  • Wow!
Capacity: 1TB Style: SSD
What a great external drive. Small and fast. It was advertised as "up to" 950 MB/s, and I did not expect that I would see that level of performance. I got over 900 MB/s on both write and read. Oyen stated that they typically use an Intel 660 SSD in the 1TB Helix devices. Note that you can't buy that SSD with enclosure and cables for this price. I would consider this drive to be a real bargain. Don't hesitate to buy it. Although in a sturdy enclosure, this drive seems to he a bit "clunky" when set down on a surface. I would recommend buying the drive in the bumper or getting a bumper from Oyen for another $12. One other thing ... I did not think that this drive runs hot, as some of the reviewers say. It is warm to the touch, but the enclosure fins seem to keep it comfortably cool. ... show more

  • Small, fast, high quality.
Normally, I would pass on an item that had no reviews nor a rating (which this one didn’t when I purchased it), but since this little SSD was so new I decided to look into the company and some of their other products to gauge the potential risk factor. Obviously, I decided to take said risk and, thus far, I'm really glad I did. This little guy is small sleek and super fast.....like, crazy super fast. The enclosure is basically one big heat sink, which seems to be working because it doesn’t get very hot even after prolonged use. The center of it can feel warm to the touch, for sure, but nothing major. Currently, I can't speak to its longevity but I'll be back to update my review if it doesn’t hold up over time. Otherwise, no news is good news. The only downside is now my boyfriend wants one for Giftmas. ... show more

  • Truly amazing
These drives were recommended by the developers of Carbon Coby Cloner. They are truly extraordinary. Fast beyond belief and amazingly petite, my daily backup is achieved in 7 minutes rather than 30+ minutes using my fastest Thunderbolt Hard Drive and an hour with a USB hard drive. And the price is a steal. I paid more for an ordinary hard drive a few years ago. I bought 3 of them and completely discarded by old hard drive backups. People complain of heat. I have not found that to be an issue. When first populating the drive with 1 TB of data, the drive got no hotter than my backup hard drives do. Recommended without reservation. I was so impressed that I took the time to thank the staff of CCC for recommending it. ... show more

  • Fast, small and gets uncomfortably hot.
I’m using this on a 16” MacBook Pro and it’s fast. I’m getting close to 1GB/s reads and writes but it gets too hot when it’s busy with writes. This worries me that it won’t last very long. Only time will tell but I worry. Make sure you use the included usb-c to usb-c cable so it takes advantage of the USB 3.2 gen 2 speeds. I tried using the cable that came with my iPadpro and it’s very slow by comparison. Update: I purchased the drive on Dec. 2019. It's now April 2021 and it's still going strong. Zero problems so far. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Fast and durable
Capacity: 2TB Style: SSD Rugged
Used to backup my new 16" MacBook Pro (over 750 GB in less than 15 minutes) with included Thunderbolt cable. Incredibly fast. From reading some of the earlier reviews I was expecting the Dura to become very hot, but during and after the backup process it was warm but comfortable to hold in my hand. Very durable enclosure and smaller than expected. Very happy with this choice. ... show more

  • It gets hot and throttles itself
Capacity: 8TB Style: SSD
The 8 TB is great. The speed of access is impressive as long as you keep it cool and so far no loses although USB-C is known for popping loose at just the wrong time. I experienced the throttle effect when I was doing a bunch of data manipulation better this unit and another big fireware SSC. I was quite startled as the speeds just dropped like a rock from the 800 MB/sec down to USB speeds of 125 MB/Sec. After a bunch or reboots and testing, I figured out it was the unit overheating. So out comes the trusty Braun desk fan and it is now getting air blown on it. The heat problem went away quickly and back to full speed. I gave it 4 stars for that reason. I am now looking for a 16TB unit to use as a production work space because 8 TB is just not enough. ... show more

  • Fast and small
Capacity: 2TB Style: SSD Rugged
Love how small this drive is and how FAST it is. File transfers are instantaneous on my 2019 MacBook Pro with USB C. Biggest downside is really with exfat I think, which is out of Helix’s control. I may reformat to Mac OS journaled to get around some of the weird errors I get. With exfat, it’s hard to safely eject the hard drive without relaunching finder every time so it becomes a pain. ... show more

  • The best backup drive ever
Capacity: 1TB Style: SSD
Tried this brand based on a suggestion from my backup software (Carbon Copy Cloner). They weren't lying, these drives blow the others away especially when it comes to speed. Best decision I've made in a while and will eventually have to replace all my others with Helix SSDs.
