I have included pictures of the outside of the package, me pouring a very small fraction out onto my hand, and that same small fraction of the seeds spread out for damp cold stratification (process described on package). I admit I thought the 1000 seeds was a typo and it was supposed to be 100, but upon receiving it I have no doubts that I received around 1000 seeds. I plan to germinate inside, grow in pots over the winter, and place the entire plant in the spring. I do not have good luck growing seeds outdoors. For a timeline of this plant, the seeds need to stratify for a month (or over the winter). They then take a month to germinate (the first sign of leaves). Flowering won't begin until the second year of growth. Finally, columbine plants are short-lived perennials, and only live 3-5 years. If you're looking to maintain a columbine garden, you'll want to start a few new plants each year to ensure there are always some blooming and new ones to replace those that are expiring. The size of this packet should be enough to guarantee years of planting if stored in a cool, dry place. UPDATE 8/14/23: germination was a success! I trialed a few plants and they just sprouted! It's a slow process getting them started, but it will definitely pay off if you like this type of flower.

The first order I placed for these was lost in the mail. I contacted the seller and it was immediately replaced. I've been trying to grow wild columbine from seed for YEARS with poor results, but these seeds were fresh and I think every single one I sowed (and there's a BUNCH of them in the packet!) germinated. The only problem might be that there are TOO many seeds in the packet, and it is easy to over-sow. :) If you are having problems germinating columbine seed, I have some tips. Order fresh seed from a great seller like this. Pop them in the fridge for one month to cold stratify them (just leave them in the packet). I put them in the fridge the first week of May and took them out the first week of June. After one month in the fridge, sow them in good quality seed medium in flats, mist well, cover with plastic and put them in a cool, semi-shaded location. Check them every few days to make sure they are moist, not wet. When you see the first leaves appear, remove the plastic and leave them in a shady location. When "true" leaves appear, start transplanting them to larger pots. Once you move them to individual pots, expect their size to double or TRIPLE within a few days. By fall, they should be ready for transplanting into your garden. I have had very little luck sowing columbine directly in the garden. The seed are tiny and it is very easy for them to dry out or to be damaged by hard rain or watering. Starting and establishing them in flats and pots first is best. I've attached photos showing the germination rate (I would say it is close to if not 100%) and how the seedlings look just 2 months after sowing.

Packaged and labeled well. This is NOT a 30-90 day to flower plant. If started today I will not see results for 14+ months. Looking forward to this new addition!!!! Other Columbine have done well here lower end zone 9.

I planted the Outside Pride Columbine seeds in front of our back deck last fall; this spring, the seeds have begun sending up healthy shoots (see the photo)! We planted others previously that greet the hummingbirds each spring - hummers love columbine for its sweet high-nectar count. Columbine is a branching tall plant that sends forth beautiful, throated red blooms that will return as a perennial year after year when grown in part sun to partial shade. The roots of the Columbine need sufficient time to form and become established, so patience and watering without overwatering is required. They will not get tall or bloom much in the first year. The frilly green leaf foliage is gorgeous and will reward your eyes as you wait for the buds and blooms. You will not regret your purchase! Each year, the Columbine plants will grow taller, branch out more, and send out more blooms as they get established. They bountifully release tiny seeds - they are self-sowing and will spread over time to yield a patch of plenty. I planted a large amount in a wide area to grow a large patch in a shorter timespan and to achieve amore dramatic and attractive display for the hummingbirds. Outside Pride provides good instructions for planting on all of their seed packets. I have been pleased to buy a variety of seeds from this company because of their selection and because I've always found their growth to be very reliable and rewarding. Plant according to instructions, then wait and watch in hope, then enjoy all of the lovely red flowers that are sure to bloom and the delight of observing the beautiful, graceful hummingbirds from your deck that will sip from the Columbine's nectar!

I blame Southern WI drought for the poor performance of my many colombines. In past years a fat juice caterpillar would eat all but the stems, halfway through my growing/blooming stages. In days of old, didn't have any problems growing small bushy plants of colombines. Easy to grow. This year was the drought, difficulty keeping them moist enough to keep them going and getting more seeds to take off. Will cont to repopulate my gardens/colombines.

We did get 3 plants out of these seeds when direct sown. Columbines take 2 years to flower. Would have liked more to bloom but happy we got any.

I am very pleased with these seeds. I planted them in small pots, so I can tend them and transplant them around the yard. Because I had so many seeds remaining I sowed them directly in the soil in a couple of places also. The seeds I sowed directly didn't fair as well as those I started in pots. I think a couple strong storms washed the seeds away for the most part.I highly recommend that you start them in small pots and transplant them. When you place the seeds in pots or sow them do not cover them with soil. I found that filling the pots with loose, high quality potting soil and then gently watering them was the best way to get good germination.
