I had Harry Crab Grass growing in my yard and had let it get too large after landscapers just kept saying mowing more often would help. Side Note: It doesn't. Anyway, as I'm pulling up these clumps, I knew I needed to replace with something or I was going to have giant open spots. Worse, I was weeding in the fall... that wasn't my motivator for choosing this grass. I'm in North Carolina, so I have that clay soil mix and is prone to weeds. NC stays milder, staying in the 60s and 70s sometimes into December with bouts of 50s. After pulling the weeds, I just grabbed a handful and spread it into the soil, honestly not expecting it to grow. After some rain, I was shocked to find it did grow... in November. It is that beautiful grass that everyone wants as their front lawn. Incredibly green, soft, and perfect shoots, it blew my expectations out of the water. I've started yanking out my Bermuda grass (which I swear is the white kid dreadlocks of grass; ugly, vine-like, abrasive and best left for cattle and horses). Some of it hasn't grown, but I'm going to give it through spring and probably add more. Water is key and it did best when the soil was tilled up, green in the soil that now was loose and empty from weed pulling. I just took my hand and lightly worked it through until it was barely visible. It did not do as well where it ended up more on top of the soil than in it. I can't wait for spring. Takes a bit to sprout but once it does it grows pretty fast if you keep it watered. Only started a test patch where there hasn't been grass in years (back - Northern - edge of the house, under the shade of a large maple tree). Feel confident enough in it to tune-up the rototiller!     • Tricky to grow but eventually works. Support could have been better.

I like the product but this support could have been better. Luckily I tried to grow my lawn in patches to see what worked and what didn't work. I always used clear plastic over the area that I seeded to create a greenhouse effect. The first patches took eight weeks to even germinate, and only grew in small blotches here and there. I decided the mistake I made was in lightly fertilizing the dirt. Germination seems to work better with zero fertilizer. The second patches germinated in about three weeks and were still a bit blotchy. I saw that the areas where I weighted the plastic down with a paint bucket germinated faster, probably because it had more seed to soil contact. It got to where I laid sheets of plywood on top of the plastic for a week to make the seeds under it germinate quickly. From then on whenever I had a bare patch I seeded it and put a bucket on top of it for about a week. The last patches I put down germinated in just days and I had two inch long grass within a week. I think there were three reasons for this. I used a spring rake to lightly mix the seed with the soil after sprinkling the seed on top of the soil. This lightly buried about half the seed. Also I left the bag of seed opened in the fog for four months at this point. I think the moisture in the air woke up the bag of seed. At this point I could even sprinkle the seed in the bare areas of the first patches that I planted, put a bucket on top of it, and it produced 2 inch grass within about a week. the grass that germinated under a bucket was usually white or light yellow and very curvy. After removing the bucket and letting those patches have sun for a week, that grass turned green and straight. for the second and third patches I always threw as many buckets and pieces of plywood as I could find on top of the clear plastic. That always made those areas germinate very quickly. I had asked the supplier why the first patches were not germinating after six weeks and they simply said continue to water it and it should work out. A little advice about not using fertilizer and lightly brushing the seed into the dirt would have helped. I don't think they would've known the bucket/plywood trick, but a little better guidance would've been appreciated. This is why I give this product only four stars. ... show more

I needed grass seed to fill in bare spots in the lawn mostly up against a border. I raked the soil with a hand cultivator, spread the seed and lightly covered with potting soil. I watered every day with temps in the 80's and in 5 days the grass had sprouted to half an inch. The pictures are showing the grass at 7 days. Very good seed in my opinion. ... show more

Update 13 April 2026 for my two prior order for this, shipped and sold by Amazon: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So, down from 3-stars to 1-star. Well, it's not me. I've been doing this for decades and never have I seen so much seed, dead on the ground - yes, doing it all correctly. I've done, from landscaping to plant and maintain pastures. And, I used other types of seed - however, may not make it through a "hot" summer, like perennial rye - can't fault it for that - to qualify, all others I experiments with so show "grass" work - but not the exact variety that belongs in this region. So, what's my point? There's something wrong with this product imo. And, I've never had issues with the non-treated seed which I prefer anyway but, could only find a "bulk deal" with this. I is not a "deal" if ~90% dies. Even the birds won't touch it even after all the blue washes off. So, I guess I'll have to go to the much high brand name that only sell very small bags of seed or possibly switch to another variety I have not tried yet but, my region is not "hot enough" for - but, with full sun summers if you take a Lazer Thermometer Reading of the Ground after 8+ hours is like the more southern regions anyway. It'll take more water than I am happy to pour out, but what is the alternative. I wish the Buyers here - engaged this problem more proactively. I'd like may past two orders fairly dealt this since can't know withing 30 days (germination time) what's going on. Moreover, there's is Fall/Winter drops I do as well, etc. So, I hope that helps the typical homeowner and that with the reasoning above can't recommend this until somehow changes. Buy a third bag? - based on what evidence it will germinate and live? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's typical Fescue. In my experience is still a bit over priced. And, as far as germination and etc. it's always a roll of the dice. I've been shifting to the perennial rye - which is really over priced, but at the cost of constantly re-seeding of this, my hope is it may be the same but have the grass hold up. I maintain my yard, I feel, fairly well, water, fertilize, watch Ph level, watch for the typical white grubs and mole crickets and etc. and don't blame the seed, when is a grub issue, etc. I do kind of blame the labeling and instructions since one will do far better to get to a e.g. university .edu agricultural sight for what and when and why. I tend to buy my seed in the fall anyway or prior to spring "off season" ? so to speak - I'm not seeding in July/August - wow, no, not doing that. So, again, this is not bargain but what are ones value choices and why by a 5lb bag at the same price if have more than a 20x20 patch of "grass". I hope that helps someone - and I feel it's important to comment all that since it's not a matter of chucking seed down middle of July and hoping for a lawn - it does not work that way. This blend comes up fast but now I’m sorry I planted it. Whatever variety is in this, it is very coarse and grows 2x as fast as the rest of the lawn. It’s one away from looking like crabgrass

You can see the bright green grass all the way down the side of the driveway and the circle of bright green in the middle. All of that was rock hard, bare clay15 days ago. The grass came in beautifully. I did go fairly heavy with the seed and hand spread it. A full bag was used on the right half of the grass and on the other side of the driveway. My routine was watering it once in the afternoon around 3 and once later at night when it was cooler. That was with the intent of not allowing the water to evaporate immediately. I watered each zone for about 15 minutes. Day 5, much if the seed had started to grow and was approx. 1-2" tall. Day 15 (today) and it was taller than the surrounding grass so I mowed it for the first time. Make sure you use sharp blades. The only 'prep' was a kind neighbor aerating the lawn about a week after putting the seed down. Otherwise, my only trick was keeping the soil wet daily. ... show more
