Frequently asked questions

For optimal function and cleanliness, it's recommended to change the PetSafe Drinkwell Filters every 2-4 weeks. This can vary based on how many pets are using the water fountain and the cleanliness of the water you are using.

These replacement filters are specifically designed for Drinkwell Ceramic and the 2 Gallon Fountain models. They may not be suitable for use with other Drinkwell or PetSafe Fountains.

The activated carbon in PetSafe Drinkwell Carbon Filters helps to remove bad tastes and odors from pet's drinking water, providing fresh, filtered water they'll want to drink.

Each pack contains 4 PetSafe Drinkwell Replacement Carbon Filters. This should last for approximately 2-4 months depending on the number of pets, their size and how often the water fountain is used.

  • In the online page it said it was operated by a 12 volt Battery (The Cat Water Fountain).
Size: Pack of 4 Style: Carbon Filters
I specifically wanted a Cat Water Fountain that was Battery Operated. I gave it as a gift to my sisters cat. She did not want a Fountain that had to be plugged in since water annd electricity do not mix,. Your online ordering page described it as run by a 12 Volt Battery, IT IS NOT!! This Fountaintain has to be plugged in! I am very disappointed with you Amazon!! ... show more

  • We switch these out filters once per month and rinse them once a week and consider them well worth the cost!
Size: Pack of 4 Style: Carbon Filters
I used to find that our dogs drinking water would get an icky slimy feeling after only a day or so. It bothered me a lot, so I finally purchased the pagoda water fountain (on sale with an additional coupon from Petco - worth the wait) and haven't regretted it! We have an RO system, as we live in a hard water area. I use these charcoal filters and switch them out once a month, at the same time as the foam filters. After a month the charcoal filter and foam filter has a very slight "fish-tanky" smell if I put it right up to my nose, so honestly it might be better to do the switch every three weeks perhaps, but the water is never slippery feeling. Our dog used to refuse to drink from her water dish when it wasn't perfectly clean (after a day or so), and she hasn't ever stopped drinking from the pagoda fountain with my current cleaning schedule (she used to bark once when we were running water at the sink, to let us know she needed water, so she knows how to tell me when her water isn't fresh lol) I have found that the foam filters do catch any hair, dust, the occasional gnat etc before the water goes through the motor so I am sure that the foam filters will increase the life span of the motor (I will post this review there too) I believe that these charcoal filters keep the water fresh for much longer. I used the fountain a couple of times without these filters, the first time I ran out, and the water seemed to get slimy again immediately. I top up the water daily and pull it all apart and clean everything once per week religiously. When I clean everything I run water through the charcoal filter and shake it out a few times. I also clean the foam filter really well before re-assembling it all. I don't put it in the dishwasher, just wash out everything with very hot water (except the motor which I rinse out with cold) Very pleased with this whole set up, and it is well worth the few minutes it takes once a week to clean it, and our dog does drink more water than before. And I feel much, much happier now that it never feels slimy, plus I like the indoor water fountain calming trickle. One comment on the sound though, it does get a lot louder if the water level is low, particularly as we have it on a tiled floor in an open plan kitchen/TV area. The changing sound level helps remind me to top it up so that's probably a good thing! If the water level is no more than 1/2-1" below the edge then the water sound is very zen! ... show more

  • Cleaning the Fountain
Size: Pack of 4 Style: Carbon Filters
I consider myself an expert on the PetSafe fountain, (at least the Avalon). I have had mine for 18 months and have the cleaning breakdown, reassembly process down and could probably do a hell of a Youtube video but I'm don't have time. I now only buy the original Drinkwell filters. I found a cheaper Chinese knock-off that was a 12 pack and thought I would save some money, I was wrong. Don't buy the Chinese imitation. They clog up in 2-3 days to the point it stops flowing completely. It made me think; what the hell is in them to make them totally jam up? Depending on your water source, (city tap water or bottled) it will make a difference. When I find an abandoned bottle of water in the house I pour it in the bowl, other than that I use tap. Every 5 days I do a complete breakdown on the fountain and it takes 5 minutes. Fill a sink with dish washing detergent and get a toothbrush and a abrasive sponge. Take apart the pump assembly with a pairing knife where it comes apart by the inlet screen. Pop off the plastic rotor cover with a knife and pluck out the magnetic rotor/shaft. Clean it out, algae from bacteria from saliva accumulates in the motor and clogs it up. Flush everything under the faucet, you don't want any soap left or you'll get your pet sick or have diarrhea. The sponge pre-filter needs attention also. This fills up with hair and globules of algae. Wash it out and replace it every 2 weeks or every 3 filter cycles, let stay in for a month without a cleaning and it can turn into a bacteria farm. You will also notice on the sides of the porcelain fountain upright become gritty due to calcium build up. Use a scouring pad or sponge with Comet or similar to make it smooth again. Put it all back together and don't try to fill it in the sink and walk it over (I learned the hard way dumping water all over the floor). Set it up dry but don't plug it in yet. Blow on the A/C connector end from the motor to get the water out and go back to the sink with a large pitcher and fill it up. Pour it up to 1/2 inch to the brim of the bowl, then plug it in. Always keep the bowl 1/2 inch from the brim. If you ever plug it back in, and it doesn't pump, you need to take the motor assembly apart and clean down in the rotor tube. I've had chunks of algae get stuck in there. That's all I got, the product does save me time though versus cleaning a bowl out every day, but the benefit to your pet is an attractive watering hole that encourages drinking more. JT ... show more
