My wall was more than 6" thick. I was lucky on the stud placement, although I was fearful of making a huge whole in the wall. I just tapped with my knuckles, and it was obvious. The instructions are excellent, and an oscillating saw worked perfectly. The design of the door is good because the flange is wide. It is paintable, and I caulked well. There is a feeling of cold close to it, and probably it's warm in the summer, but it's acceptable. My cat goes in and out all day, I think she just likes that little tunnel it creates. Only minor downside is that my 65 lb. dog is very jealous. ... show more

This installation is not for the inexperienced person who has not built up a stash of tools (or at least has a neighbor that has stuff to borrow ...). The instructions were well done and provided an excellent guide as to how to proceed to get the door installed through the exterior wall of my house. For the record I have a wood framed house with a stucco finish on the exterior. If putting this through a concrete block wall I'm pretty sure you would need the extra piece (sold separately) to ensure there were no gaps inside the wall for your pet to find and explore. As my wall was essentially the thickness of a 2x4, I did not need it. I rated "easy to install" as a 4 only because I had the tools I needed and knew how to use them all. If you don't have the tools or have never dealt with putting into a wall; definitely not easy. Oh, and critical, you will need some sort of scanning tool to check for studs, power, etc. in your wall before drilling or cutting into it. On the power tool side, I ended up using a circular saw, drill, and saws-all type tool. The drill needed both wood and masonry bits, and the circular saw needed a masonry blade to get through the stucco. Once the stucco was removed, I used the saws-all to cut the hole in the wood behind the stucco on the exterior side. I used a keyhole saw for the gypsum interior wall. It does come with both an interior and exterior flap but where I placed it, it should almost never be exposed to severe weather conditions although i believe the design would prevent even a heavy rain from getting through to the inside of the house. Of course if the weather is truly extreme, I would just pop in the piece to block the pets from using it to get outside anyway. ... show more

This cat door is awesome! We have an outdoor cat and have a condo for her in one of our garages. (She’s spoiled!). She can freely go in and out during the day and the slide that blocks off the entrance/exit is so easy to use. ( We keep our girl in the garage at night). This door is extremely secure and well made. There is a lot to like about this door if you plan to install in a wall like I did. Simple design, and the wide forgiving trim make it easy to install. The flaps close with a magnetic slider that creates a great seal every time the cats go in and out. The only issue I had was that there is no option for100% transparent flaps. This was a must for my cats who wouldn't use the door until I cut out a portion of the translucent panel and glued in a clear flexible plastic panel within each flap. Immediately after I did this one of my cats approached the door, looked through the clear panels and went outside - just like that. first time ever having a doggie door. installed. from inside wall to deck.. worked well. the hardest part was cutting through the walls. very good instructions. after the entry was cut, the rest went easily. looks good , just as shown. THE BEST PART, IS AFTER TAPEING THE FLAPS UP AS INSTRUCTED FOR THE FIRST DAY... my little dog has been running in and out on her own..
