  • Saved me many hours of frustration!
Let me start off by saying that with many purchases over 3-4 years since I created my amazon account this is the only review I have ever written. The reason is this tool performs very well! It is a universal tool so it may not fit your application perfectly, but on my 05 Mazda 6 2.3 it worked wonders! I have spent the past week trying every method I could think of! Hammer, pickle fork, gear puller, propane torch, penetrating oil, and even my BFH. Nothing and I mean nothing made this ball joint want to come loose! Once I got this tool I was skeptical because it seems heavy duty, but seemed poorly put together with how it had gaps between the top and bottom jaw. I lubed up the threads with anti seize and started cranking away. I cranked it down as hard as I could with my 1/2" ratchet in very limited space and gave the bottom jaw a tap right below the joint and it popped right out! To do the remaining 3 ball joints it took less than 5 min. Each popped out with little effort. This is a must have tool as I have spent many times in the past week kicking my feet and calling my car every name in the book! would highly recommend! ... show more

  • Bought this for working on PITA VW--it most definitely helped
I bought this specifically because I was going to work on a couple B5.5 era VW Passats. I've successfully separated ball joints from the knuckles in the past without this tool, but it was a lot more work, and more often than not on one of the arms, the press-fit sleeve for the tapered ball joint stud would come out with the ball joint stud rather than stay in the knuckle, which then requires more of your time to extract the sleeve from the old arm so you can hammer it back into the knuckle prior to installing the replacement control arm. This did exactly what I needed it to. It kept the sleeve in the knuckle and popped the ball joint stud out, greatly reducing the time and effort of that particular job. OTC is generally quality stuff for tools like this. I've grown to trust the brand greatly for such tools the last 20 years, and so far so good. ... show more

  • Life Saver
This tool worked flawlessly. I had to remove four tie rods to which there was almost no access to two of them, this was the only tool that would work. The compact size allowed it to get right in there and mechanical leverage did the rest. I choose to spend more for this one than cheaper models found at certain tool outlets- their reviews indicated early failure is common. I removed 4 tie rods in a 30+ year old car, so this one appears to be pretty durable (and it's already been on loan to several other friends). It appears well made, as previously mentioned there is a ball bearing on the end of the bolt, and the pivot point is adjustable. Also previously mentioned, when joints separate they do so explosively, I wrapped the joints and tool with a towel to catch it when it releases for safety and to prevent potentially damaging other parts. Lastly, most likely you'll use an adjustable wrench to turn the bolt, but if you need to use a ratchet (I did) you'll need a 15/16" socket- not a common size in most sets. ... show more

  • works as it should
Solidly built. Doesn't destroy the grease cup. Adjusts to two heights. Presses out the pin without damaging the threads (as long as the nut is only backed off so the top of the nut is the same level as the top of the threads) and is built to last. Works on the ball joints and tie rod ends. Mechanic quoted me $350 to replace tie rod ends and tie rod inners on 03 diamante. That is a very good price for parts and labor. Through Amazon I bought this tool and the $20 smooth inner tie rod remover (looks like a muffler clamp with a 3/8 inch square insert) Two moog tie rods for $30 each and two ends for $20 each . (parts could have been cheaper but I like Moog) With this tool and the inner tool the job took only 1 hour for both. So I saved $200 and still have the tools. Not bad. What more can you ask for. Next project is replacing the 9 ball joints on my 65 FJ40. ... show more

  • Didn't work as well as I'd hoped, but adequate for the job.
After damaging the rubber boot on an outer tie rod end using a standard (square-ish shaped) Pitman arm puller, I bought this in the hopes that I could remove the other outer tie rod without damaging the boot. While the scalloped shape of the bottom piece did allow it to slide in between the tie rod end and the other piece better than the clunky square teeth of the Pitman arm puller did, it was still a tight fit and did end up compressing the tie rod end boot a little. This pushed out some of the grease in the boot, which meant I needed to replace it since it did not have a fitting to add more grease. So the bottom line is that it did fit better into the tight space between the tie rod end and the other part, but did not actually work well enough that I could re-use the tie rod end. In terms of strength, the tool is good - I ended up having to exert a huge amount of force (means a lot of turning force on the tool's screw) to get the joint to "pop" out of the other piece, but the tool handled it no problem. ... show more

  • A MUST HAVE tool if you do your own suspension work
Ball joint separation is required in many cars if you will be changing shocks/struts, CV axles, hubs, pulling an engine, etc... In most service manuals an illustration for this very kind of separator is shown but you can not find it in any store open to the general public except Harbor Freight Tools(HFT). However, the HFT version will break the first time you use it. I was very skeptical about the OTC tool when I put it on a Honda that was over 20 years old and had the ball joint separated back in 1997. The tool worked like a charm and did not bend/flex at all. The boot on the ball joint was left completely intact as if nothing had been done. The right tools make the job very easy and this is one of those that will last a lifetime. Go ahead and buy this if you need a quality separator that will get the job done. ... show more
