  • Have a Problem Priming: Read my last update.. it explains why this can happen
I just set it up yesterday and so far it’s exceptionally quiet, my GloFish Tetras are very active and Happy, the water is very clear and it hasn’t leaked a drop. What more could one ask for? I’ve read several of the critical reviews and tho I’m sure they were valid , I think some have had air leaks causing priming and noise issues. I feel bad for those with fish dying but suspect that unless you’re very careful about the temperature, chemistry and bacteria levels that may need to be addressed with supplements (especially bacteria add in) as you add an new filter and new water, especially in a smaller tank that the stress can easily kill fish. I made sure to use treated water and added Prime and a little bacteria supplement to help it get started properly, and that’s likely helped the fish a lot. I was a little disappointed that only the two large end latches of the 4 actually help compress the o-ring seal, the two on the sides don’t seem to help do anything except release the seal when opening it later for cleaning. The handle seems sturdy as is all the other material. The 4 tube end fitting's assembly was very easy, leak proof, and effective, the U-shaped over the back fittings weren’t a problem .. certainly it fit much better in my custom wooden tank enclosure than expected so overall I’m really happy so far.. after watching A few YT videos outlining the importance of both aerobic and anerobic bacteria in the nitrogen cycle I don’t plan to change the filters for very long time intervals except perhaps swap out the carbon bags. Mine came with three carbon bags, ( I put in only 2 of the 3) about 7 white fine mesh ones I used 3 of these in the canister) and one coarse black extra one for the bottom as the 1st filter .. as well as the hard anaerobic bacteria cylinder tubes (which I placed on top) .. so there was a lot of spare excess filters with it. I only have a 20 gal tank and wanted this canister primarily to keep the ammonia level, nitrite and nitrate levels in check so I can stock a lot more fish than a normal 20 gal tank can support. Currently I only have 4 but would like to triple the number of GloFish in this tank, and I think once the filter biology is established I’ll be able to do that and keep the chemistry in check .. We'll see. That probably also depends on if I can keep the 4 grandkids from accidentally dumping in too much food in too? By the way I did have to cut back the water flow using the intake valve about 50% cause it was just way to much for a 20 gallon tank, I hope this doesn’t void the warantee but the fish were a bit stresses by all the bubbles and swimming against new water currents until I did this. The photos are Fe fore and after adding the 1000 Elite canister An update 3/26/2018 I've had it almost 3 months .. no problems at all yet.. But I have yet to change and clean the filter media.. I will be doing that soon.. The main thing I like is it's given me the confidence that I can control the water parameters well enough to upgrade to a Planted tank with a lot more fish.. Ive really enjoyed this 20Gal tank a lot and in large measure it's due to this filter.. Ok I just changed the medial and cleaned it for the first time and had fits trying to get the flow to sustain.. priming it was easy but after several trips to re-examine the seals and impeller and everything looks Ok the motor is running with no noise but there is not enough flow when standing up straight to keep the water moving.. on the other hand if I tilt it over like this Photo shows about 40 degrees, it works Ok but I can''t leave it this way..its not leaking water or sucking in air as far as I can tell .. why would it work but only on one side like this PLEASE HELP.. Update an hour later: after removing all the trays again and some of the old biofloss ( which I was hoping to retain for it's bacteria) i put it all back together and made extra sure all the coupling tubes between the trays were seated properly as they stacked and that the o-ring seal was on the power head tube properly and now this time it started up without priming needed at all, and had twice the flow in the upright and normal standing position Yeah! So, I think it was probably my fault for not seating the trays properly. Update : 4/11/2018 added this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008SOH602/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 to the outflow tube and it solved the high pressure jet stream issue that was tearing up my Amazon Sword plant leaves perfectly as well as cut down the humidity problem due to all the bubbles. Now it still have good water flow but no more high pressure jet blast.. :). no issues with reliability or noise either and it does a great job of keeping the chemical levels balanced too.. update 4/28/ 2018.. aargh , it’s doing it again! I can’t get water flow unless I tilt it. This started after a simple 30% water change. Rechecked all gaskets impeller and tray seating and cant fixit .. I’m getting another canister :) Update : 5/11/2018 Last night my outflow stopped again but this time I was prepared with a backup 1000 non-Elite) and swapped it in only to find the problem for teh past several months has never been in the canister.. it was a very small crack in the intake hose fitting at the top end coupling to the U shaped hard plastic tube.. Right there where you see I tried to fixit by taping is where a crack can occur that will suck AIR in instead of water form the fish tank and the result is you can't Prime it, and cant fill the canister since there is no siphon action possible till that air leak is sealed.. If you contact Penn Plax Customer Service within the 1st three years they will replace the bad part.. It turns out this is why my canister would only work while it was tilted because a little bit of flex in the hose caused the crack to close enough to get the water flowing again each time .. see photo of where I temp fixed it with white vinyl tape. ... show more

  • Great deal!!
When my HOB filter died unexpectantly, I decided it was finally time to spend a little extra and buy a canister filter instead of spending another $60+ on another HOB. I have a 55 gal freshwater tank and the HOB was never really working for me, I felt that the filter would just keep pushing out the dirty water and not be filtered. I found the Penn Plax Cascade filter by chance while looking up the best canisters on Google and after looking at the reviews I decided to go for it. I ordered the 1000 elite version and so far it is well worth the $100+ I paid for it. -The shipping was quick and easy, coming in only a few days. Which was a huge plus because my tank was currently without a filter. -The set-up was was easy as well. The filter comes with a detailed instruction book and even someone such as myself, who is not at all tech savvy, was able to figure it out. I was worried that parts would be missing or I would have to engineer something to get this to work, but everything is included and after a couple steps, the filter is all ready to go. -The design of the filter is nice and "sleek". It's not a huge bulky contraption, but a small box that can easily fit under any tank stand. The tubing is a little long and the instructions suggest cutting them to fit your situation. -As far as the performance of the filter, I have noticed a big difference in my water quality. I've had this filter for about a month and my water is clearer and my levels are almost perfect. With my powerhead going, I have yet to see any waste or plant life sit in my aquarium like I did with my old HOB. The overall opinion for the 1000 Elite version, is that this is an incredible deal. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a canister filter! ... show more

  • If only it was self priming
This kit came with lots of extra filter material (total of 3 sets of foam/fiber filter material, 3 bags of activated carbon) and all the hosing, etc. It also comes with ceramic media. I am certain that the filter material (not including the carbon) will outlast the pump, since I rarely would change that out. My biggest complaint is that, for the price, it would be really nice to have a self priming pump. Hand priming a cannister filter pump ( especially for the first use) can be a real pain and takes forever. Also, mine had a piece of plastic broken off the bottom. It was decorative piece and it does not affect the function (I didn't notice it until after I had hooked everything up, so I did not try to return it). Otherwise, after about 4 weeks, seems to be working fine for my 75 gallon aquarium with robust circulation. ... show more
