One of the things I appreciate about this system is that it uses your existing deadbolt, you just have to remove the inside part with a screwdriver and replace it with the Philips components. It doesn't take long, and it's easy to do. And if you ever change your mind about it, it's easy to put your old lock mechanism back since there are no permanent modifications required. The lock motor handles my deadbolt with ease, but if you have a lot of friction causing you to put unnecessary force into turning the lock, then you should get that fixed before installing this. The torque is good, but it's not a miracle worker. The app feels a little bit "prerelease" to me -- a couple of features are listed as beta features. It's not a crazy complex feature set, basically you have: -- Auto Lock: when the door sensor reads that the door has been closed for X minutes (configurable), it will lock the door if it's unlocked. -- Knock-Unlock: There's a 200m geofence radius around your house. If you are outside of the circle and enter into it (ie, you're coming home from somewhere), it will expect you to arrive at the door within X minutes (configurable). If you arrive at the door within that time, you have 3 minutes to knock on the door, at which point it will auto unlock for you. Good for a grocery trip or something so you don't have to fumble for keys or get your phone out. -- Vibration Reminder: Apparently this feature send you a notification if it senses the vibration created from someone knocking on the door. Personally, I have this turned off because the vibration sensor is an added battery drain. There's a door log that reports when it's opened or closed (you can also get notifications for this if you want), and the more expensive version comes with a pin code panel which I have not yet installed. HomeKit support would have been a nice addition, as would the ability to set a custom radius for the knock-unlock feature. The important components of the lock are all metal, but the interior rotating bit that you turn to manually lock is a heavy duty plastic. I would have preferred a lightweight metal.

I have been looking at smart locks for a while, but most require you to use the keying system contained in the product which is a problem if you live in an apartment complex that either doesn't allow you to change the locks or need approvals and to give them manager a key. I was looking for something simple where I could just replace the locking mechanism on the inside and take it with me if I decide to move without the bureaucracy involved living in an apartment. This was exactly what I was looking for, the only change was to the inside of the door so it uses the original lock and no change to the outside. It installed in less than 10 minutes including connecting to the app. The only issue I ran into was that the lock on my door requires a little pressure with pulling it so it latches correctly due to insulation around the door. I needed to adjust the plate on the door so it would lock and unlock smoothly, but this is a function of my door and not of this product.

The lock install easily over your existing deadbolt and converts it to a smart lock. If the batteries die, it still functions as a normal lock so no issues there. It’s black so it matches existing black hardware. My only complaint is the Philips app. I wanted to connect to Google home and it kept prompting for a pin. I’d set a pin in the app but it wouldn’t take. One call to support later, it was discovered that the connection to Google has its own pin that I needed to set. Once done Google can now open and close the lock easily.

This lock is sturdy, install is easy, and it is much more responsive and dependable than other retrofit locks I have tried in the past. It's a lot sleeker too, though it does stick out quite far. The major downside for me is that while the app the lock works with is compatible with SmartThings, the lock itself is ineligible for registration in the SmartThings app. This is unfortunate for those of us trying to switch to a mostly matter based, consolidated system with a hub. I know this app is none of those things, but several other wifi only items I have are compatible across a wider range of systems which includes SmartThings. I will find a workaround for now, but do hope that Philips is open to certifying it with other smart home apps in the future.
