I recently (3/2014) purchased this product after wanting one for several years for my dogs, and just got the installation finished. The product arrived as described, and was packed well. Fair warning - this product requires a custom installation on each home, and will require adjustment to eliminate gaps between the existing sliding door and the pet door. I'd call it a moderately difficult installation for a "weekend warrior" home DIY person (I do most of my own repairs around the house, i.e. install a new dishwasher, fix all the plumbing, etc, but don't put in new floors/tile, work on AC/heating, do drywall work). I found Charlie the Pug (5/2/12) and Dave's (6/18/2010) reviews useful for assistance with installation. Some changes to what they did in order to eliminate the gap between my sliding glass door and the pet door. I used Frost King White Rubber Foam Weather seal ¾" wide 7/16" thick 10 foot long roll for both sides of the pet door. I put it between the pet door and the sliding door frame (the part that you will never see), and between the sliding door and the pet door. I tried the EPDM Rubber weather seal that Charlie the Pug mentions, and found the Foam to work better. I suggest picking up both and using your intuition when installing. I also put three screws at the top and bottom of the pet door from the sliding door frame into the pet door instead of the 1 that the installation instructions mentioned. This made the door much more solidly fixed to the frame. I then put two screws on the frame side as the instructions mentioned (one 12" below the height adjuster and the other 1" above the pet door). One major change that I made from the installation instructions was not putting the dog door bottom around the sliding door track. The bottom of the dog door has a semi-circular cut out to fit over the track that your sliding door runs on. I put the dog door between the front lip of the frame and this track so that the pet door sits as close inside of the track as possible. I found that this made the inside edge of the dog door flush with inside edge of my sliding door, and also made it much more stable since it was tightly fit between the frame and the track. Other style sliding doors may not accommodate the pet door like this, but I found it helped me out. In order to eliminate the gap, I needed compression between the pet door and the sliding door. In order to achieve this, I went with a cam action sash lock that can be bought from my home improvement stores. The one I bought was from Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Line-Cam-Action-Window-Sash-Lock-U-9925/100166499?N=c3hcZ5yc1v). After the sash lock engages, the handle turns another 90 degrees, which provides compression between the two pieces. Brilliant! It took me 2.5 hours working solidly to eliminate the gap before I found this gem, and then my gap was gone! It also is an effective lock, as the sash lock they provide with the dog door is kind of wimpy. Because I am security minded, I also bought a security bar designed for small sliding door gaps ([...]). I have not tried this yet, but think it will be a nice addition to the sash lock for compression (eliminate gap) and security. Please note: the sash lock only eliminates the gap when it is engaged, so if I have the door unlocked, there is still a small gap between the dog door and the sliding door. I can live with this small gap, and do not really keep my sliding door unlocked unless I am going in/out of it. The dog door includes a plastic panel to put in as a security measure, and it seems solidly built. There are tracks on both sides of the flap to put the security panel. I think I may pick up a second to put on the outside for use in the winter to add an extra layer of insulation between my house and the cold midwest winters. Some other suggestions: the screws they provide are pretty weak. I broke several while installing. Got fed up and went to Home Depot and bought better screws that wouldn't break. Follow Dave's suggestion about the sweep between the sliding glass door and the stationary glass door, it helps to have some overlap. Be persistent in installing this door, as it is very useful and a good price. My dogs now love it, and I feel like I conquered Mt. Everest by eliminating that small little gap between the sliding door and the dog door. For sizing: I bought the Large/Tall. One dog is 67 pounds, lab/pit bull mix, who has 10.5" between the floor and his chest/belly (rise). His withers are like 21". The other dog is 58 pound lab/boxer mix, who has 10" between the floor and her chest/belly, and has 20" withers. Both dogs go through the door with ease, and the extra height of the tall riser (8.5" on the large/tall door versus 4.5" with just the Large door) looks like it would make a huge difference for them using it. My cat likes to sit on the outdoor balcony to watch the birds and the birds watch her. She would constantly meow to be let out and in again so someone recommended I get a pet door for the sliding glass door. I did not know that such an item existed. I did some research and this product did all that I needed at the best price. I was apprehensive whether it would fit. I measured the door frame several times and then placed the order. It fit just fine. Since I am a tenant I did not permanently install this insert for the sliding glass door frame. I also do not live on the first floor so burglars were not my primary concern. The insert has a spring mechanism at one end so you can easily insert or remove at will. The only problem I had is not even related to the product. The installer of the glass door did not level the frame and the entire mechanism leaves a gap. There are multiple videos on how to easily correct this but my sliding glass door is a lemon. There is no adjustment screw so I put in a maintenance request with property management. The maintenance person was just as confused as I was because there appears to be no adjustment screw. Also, my sliding glass door is not full width. So with the insert the space for entering and exiting is reduced significantly. In order to bring items in and out of the balcony I have to remove the pet door insert to allow enough room to access the balcony. Again, these are NOT issues with the product. The product is exactly what I needed and performs as promised. The glass panel is especially thick and durable. The issue I have is with the existing door frame and inferior workmanship that detracts from this great product. It was worth the money and even though my set up is flawed it works fine. Only took my cat about 24 hours to figure out the door. The dog took much longer and he is still timid. Magnetic closure on the pet door flap is secure and works well. I would strongly recommend.

I’ve owned this PetSafe sliding glass dog door since July 2019 and it’s now December 2025, so this is a real long-term review, not a “just installed it yesterday” take. First, the important part: this thing is amazing. I genuinely can’t imagine my dogs’ lives — or my life — without it. It works every single day, my dogs learned it fast, and it’s been absolutely worth the money. If you’re on the fence about getting a sliding glass dog door, just do it. That said, after years of real use, a couple annoying (but manageable) issues showed up. 1️⃣ Flap door hardware is weak The rubber flap is held on by very small screws with tiny heads. Once your dog gets confident and starts sprinting through the door like it’s a NASCAR pit exit, those screws can loosen and the flap can pop off. Fix: I added larger metal washers, which solved the problem — but that leads to issue #2. The plastic strip the screws go into gets brittle over time. Because of that weak mounting setup, the rubber flap doesn’t last as long as it should. 👉 Suggestion to PetSafe: This would be way better with a metal strip on the front and back to clamp the flap securely instead of relying on aging plastic. 2️⃣ Insulation is… not great This is basically a single-pane glass setup, so temperature control takes a hit: • Cold comes through the glass • Air sneaks in around the edges • More heat/cold leaks from the sliding door side You’ll notice it on your HVAC bill if you live somewhere with real winters or hot summers. Fix: Before installing, I added self-adhesive foam/weather-seal strips from the hardware store around the sliding door. That helped a lot. Honestly, the reason I’m writing this review again is because I’m considering buying a second one and installing it behind the first to create a double-glass setup for better insulation. Final verdict ✅ Rock-solid daily use for 6+ years ✅ Dogs love it ✅ Massive quality-of-life upgrade ⚠️ Flap mounting design could be better ⚠️ Needs extra sealing for insulation Even with the flaws, I’d still buy it again — and probably will. Just know going in that a few DIY tweaks make it perfect.

With summers getting hotter, my three big Great Pyrenees aren't handling the Alabama summers in their old age. Last summer I had to leave the sliding patio door open so they could come and go. If you live in a temperate climate or if this will be installed somewhere detached from your home, so air leakage will not ruin your heating/cooling bill, this is an absolutely perfect door as is! It looks good, super easy to install, the cats learned to use it easily, and I didn't see bugs being able to get through. However, if you live somewhere where it gets cold, I HIGHLY recommend making this a three-seasons door. This door is so easy to install and also remove (unless you use hardware to permanently install it) and store under a bed or a closet. I had purchased $40 of weatherstripping/insulation at the same time as this cat door. Despite that, I had to rip it all down during a cold fall night as my bedroom was absolutely freezing because of the air leakage. On nice days, it only takes a second to pop it in place. By the time the sun starts going down, I pop it in my closet. We have a tiny catio on our Juliette balcony, so it's more of a treat for the cats than a necessity and it's not a security risk for our specific situation. Before purchasing this cat version, I tried the large dog version of this (thinking our old dog may also like the balcony). It leaked SO much more air around the petflap that I returned it. I'm not sure if it was a manufacturing error or if that is just what the large dog version is like. When purchasing the narrower/smaller flap cat version of the door, the leakage was significantly better. I also spent an additional $40 on weatherstripping from Amazon to help the cat version, which further helped the air leakage issues, but still not enough to attempt keeping it up in winter. If I were to do it all again, I would have only purchased around $20 of thick brush weatherstripping to go the length of both sides of the door and just accept that it's a 3-seasons door. Oh, and the brush weatherstripping will not help the actual flap part. I tried but then the flap won't actually close correctly.

This worked out perfectly for me. I have had two Petsafe doors previously. The newer one (23 yrs old) I accidentally left behind when I last moved. I didn’t remember the brand and was confronted with a dazzling array of doors. I was quite a job finding a small opening on,the smaller of the two heights WITH a flap cover. I was so delighted when it came and was a Pet Safe. It is almost identical to the prior one. There is an improvement. Previously the doors had a SLIDING panel on to to adjust for heights the new design has this but it is spring loaded and a bit easier to fit in. I have never used weathering stripping or hardware with these doors. I out the door in,the track and close the slider then use a piece of wood behind the slider. This door is perfect. The first petsafe door I had cost $100 40 years ago and was not as nice (but just fine) as the two subsequent. I don’t know what I paid 23 years ago but this door cost less than twice the cost 40 years ago. I consider that a bargain. I have two cats. One has a lot of pet door experience. He went right out then spent some time outside staring at the door as if thinking “how did I miss this all this time?” The other cat has no experience but has often learned things from the more adventurous cat. Have high hopes. Finally this door says up to 15nlbs. My cat that has used it is quite large at 17 lbs. He had no problem slipping through.
