  • Love it!
Seriously? I can split kindling fine on my own. Ya, no. Not after this. Wow. The speed at which I can split kindling is amazing with this. Just place the log on top and give it a good hit or three with a 2# hand sledge. That's it. No more trying to balance the log so you can hit it, or worse, hold the log with one hand, hit it with a hatchet with the other, and hope to whatever deity you believe in that you don't lose a finger. I do hold the log with one hand and hit with the other. If I drive the log down faster than I thought it would, the big steel ring around the top won't let my hand go down far enough to hit the blade. Just buy it. I keep mine inside next to the fireplace and split kindling as I need it. ... show more

  • Competent for Kindling, Not Quite for Larger Logs
The idea of having a manual log/branch splitter appealed to me for quick firewood prepping without having to lug out my hydraulic splitter. Upon receiving this splitter, its sharp blade and sturdy steel construction looked promising. It was decently sharp right out of the box, ready to tackle the wood. The splitter's design is such that it can theoretically accommodate logs up to about 6" in diameter. However, reality proved to be a bit different. When I attempted to split a log of this size, it became apparent that it requires a hefty sledgehammer, and a good amount of force. The design necessitates two hands to manage the sledge, leaving none to safely hold the log in place. This is a safety concern as having a second person hold the log while another swings a heavy sledge is not a scenario I'd recommend. At this point, the hydraulic splitter in my shed seemed like a safer and more effective choice. However, when it came to smaller branches for kindling, the splitter performed well. It's essential to note that your physical strength plays a significant role in the effectiveness of this splitter. You'll need one hand to hold the wood and another to wield the hammer, which can be tiring over time but is manageable with smaller pieces. The construction, though robust, has its weak links. The welded parts, in my opinion, might be the first to give way after extensive use, although time will tell. I appreciated the suggestion to mount the splitter somewhere "permanent" for ease of use, but found the included screws to be on the lighter duty side, which questions the longevity of such a setup. In conclusion, this splitter is a handy tool for preparing smaller branches as kindling. It's a solid, compact design with a sharp blade that gets the job done for lighter tasks. However, when it comes to larger logs, the safety and practicality concerns outweigh the convenience it offers. It's a three-star tool for me personally, competent in specific scenarios and falling short when challenged with more substantial splitting tasks, but as long as it's used for light splitting tasks, I'm happy to give it four stars overall for its effectiveness. ... show more

  • Heavy, sturdy and sharp log splitter
This splitter is very heavy and out of the box is very sharp. I do recommend you anchor it down to reduce the risk of it falling over when you split a log (way easier when you can use both hands). I'm not confident in using this unanchored since you really need to hold the log with one hand and use the sledge with the other. For smaller logs, a 2 or 3 lb short handle sledge is fine. I would use a full sized 5 lb for bigger logs. Be careful not to hit so hard your sledge hits the blade and wear safety gear...especially glasses! I haven't needed to sharpen the blade yet, but I'm confident it will be easy. ... show more

  • Works ok for kindling, needs to be mounted to heavy base.
Out of the box, it was reasonably sharp and appears to be well-constructed. For my first use I tried to split a piece of very dry ash, about 4" in diameter and about 18" long. A problem became readily apparent - the ring around the top is so close to the blade that it requires a pretty good balancing act to get the log to stand up straight on the blade, as shown in the pictures. I guess you could hold the log upright yourself, or have someone hold it for you, but that kind of negates the main benefit of using a tool like this - safety. I used the back side of an axe as a hammer to split the log pictured, and it took a pretty good swing, and it still didn't split completely. If I didn't swing the hammer/axe hard enough, the whole thing bounced and I had to reset it. I do think screwing the splitter down to a heavy block of wood might solve that problem. In the end, I did use it to split some 2" diameter sticks for kindling, and splitting sticks that small would not have been possible for me to safely split without it. For the bigger logs, just splitting with my axe was much faster. So it's okay for making kindling out of small sticks, but it's much faster to just use an axe for anything larger. ... show more

  • Sturdy Design
I have a couple of these splitters that I'm playing with currently. This one is fully welded and made from more solid members than the others I have. I would say this is probably the stoutest one I've seen. The upper portion above the wedge is a little shorter than some. I had to hold the logs in place to get started. However, with a solid starting blow it was an effective splitter. I would characterize it as a medium/small size. It isn't too large that I would not take it to the campground. As noted it is quite thick, so it should hold up a long time with normal usage. I would recommend this splitter for those looking for a solid-welded, heavy duty tool. It has mounting holes if those are needed, and is works as advertised. ... show more

  • Works well
This is nice and heavy. Heavier than I expected, I have a different one that’s lighter and I prefer this one being heavier. Easy to use and splits the wood fine. Great for kindling wood. It’s nice and sharp for sure. If needed for more heavy duty use you might want to mount it but it has holes at the bottom so that you can. Overall it’s decent and I’ll continue to use it ... show more

  • Stong & Sharp!
This splitter is strong and sturdy and VERY sharp. I like that they provided a good sharp edge since that helps split the wood more easily. Just keep in mind that is it very sharp, so you will need to be a little more careful when handling and using, and it will require sharpening now and then. Seems like a durable well designed product. ... show more
