Description

Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue helped revolutionize the grass seed industry. This durable, heat-tolerant variety was an early leader in putting low-maintenance, disease-resistant lawns within the average homeowner’s reach. Decades later, this economical, traditional tall fescue grass remains an industry standard for cool-season lawn grasses. This tough, drought-resistant grass thrives in lawns that receive 4 to 8 hours of sun. Plant it in the early spring or early fall and start to see results within 8 to 21 days. This 5-pound bag covers up to 1,000 square feet for overseeding an existing lawn and 415 square feet for starting a new lawn from scratch. While most grass seed companies buy their seed on the open market, we are the only major grass seed company that works directly with a network of dedicated growers. Built on decades of trust and integrity, our relationships with seed growers and their families now span multiple generations. Our legacy of working directly with farmers to bring you the finest grass seed possible helps ensure their success and ours. At Pennington, we know our seed and the farmers who grow it. From field to final product, that's the Pennington way.

  • I will buy it again 😃
Size: 7 LB
Use two 7-pound bags But the first bag didn't sprout because the 1.Santa Ana winds got very, very strong, 2.The birds 3.I didn't put soil in it. So if you want it to grow, make sure you put soil in it, water it very well, and watch out for birds....

  • Shocked Me
Size: 7 LB
I had Harry Crab Grass growing in my yard and had let it get too large after landscapers just kept saying mowing more often would help. Side Note: It doesn't. Anyway, as I'm pulling up these clumps, I knew I needed to replace with something or I was going to have giant open spots. Worse, I was weeding in the fall... that wasn't my motivator for choosing this grass. I'm in North Carolina, so I have that clay soil mix and is prone to weeds. NC stays milder, staying in the 60s and 70s sometimes into December with bouts of 50s. After pulling the weeds, I just grabbed a handful and spread it into the soil, honestly not expecting it to grow. After some rain, I was shocked to find it did grow... in November. It is that beautiful grass that everyone wants as their front lawn. Incredibly green, soft, and perfect shoots, it blew my expectations out of the water. I've started yanking out my Bermuda grass (which I swear is the white kid dreadlocks of grass; ugly, vine-like, abrasive and best left for cattle and horses). Some of it hasn't grown, but I'm going to give it through spring and probably add more. Water is key and it did best when the soil was tilled up, green in the soil that now was loose and empty from weed pulling. I just took my hand and lightly worked it through until it was barely visible. It did not do as well where it ended up more on top of the soil than in it. I can't wait for spring. I'm going to go nuts on my backyard with this stuff! ... show more

  • Questionable certification but clarified as a typo by customer service, it’s growing
Size: 40 LB
UPDATE 9/20: It grows. It’s a bit finicky to conditions but once you figure it out, it does well. All of my experience was out of the same bag so it’s all the same seed. Seed that was worked by hand into the soil layer in very small bare spots of a few inches in diameter that were largely shaded by the surrounding grass were growing in under a week and 4 inches tall in 2 weeks. In contrast, seed that was worked into the soil in larger areas (say 6” diameter) just sat there and did nothing with the same watering schedule. After adding additional top soil to those areas and blending the seeds into it, the seed did start to grow a few weeks later and once it gets going, it grows pretty quickly. If you are having problems getting it going, it does not respond well to just spreading on bare soil or even lightly raking it in. You need a lot of soil contact preferably complete coverage and high level of shade / darkness either with a serious top dressing or straw cover. And yes, you need to keep it moist. When it comes up, it’s very fine bladed so you are not going to want much if any traffic on it in large ares until it stars to mature. In the smaller spots, it was fine mowing over it from day one. In the medium sized areas in the sun, it appears to be more vigorous and less water sensitive than the surrounding grass but until it matures that may not be a fair comparison. The local drought and very abnormal 90 degree temps this time of the year is not making this any easier but with adequate prep and water, it’s germinating as well as any other seed I have used. UPDATE 8/19: Customer service was fast to respond ! They confirmed the test date was a typo. Based on the lot number, the test date should have been April-2025 not 2026. So, I have started using the seed. Will check back in a month or so about how well it’s going. Moving from the initial 2 stars to 4 stars for now. Original Review: Just got this to start some patch work now then a complete over-seeding in a few weeks. The test date shows April 2026. Yes, that’s 8 month in the future. The expiration date is Jan 2026, 3 months BEFORE the test date. The germination test rate shows only 80%, that’s not very good. Has someone just taken old stock and dummied up a new label ? Maybe just a simple mistake … maybe a bag of junk. This wasn’t cheap. Be careful on this stuff. ... show more

  • very good and quick results
Size: 3 LB
I have this thing about picking weeds and sometimes next thing I know there are spots all over my lawn 😭 it’s slightly embarrassing and definitely not cute.. so I bought this and another that was full sun bc this isn’t. The other didnt grow as much as quickly as this did.. so I bought a few more bags of each. the new grass is very soft and very pretty .. much nicer than our native florida grass and even the fancy lawns in the neighborhood. At this point i’m just overseeding our existing lawn and honestly this is a nice addition and it matches well. I didn’t use a spreader and I didn’t really turn the soil much.. I literally just threw this in my yard somewhat strategically. not 100% sure what I’m going to do on full sun days in the summer, but that’s why I am using both. and hopefully the grass will all grow together and it won’t be an issue🤷🏻♀️ i’m just happy how quickly I saw results. the seeds are coated in a green color and they literally go from green seeds on dirt to green seedlings on the dirt in just a few days. I watered the yard 3x a day and I think that helped the most ... show more
