Description

Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue helped revolutionize the grass seed industry. This durable, heat-tolerant variety was an early leader in putting low-maintenance, disease-resistant lawns within the average homeowner’s reach. Decades later, this economical, traditional tall fescue grass remains an industry standard for cool-season lawn grasses. This tough, drought-resistant grass thrives in lawns that receive 4 to 8 hours of sun. Plant it in the early spring or early fall and start to see results within 8 to 21 days. This 5-pound bag covers up to 1,000 square feet for overseeding an existing lawn and 415 square feet for starting a new lawn from scratch. While most grass seed companies buy their seed on the open market, we are the only major grass seed company that works directly with a network of dedicated growers. Built on decades of trust and integrity, our relationships with seed growers and their families now span multiple generations. Our legacy of working directly with farmers to bring you the finest grass seed possible helps ensure their success and ours. At Pennington, we know our seed and the farmers who grow it. From field to final product, that's the Pennington way.

  • I love it
Size: 7 LB
I pretty much have about 20 years of pine and leaf build up I have filtered lights all day. The big thing that helped me was 2 weeks of /moderate heavy rain. I cut most leaf and pine to about 1.25-2 inches on a push mower in some area I took my riding mower and bared out areas. At first I was hesitant with the seed and used it sparingly once I saw my test areas germinate well. I pretty much walked paths and put seed down and hoped for the best. Some areas I just missed because I didn’t know how the 10+ hours of filtered sun would handle in basically a Forrest. I was told it was somewhat impossible but this is about a shot in the dark try and it worked amazing . Some issues I have are just basic issues like flooding and washing out but that’s because of the terrain in different areas . Again this is a mostly pined area. I have cut all the pine needles down to 1.25 on the next section and got some heavy rain so that area is my next. I think overall the shredded leaf pine helped and created somewhat of a topsoil and the rain made the shifts in soil to get good ground contact. I have bought way more seed and intent to make my whole property ky31. I love the color as well it’s just cheap and fast. I am in germination heaven with storms and humidity so take that into consideration. Timing is key. The other thing is the work and research. I had better luck with the shredded pine than the bare areas maybe the organic material is helping it grow better I know there’s a lot of hate but germination window is key and id keep the seeds wet instead of moist. Then keep it moist as you see shoots ... show more

  • Smart grass, drought resistant, handles traffic
Size: 20 lb
water smart grass. Slightly thicker grass but grows well and is fantastic for low water areas and droughts. It’s also great for high traffic areas

  • Questionable certification but clarified as a typo by customer service, it’s growing
Size: 40 LB
UPDATE 9/20: It grows. It’s a bit finicky to conditions but once you figure it out, it does well. All of my experience was out of the same bag so it’s all the same seed. Seed that was worked by hand into the soil layer in very small bare spots of a few inches in diameter that were largely shaded by the surrounding grass were growing in under a week and 4 inches tall in 2 weeks. In contrast, seed that was worked into the soil in larger areas (say 6” diameter) just sat there and did nothing with the same watering schedule. After adding additional top soil to those areas and blending the seeds into it, the seed did start to grow a few weeks later and once it gets going, it grows pretty quickly. If you are having problems getting it going, it does not respond well to just spreading on bare soil or even lightly raking it in. You need a lot of soil contact preferably complete coverage and some level of shade either with a serious top dressing or straw cover. And yes, you need to keep it moist. When it comes up, it’s very fine bladed so you are not going to want much if any traffic on it in large ares until it stars to mature. In the smaller spots, it was fine mowing over it from day one. In the medium sized areas in the sun, it appears to be more vigorous and less water sensitive than the surrounding grass but until it matures that may not be a fair comparison. The local drought and very abnormal 90 degree temps this time of the year is not making this any easier but with adequate prep and water, it’s germinating as well as any other seed I have used. UPDATE 8/19: Customer service was fast to respond ! They confirmed the test date was a typo. Based on the lot number, the test date should have been April-2025 not 2026. So, I have started using the seed. Will check back in a month or so about how well it’s going. Moving from the initial 2 stars to 4 stars for now. Original Review: Just got this to start some patch work now then a complete over-seeding in a few weeks. The test date shows April 2026. Yes, that’s 8 month in the future. The expiration date is Jan 2026, 3 months BEFORE the test date. The germination test rate shows only 80%, that’s not very good. Has someone just taken old stock and dummied up a new label ? Maybe just a simple mistake … maybe a bag of junk. This wasn’t cheap. Be careful on this stuff. ... show more

  • Disappointing Results
Size: 20 lb
I was greatly disappointed with my purchase of the Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue Grass Seed 20 lb. Despite my careful adherence to the instructions, including diligent soil preparation and correct seeding techniques, only a small portion of the grass seed actually germinated after several weeks. Additionally, the grass that did manage to grow was patchy and sparse, with numerous bare spots, and possessed an unsightly coarseness that gave my lawn an unkempt and wild appearance. To add to the lackluster performance, the color of the grass was dull and unappealing, rendering my once-lush green space an eyesore. As if that weren't enough, the grass was remarkably fragile and failed to withstand even moderate foot traffic. Within a few weeks, the grass began to thin out further, eventually dying off completely in some areas. In short, I cannot recommend the Pennington Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue Grass Seed 20 lb to anyone seeking to create a healthy and visually appealing lawn. This product proved to be a complete waste of both time and money, failing to deliver on any of its promises. When choosing the best tall fescue grass seed, it's important to consider several parameters to ensure the best results for your lawn. Some important parameters to consider are: 1. Germination rate: This refers to the percentage of seeds that will actually grow into healthy grass plants. Look for seeds with a high germination rate to ensure that you get the most out of your investment. 2. Drought resistance: Tall fescue is known for its ability to withstand drought conditions, but some varieties are more resistant than others. Look for seeds that are labeled as drought-tolerant to ensure that your lawn stays green and healthy during dry spells. 3. Disease resistance: Some tall fescue varieties are more resistant to common lawn diseases, such as brown patch and dollar spot. Choosing a variety with good disease resistance can help ensure that your lawn stays healthy and green. 4. Traffic tolerance: If you have kids or pets, or if your lawn gets a lot of foot traffic, you'll want to choose a tall fescue variety that can withstand heavy use. Look for seeds that are labeled as "traffic-tolerant" or "wear-resistant." 5. Shade tolerance: Tall fescue can grow in full sun or partial shade, but some varieties are more shade-tolerant than others. If you have a lot of trees or other shade-producing elements in your yard, look for seeds that are labeled as shade-tolerant to ensure that your lawn stays healthy in lower light conditions. 6. Soil type: Consider the type of soil in your yard when choosing tall fescue seeds. Some varieties are better suited to clay soils, while others do well in sandy or loamy soils. 7. Maintenance requirements: Some tall fescue varieties require more maintenance than others, such as frequent mowing and fertilization. Consider your time and budget constraints when choosing a variety. 8. Overall, the best tall fescue grass seed for your lawn will depend on your specific needs and growing conditions. Be sure to read seed labels carefully and do your research to choose the best variety for your lawn. ... show more
