Cons: • It's an electric razor that, like most other electric razors, just doesn't give a great shave. • The clipper blade is pretty much useless. Pros: • Good value • Reputable manufacturer • Cutting heads are surely much better quality than the ones on less-expensive generic brands, they are high-precision parts • Easy to clean • Stays charged a long time. Other facts: • It really doesn't work that well wet. This razor design was invented before it was possible to make waterproof razors, and it seems designed to work best on stiff and dry stubble. But being waterproof nevertheless makes it easy to clean. • It doesn't work so great on thick or long stubble. You have to use it every day and if you miss some longer hairs on your neck or whatever (which you will), you'll have to remove them with an ordinary razor. • It yanks the hair out of your face and you REALLY need a good moisturizing balm afterwards. I have never tried a cheap rotary-head razor and never will. I recommend that you don't either. From what I've read, the more-expensive side-to-side cutter electric razors are better. I'll get one someday. And of course traditional wet razors give by far the best shave. But given my budget and low executive function, this one is perfectly adequate. ... show more

    • Not great at shaving just below your nose

The blades don't go to the edge of the head of the shaver because the square-ish plastic bits go far beyond the circular blade zones. Because of this, if I'm trying to shave my mustache just under my nose I will have to work extra hard to make sure I don't leave any untrimmed. My other complaint is that the proprietary charger is inconvenient. I'd rather not have keep around a charger specifically for my shaver and nothing else. Ideally it'd be USB-C or even Micro-USB charged or something that's shared with other electronic devices. With that said, I've totally forgotten about charging it for what feels like a month and it still says it's at 3/3 battery life which is very convenient. Otherwise it's good. As far as getting a close shave with an electric razor, this is the best design Norelco has ever made. Firstly, this model is made in The Netherlands, which surprised me. Next, spacing the heads apart seems to help quite a bit. I own a 20+ year old model that still works like new, so it’s easy to compare the two. That one is pretty good, but this one is definitely superior. Over the years, Norelco redesigned their heads several times. The newer models weren’t any better, but Norelco could claim to be “new and improved”. Then around 10 years ago, they came out with heads that had dots and slots. I don’t know why, because that design was a total disaster. I guess they figured they had to do *something* to continue claiming “new and improved”. They still make models with dots and slots, all cheaper, low-end. If you’re considering buying a low-end design, don’t—JUST DON’T!! Strangely, Norelco sells models at double the price of this one. Some even as high as $250. OMG! And the funny thing is, you don’t get anything of value for all that money – just a lighter wallet. If you really want to spend that much on an electric razor, I’d suggest buying the Braun Series 9. That particular razor is well-known for giving the closest shave of any electric, bar none. But for a more reasonable price, I’d say this particular Norelco model 5300 is your best choice. (Others in the 5000 series are an older design that I do *not* recommend.) ... show more

    • Skin irritation for sensitive skin

I have sensitive skin and I was looking for a shaver that wouldn't give me irritation. I looked for a long time and gave up mid 2000's and just started using an Andis Outliner trimmer for my shaving. The outliner gives a pretty close trim (2 o'clock shadow) and I recommend it for anyone with easily irritated skin. After 15 years I decided to go on another hunt to see if shavers had improved over that time. I tried this shaver and found that they have not improved much since 2005. They irritate my skin with micro-cuts. I tried a braun 9310 and that one seemed to irritate my skin much less, but unfortunately it still misses hairs. I have to get out my outliner to catch them, LOL. BUT, there are some pros. The motor seemed quiet, maybe slower? The handle was ergonomic. And norelco is still using that easy flip up design for easy cleaning. If you don't have sensitive skin, this could be a good shaver, it catches everything better than my braun, it just seems like a slower shave. ... show more

I purchased this product because I have a hand and head tremor making it increasingly difficult for me to use a regular razor. It still takes me a while using the Philips Norelco but I no longer have to worry about cutting my self. I have never used an electric razor before and had reservations, I like the fact that you can use this razor wet or dry. I use it wet with shaving cream. It is easy to flip up the shaving heads to rinse periodically while shaving. It dosent shave as close but that may get better as I get use to it. It holds a charge very well. The only con I have is with the pop-up trimmer. It does not work well for trimming my mustache. The way the trimmer is positioned the razor head blocks my view, but it does well on side burns. ... show more
