Very Good, Practical System
Size: 12-Zone Style: Sprinkler Controller
This device replaces a previous sprinkler system controller. Its basic purpose is to turn on and off up to 12 different sprinkler circuits via existing, underground wiring. It may be programmed to water according to a rigid schedule. Better, however, is its "smart" program that automatically estimates needed watering times and schedule based on plant and soil characteristics as well as the weather forecast received over its connection to the internet. There is no subscription fee and the smart application for phones and iPads is also free. Installation in place of the previous controller was straightforward. Connecting the device to the house wifi system, downloading the smart application, and getting it all working was also straightforward. The system worked the first time on all eleven circuits. My experience is that the application is easier to use on the iPad than on a phone due to the larger iPad screen. Setup of the smart system is done circuit by circuit (zone by zone). Quite a few inputs are required to characterize the plants, sunshine, slope, soil and sprinkler system. At first, it appeared that there is no direct way to adjust the actual quantity of water applied to the plants. But there is. One key input is buried, for each circuit, in: Smart Watering Details / Advanced Details / Application Rate. If the input for Application rate (in inches per hour) is reduced, watering time will lengthen, and vice-versa. The overall quantity of water may also be adjusted in Smart Watering Details / Schedule Adjustments / Adjust (second button) / Efficiency. The efficiency slider adjusts the run time up and down - low efficiency requires increased run times. A second inputs controls how often watering occurs, without changing the total amount of water per week or per month. This is in Smart Watering Details / Schedule Adjustments / Adjust (first button) / Max Allowable Depletion. This setting sets how dry the soil may become before watering. A slider adjusts depletion from 35% to 65%. A low value results in more frequent watering of shorter duration. My expectation is that fine-tuning of these values will be needed to find the optimum amount of watering. I also expect that this system will reduce water consumption while preserving plant health. A second, important benefit is that each watering zone (circuit) can be operated manually. This is very helpful in trouble-shooting and adjusting sprinklers. One can stand at the zone location and turn the system on and off at will. I have found this to be very helpful. This is aided by naming each zone so the initial numerical code does not need to be memorized. Conclusion: I am very happy with my purchase. I really like the features and control that the app offers. It's easy to update pictures per zone, rain delay and best of all, Wi-Fi control. Great Product and App, Instructions to hardwire, average with Alexa

I really like this product and found it to be a great value. My land scraper told me my old timer/computer was out, but I told him I thought the cables to the sprinkler valves go cut. He insisted and I bought this one. I ended up being right (did not need the product, need new valve wiring which requires digging up the yard!), but I lucked into this gem! I hard wired mine. My input feed did not have a ground wire so I just capped unit ground wire. I hard wired mine. Take the cable run it all the way to the right of the wiring box, snake it back to the left side and the add two inches and just cut the provided outlet plug. It’s scary to intentionally permanently change a new product but you gotta do it if you are hard wiring. This was better than adding an outdoor outlet in my opinion. Turn off the power at the breaker box (turn off the power before removing the old one if this is a retrofit) Once you cut the cable, strip the wires and use small wire nuts to connect hot to hot and neutral to neutral. (Typically white to white and black to black or red; consult electrician if you are unsure) The interface with the app is intuitive and easy. Photos And labels go with each Zone so no more remembering which zone does what. The app interface is so easy I haven’t even used the manual controls on the timer... I’m sure it’s great. I give it a 4 for Alexa integration. I have three programs 1) Grass, 2) Bushes, and 3)Trees. I’d guess that’s a typical basic yard set up. These are all labeled by name. For trees and bushes the zone names actually match the program. Seems logical to me that if I say “Alexa tell b-hyve to water the bushes” that it would water the bushes only. Unfortunately it decides to water all stations. If I say “Alexa water program B” it waters program B only. That’s not great because then you have to remember what is tied to each program (my wife and kids aren’t going to remember that for sure). I put Bushes to B so that is helping me remember. I live in AZ and the most typical command for wife/kids would be “water the grass” on really hot days or when the grass is drying out or if the kids want to play in the sprinkler; but they will need to remember “Alexa run program A” which is doubtful. “Alexa tell b hyve to set a rain delay” works great. The app is supposed to know the weather for my area and self imposed rain delays, but I haven’t tested that feature. I live in Arizona so I don’t have many opportunities for it. I’m hoping to avoid the need for buying a precipitation sensor. I am testing out the smart water feature. I like to have the programs set up for impromptu watering, but b-hyve warns that the smart watering ignores the fact that a custom program may have run. So, I set up the custom programs to run on days of the week, but then I actually do not select any days of the week. Then I let smart watering do the job, but I still have the option to say “run program A” and it runs for the specified zones and run times. I may add another review if smart watering kills my lawn!!! It is saying for my grass and soil and shade to water 2xweek for 15 min. Typically I water every day for 7 min. 15 min seems like it will pool the water and 2 per week seems like it will dry it out... more to come. One annoying feature is that in Arizona we have winter grass and summer grass. You have to remember to toggle the gras type for these zones twice a year. Affordable wifi irrigation timer with unstable network connection.

I recently purchased a house with a modular 12 Station Rainbird irrigation timer, with all stations being used. The Rainbird comes with a base ‘zero’ module that provides 4 stations. You have to add up to 3 more ($$$$$$) modules to get the full 12 station capability. Well mine had a dead output to one of the stations on the base zero module. I doubt the previous home owner even realized it. So much for reliability. Replacing the base module would be about $70. Add to this that I would also have to buy a separate module to get WIFI capability, again around $70. No way was I going to invest another $140 plus, to make this thing function the way I needed. Enter the Orbit B-Hyve. For slightly more than what I would pay for a Rainbird WIFI module I have a full 12 Station Timer ( no modules required) with built in WIFI. So far it is working well. I was also able to use the old Rainbird Rain Sensor mounted on my gable. I’ve chosen not to use the smart weather feature that uses local internet weather data to delay watering. It’s never accurate where I live since we are kind of in a bubble. We went through late April into early June with essentially a drought. The neighboring township where the weather data is used actually had frequent rain and would cause my timer to delay watering even though we were dry as a bone. I’m using the phone app for Apple devices. Thankfully I don’t use it often as it does have a tendency to lock up and requires the app be closed and reopened. Otherwise it’s fairly intuitive, not to say it couldn’t be improved, but it’s more than adequate. I’m looking forward to being able to trigger the stations from my phone this fall when I blow out the system for winterization. The only other complaint would be that there is an optional Rain Sensor, but getting information about it is a challenge. I did buy one and it’s still sitting in the original box because I was able to use my old Rainbird sensor . Information about installing it or it’s use is also difficult to find. Admittedly it is a very basic normally closed switch that is pulled open by a float when enough rain falls. I personally prefer a rain sensor for the reasons mentioned above. I get the impression Orbit does not share my thoughts given how they seem to be trying to hide the fact it exists. Update: I really want to like this timer, but it’s become a major pain. If there is a power outage or if for some reason your wifi router has needed rebooting, the timer will not reconnect on it’s own. You have to go through the slow sluggish process of reconnecting it to wifi via Bluetooth on your smart phone or tablet. This even requires re-entering the password. Frustrating that it can’t reconnect on it’s own, as if it has no stored memory of the network it was just attached to. Hard to imagine it can’t attempt a reconnection to the same previously connected network on it’s own. It could really use a firmware update. I will say that this is one area that my Rainbird did not have a problem. I have a 4 station Rainbird in the Caribbean where there are frequent power outages. It never fails to reconnect. I’ve considered replacing it with the Orbit for it’s increased station count, but it would be a mistake given it’s behavior. A real shame. Update 2: I've gone back and forth on my review of this product. At one point I lowered it to one star, however wifi connectivity and the iPhone app seem to have improved to the point where I am no longer having issues. I've also installed a new wifi network in my home and connectivity has improved overall. At this point I have started taking the Orbit Timer for granted, which is a good thing. Great system!

I really like this controller. My previous one was 30 years old, and controllers have come a long way. The app is fantastic and you can easily start and stop sprinklers from anywhere. I like how it determines how much and when to water based upon weather, and other conditions. It's mostly set it and forget it. I can't say that this is saving me water, but my lawn is looking much better than it has in years. My local water agency gave me a rebate. After submitting my receipt to them. I LOVE this smart controller. It lets me run every part of my system from my phone no matter where I am. It was easy to install (I'm a 50-year-old soccer mom and still managed to install it on my own) and the instructions were great. Not very SMART

It is a WIFI programmable watering station which should make it easier and more convenient to water than the old rotary-dial base station we are replacing. Here is where it completely fails and why I give it 1 star. It is completely the opposite of user friendly and will not get the watering done for you without a ton of work, or at all. The app UI is a complete fail. I suppose you could say, if it worked properly from the base panel it should get 2 or 3 stars, but that wasn’t the point of getting this WIFI unit. • No fingerprint authentication- Constantly kicks me out of the app and makes me log in with existing account or create new account. This is an extra layer of annoyance since then I have to look it up and try doing all this when you have muddy hands since you are out digging them up. • The rain delay is the beast from hell. I’m sure this is designed to help those areas with water supply issues, but I’m on a well, so my water is free. I have smart watering turned off and the next screen in the app has the water restrictions turned off. It has been three days now with no watering and no notification that is wasn’t going to water. Here’s the daily scenario- as I’m pulling out of my driveway each morning I notice my sprinklers are NOT running. I’m late for work, so I take a moment to sit there and then get greeted by the – I have no idea who you are, would you like to create a new account screen. So then I have to take a few minutes going through emails and note programs to find the email address/password I used. Then I get in and it says, “All watering will resume tomorrow at 8am.” Again, I didn’t get any notification of this. I notice there is a really small rain delay circle below that. I click that circle and it expands into saying 48 hours, 3 days, etc. At this point I have to give up as I’m getting later to work. Get caught in traffic, run right into meetings- you know how it is. So, hours later, I somehow remember that my hundreds of dollars of new seed hasn’t been watered in three days and is surely dried up by now. It is windy and not a good time to try to figure this out from work. My Sweet new WIFI sprinkler controller has failed me, yet again. If I could go back to just a dial and leave it for all days, I’m gonna rip this out and do it. I junked my old one and now it will just cost me double the money to replace. I managed to find the manual start and tried it 27.5 times today. Instead of a big WATER NOW button on the middle of the BLANK screen that serves no purpose, there are some tiny buttons on the bottom. One has a house. You click that and maybe ten other steps to get to where you can start watering manually. Press the triangle and wait, wait, wait, wait. Several minutes later, after your screen has shut off and you have to log back in, you will see it says something like “Timer taking too long”. Ultimately, it says my soil is a 2% moisture, which is amazing it knows that since there is not a sensor or probe, but I believe it, because it hasn’t watered in days. It’s a sneaky little one also because you won’t know it didn’t water unless you start digging around in the app. Another issue is the time of the unit. I set the clock on the actual base. I have set it 5 times now in fact. Nowhere in the app is there any indication of what the time is set at on the base or any way to change it. So perhaps my water issue isn’t due to some rain delay but the time may be off by 12 hours. How would I know? My WIFI time is correct. It has been a month or so since the time change. Who knows. In summary, if you want a cool idea for making your life easier with watering with WIFI and an app you can control when you are out and about- I would not recommend this unit. Based on the flaws in the app and the unit, it needs work before you can trust it to get the job done. You are better off just sticking with the old dial type rather than this. ... show more

Great system that's helping me use only the water I "need"

I got this because my water company provided a rebate for me to upgrade to a "smart" controller (automatically pauses when rain is forecast and/or has a rain meter attached), and my old controller had an electronic problem that was throttling one of my zones. I am very happy I upgraded, and I should have done so sooner! Installation was easy since I was swapping out an old controller. I turned off power, labeled all wires with the zone #s from my old controller, disconnected them, and removed the old system. I painted the wall, then installed the new box (different size, hence the need for painting), and then connected the wires to each zone. My installation is outside, and the box has proven to be sufficiently weather-resistant, and build-quality good enough to survive 4 seasons. I installed it early in the 2024 season and am writing this review about a year later. Programming the system via the Android app is really easy. You can add photos of each zone to remember which is which. I use the local weather forecast feature to auto-delay due to forecast rain. If it actually rains when not forecast (or a low % chance of rain below the delay threshold), or the rain is really heavy, it's super easy to open the app and click the "rain delay" button and choose the # of days, depending on how much rain you just received. I love being able to adjust via my phone (Android). In the spring when turning the system on for the first time, it's easy to cycle through each zone and inspect each emitter. If I'm adjusting and run out of time, it's easy to turn it back on without all the running back and forth to the controller. In the fall, the remote app makes it easier to blow my system out. I've rarely used the physical box. But more than that, I love being able to adjust my watering. For example, as the days get shorter and the landscape needs less water, I can easily dial back each zone to 90%, then 80%, then 70%, and so forth, without changing the programmed number of minutes for each zone. If it automatically delays because of a forecast 30% or higher chance of rain (you can set the threshold) and it doesn't actually rain, it's easy to cancel the weather delay or run each zone manually via the app. I love that there's no more running outside at night in the rain, in my pajamas, to manually turn off the sprinkler to save some water! ... show more
