  • Flow switch was leaking.
The pentair IC40 was new in the box so the fault is not from the seller. After installing the IC40 the flow switch was leaking where it screws into the body of the IC40. To stop the leak, I had to unscrew the flow switch and wrap the threads with plumbers' tape. The wire to the switch was so short (see photo) I could just unscrew it enough to get the tape in and stop the leak. Pentair needs to have a longer wire to the flow switch as they did on my original IC40 that was installed 5 years ago. ... show more

  • Cells don't last long enough
This is my third IC-40 in the 13 years since the pool was built. It's oversized (pool is only 14,000 gal) so they run fewer hours per day than an IC-20 would. I'd expect them to last longer than 6 years. Also the cost increased by 75% +/- since the previous replacement in 2016. I'd also note that I've had flow switches fail so find a good source for replacement when you buy the cell. ... show more

  • Replacing Pentair IntelliChlor IC40
Our pool is 2 years old and during the winter the power unit came off the wall and damaged the plug from the IntelliChlor IC40. The people who built the pool and installed all the hardware said that Pentair did not make a replacement plug and that I'd have to replace the IntelliChlor unit in total and quoted a price above $800 for a new unit. I lowered my rating of the IntelliChlor to 4 stars because there is no way to replace just the plug. I bought a new IntelliChlor for a little under $500 at Amazon. I read the reviews on Amazon and they were very helpful. As suggested I took pictures of the orientation of the old unit to ensure I had the flow arrow pointing in the correct position and took note of the location of the debris adapter and the O rings. I was able to unscrew the water line connector on both ends by hand (the installer had followed directions and the fittings were hand tight) It took 30 minutes to read the manual (most important part is about the Leds and what they mean). I switched out the old unit and installed the new unit in less than 10 minutes. As the manual says, turn off the pumps and ensure the IntelliChlor has the power off (I turned off the unit at the circuit box). The new unit easily slid into place and I screw the connectors at both ends (used the old connectors -- they showed no wear) After connecting the unit to the power unit I switched on the pumps and the power unit for the IntelliChlor. I verified that there were no leaks at the IntelliChlor unit. But the Leds didn't come on. I'd read on Amazon that the power unit that the IntelliChlor plugs into has a fuse. Read the power unit manual by Pentair -- it was not very helpful. It trouble shooting section it mention that the fuse was a slow blow 10 amp fuse but didn't tell how to change it. Amazon Answer to Customer questions came to the rescue. There was an answer that said that the fuse was a thumb type (wasn't sure what this meant at time) and that the fuse would come out of the bottom of the unit. There were several comments about customers who had to replace the fuse and had to purchase a new fuse holder after attempting the change the fuse. I used a small screwdriver to remove the fuse (put the blade in the slot of the fuse holder, push up and rotate and the fuse will come out. The fuse holder holds the fuse tight (very bad design by Pentair). The fuse twisted off as I took it out. Fortunately the top half of the fuse came out and didn't stick inside the holder. The bottom part of the fuse (the part that the screwdriver slot in it) had the bottom part of the fuse stuck in it. Based on the Amazon reviews I knew that fuse end would come out but that you had to be careful to separate if from the holder. I finally got it out with a small metal pick. Put in the new fuse and turned on the power and the IntelliChlor was working (Led lights were on). The salt light were blinking, but I recalled that I'd read something about this state in the IntellChlor manual -- back to the manual to discover what the blinking was telling me. When the IntelliChlor unit is initially turned on the light blink for two minutes. Bottom line, all well and good. Next step is to have the pool water tested to determine how much salt to add (last year after opening the pool it took about 500lbs for our 25,000 gallon pool. ... show more

  • Intellichlor IC40 and Intellisense pH install
I installed the IntellipH in combination with the Intellichlor IC40 Salt Cell and Intellichlor Power Center for the Salt Cell. I was replacing a Jandy Aquapure 1400 salt cell. My system shares the pump between the spa and pool and uses Jandy 2444 electronic valves to switch between them that are controlled by a Jandy Aqualink RS control panel. The Aqualink panel also used to turn off the salt cell when in spa mode to not over chlorinate the spa while in spa mode (i.e. while your in it). With the integration of the Pentair components one loses this direct communication to turn off the salt cell. To correct this, I installed the Pentair salt cell after the Jandy valve on the pool return side of the plumbing (Jandy salt cell was installed before the valve). The Pentair IC40 salt cell has an integrated flow switch, therefore in this configuration it will only turn on when in pool mode. In spa mode, there is no flow thru the cell. I was also concerned that the Intellisense pH would dose when in spa mode. Fortunately the Intellisense pH connects to the Intellichlor IC40 salt cell. It actually becomes the controller of the IC40 where you can see the cell status such as salt ppm level, water temp, and control cell output percentage. Any items that would cause the IC40 salt cell not to turn on (such as no flow, low water temp, etc) will also prevent the Intellisense pH from dosing acid. So in this configuration, the system will not dose when in spa mode because their is no flow present to the IC40. The Intellisense display panel is straight forward and instructions are good on how to calculate the percentage acid dispense setting based on pump run time and amount of acid you want to dispense. I calculated my total weekly acid that I manually add and used this to come up with a percentage setting based on pump run time. I have not run long enough to see if I need to adjust but the manual indicated that it could take several weeks to adjust exactly. The manual falls down on the actual instruction related to the hose connections for the Intellisense pH between its tank, pump, and your piping. They are as follows: 1. Suction line on tank connects to inlet of pump indicated by an upward arrow on pump housing. 2. Outlet of pump (indicated by downward arrow) connects to injection fitting that you installed on your pool piping (using supplied plastic clamshell and hose clamps, make sure to use Teflon tape on injection fitting to prevent leaks) 3. Vent on tank connects to short hose supplied on kit and just vents to the ambient and provides make up air. The tank is well sealed so without it the tank would be under a vacuum after the pump runs enough to remove all the air. The Intellisense pH tank needs to be secured to something weighted and that can accept screws. The manual recommends your pool equipment pad. Mine were all occupied so I used a large patio paver (roughly 16" x 24") from Lowe's that I drilled and inserted concrete plastic anchors. I installed the control panel and power center to my block wall. For this installation it was very helpful to have a hammer drill and 1/4" concrete bit as well as for the install of the tank to the patio paver. Other tools and materials used were 1. Silicon grease for gaskets, 2. Teflon tape for fittings, 3. 1/2" drill bit for drilling acid injection hole into existing pool piping, 4. Screwdriver, and 5. Tywraps to neaten up wiring. I hope that with proper maintenance I will get many years out of both the IC40 salt cell and Intellisense pH. ... show more
