Takes FOREVER to boil water for pasta. Word of caution...use a silicone mat under it, it gets hot and could leave a burn mark. Otherwise it is okay, it's a hotplate, does what it is supposed to do.

This unit first off is cast iron which surprised me as I was mainly looking at the amps. It worked great for a short while though it hums. It would bring water to a nice rapid boil, but now has a hard time bringing a small pot of water for oatmeal to a boil, a very small pot. Which is unfortunate as I chose this brand on purpose as the last one I bought has lasted for years and was very happy with it. Sadly funny the old one works better than the new one. ... show more

It seems to work fine. However, it takes a long time to get hot, and the maximum heat is pretty low. The max heat is comparable to the lowest simmer heat on a regular stovetop. For most things it's annoying to use. I got it for regular/daily use, but have put it in a cupboard as it's simply insufficient. I can completely cook eggs on a regular stove burner faster than I can get this thing up to a temperature to even start cooking. I considered returning it, but for the cost, I decided to keep for use at hotels and camping. I'm definitely disappointed, though. ... show more
