front of the grit. 4. Release the bulb as you move over the grit to be collected. 5. Move the head away from any remaining grit before the bulb completely fills, I'd guess around 2/3 full. Any grit sucked up in this last part of the stroke may not make it far enough into the device to get past the check valve and will thus get shot out on the next squeeze. Using this technique I've gotten quite efficient at my grit gitting. I even used it as a "critter gitter" the other day to save a spider that fell in! I hope it remembers this and repays me by feasting on some of these mosquitoes from my neighbor's stagnant water feature... ... show more

  • I love this so much!
Who knew that a hand pump pool/spa vacuum could elicit such a strong, positive emotional response? We put together a makeshift sitting pool using a (thoroughly cleaned) 300 gallon agricultural tank, but noticed a little bit of grit in the bottom after a month or so of regular, daily use. Because it's grit, the skimmer wasn't picking it up. Enter the Grit Gitter. The price is right, the colors are spunky, and the little foot at the end looks like a claw which we lovingly termed The Chicken Foot. This couldn't be easier to use and it is so wonderful at doing is job that I find myself a bit bummed that there's not more grit to git -- I mean, get. Check out the photos showing the fineness of the screen and the grit it picked up inside. If you have a spa or a small sitting pool, this is ideal for maintenance while you're sitting in it. The manufacturer also sells a reaching pole for it so you can use it from the outside as well but I've found it only on the manufacturer's website and not here. This little Chicken Foot end picks up all the grit down at the bottom! This beats any doubly expensive tool and it's so fun to use that you might find yourself dumping sand in your water just so you can use it more often [NOT RECOMMENDED!]. ... show more

  • One way valve insufficient
Good idea but the one way valve doesn’t close appropriately and so it shoot water and dirt out the front. Wanted to just do a replacement in case the one ordered was defective but that’s not an option. So will have to go through the hassle of return and ordering a new one to replace it. May just upgrade to a battery powered one but was hoping for a simple and small item. ... show more
