It was easier than I thought to teach my husky, German shepherd mix to use these bells. One the first day I told him to shake while holding the bells in front of my paw and them immediately gave him a high reward treat. I did this for about an half an hour until I was confident he was comfortable pawing at the bells. Then I hung the bells on my bedroom door and repeated the command shake with my hand in front of the bells. I rewarded him everytime he did it correctly and was patient when he didn't understand. After about 10 minutes, I started saying "ring the bell" enthusiastically and he fairly immediatly rand the bell. I gave him lots of pets and extra treats. I kept going for awhile and moved to different doors to help him make the association. I want him to be able to ask to get in and out of the back door and my bedroom. As a tip, do this before your dog has breakfast so he is more food motivated. I use dehydrated bison lung. The next day I went in and out of rooms with a bag of treats. As my dog followed me around, I told him to ring the bell everytime before rewarding him and then giving him a treat. A few times I would have him do in and out of my room with me to get extra practice time in. He started to ring the bell without any commands so I gave him extra rewards and pets of encouragement. The next day, I would walk a bit faster and go through a door before he got to it. Then I would wait on the other end for him to ring the bell so he could follow me. A few times I had to tell him through the door to ring the bell or crack the door to tell him so he could hear me better. By the end of the day he didn't need any commands to ring the bell. The next day, he only needed a few prompts to ring the bell early on. By the end of the day he rang the door bell independently without me instigating it by leaving the room! The last few days were very similar but since it's only been a week, I'm amazed that he grasped the conect so quickly. Hopefully soon he will start ringing the bells anytime he wants to go potty (without me on the other side/ already outside as provocation). I highly recommend this product. It was easy for him to learn how to use it and the material looks very sturdy. I would suggest securing the bottom of the string of bells because they hang very low and can get caught in the door easily. Great product! Make sure you use them on both sides of any door to help reinforce how it works with your dog. ... show more

We use these bells as a potty training aid for our puppy. He still doesn’t fully understand how they work yet, but he’s getting there lol. With him being a puppy, he likes to chew things, including these bells. He has not broken them or even made a dent!

I bought these a few months ago for our brand new puppy with the thoughts that it would be nice if they ended up working out. They have exceeded my expectations! Only after about a week of rubbing them on my dog's nose and making sure we were ringing them every time we went outside, she started ringing them on her own. But I'm sure that it works well for other dogs! It's well made and the sound is fairly pleasant and easy for a dog to make them jingle. Unfortunately my dog thought it was a fun toy and it did not work for us!

These bells have worked wonders we have two dogs and two cats that use them to go out to the backyard. Its cut down on accidents from our older dog and we can hear them most places of the house. They are long enough for the shortest pet to reach and adjustable.
