  • Excellent Product, Must Have
Style: HD141X
Excellent Product, I couldn't be any more satisfied then what I already am. Although I am a novice with projectors I'd like to think of myself as a gadget guru. I'm very familiar with electronics and how they work and the features most offer. This is my first projector that I have purchased and I'm glad i did. At first I was debating whether I should buy the Optoma HD26, or the Optoma GT1080, I really didn't feel like getting other brands like the BenQ or the ViewSonic also 2 great brands but they didn't seem to meet my expectations. So I looked carefully at the reviews ups and downs, on all 3 projectors and they all came with positive reviews, i decided to op-out from the Optoma GT1080 because it didn't have zoom, sadly no lens shift, always a must but hey no big deal. The throw ratio looked amazing just from 3 feet almost 100" screen, sadly another reason why opted-out, because I didn't have anywhere else to put other then 10 feet and up. The Optoma HD26 looked promising, slightly higher lumens, higher contrast ration, also had zoom, however didn't have the cash and didn't feel like waiting any longer to get one. Instead I decided to go with the HD141X, I needed a projector not only for home movies, but a monitor as well, and Screen to play my Games on. I'm glad i decided to get the HD141X because I play a-lot of video games and watch a-lot of blurays, so not only did I need the low millisecond delay from my screen to the game but i also needed the quality of the picture. Definietly amazed at the picture quality that this projector throws at the wall, and this is directly right on my wall, I still haven't bough a screen for it. Blacks are Blacks, Reds are Reds, Yellows and blues are all there I mean I was blows at the quality of it, I was actually expecting less then this but I was like HECK YEAH!!! for a 600 Dollar budget projector you cant go wrong with this. 3D is actually pretty good I'm using the incredisonic vsd410 dlp 3D glasses and they look amazing. The projector is currently connected to my home theater system and everything else from my game system to my computer is all connected directly to my system I'm glad i made this Purchase, its been a whole month and this projector is really kicking, usually I use it at-least 10 hours a day at an average. PROS: 1: Out of the box the projector is wrapped up really nicely and tight, so they did a great job with the packaging. 2: Has a nice slick piano look and feel to it and it isn't too big that it takes a-lot of space and its not too heavy either. 3: Picture Quality is Amazing, for a 600 dollar budget projector that's Full 1080P you really cant go wrong with this. This actually beats most projectors that are 3-4Xs the price that i have seen in my local stores. and no its no LED Edge and its no Samsung so the colors aren't so super bright that everything is colorful, colors are just right on this projectors and with calibration the picture quality looks amazing. 4: 3D looks really good, not incredible looks really good, of-course I haven't tried the Vesa 3D so I can't judge it too much for this, specially since I'm using the DLP third party glasses. Lets just say 3D looks really good.( this is user preference) 5: This is a Plus and a must for me, This Projector was built for Gaming. Every game I have thrown at this projector it passed with flying colors from fast passed racing to multi-effect grenade explosion multi-missile targeting and FPS Games this game passed with little to no delay. the highest I have ever gotten on this projector was 37 milliseconds but no higher then that at times it really didn't go any higher then 17 milliseconds and it stayed at that for a few hours. Did I mention Picture Quality looks amazing. 6: It has 3000 Lumens, which means its great for rooms that have a-lot of lighting coming through their window or constantly have the light on like myself (recently since I installed this projector I haven't had to turn on the lights because its super bright that it brightens up my entire room) 7: Easy to use and setup, only took me less then 10 minutes hooking up setting up and adjusting the location where I needed it to be to get a good clear and big picture. CONS: 1: My projector did not come with a lens cap, although it said it's suppose to come with a lens cap, I have heard that many others who purchased this projector complained that their unit didn't come with 1 either. Although I'm not going to reem them about this or give them a -1 star they should really take care to make sure everything is inside the box. (Glad for Amazons customer service upon realizing this and called them, they refunded me for the loss of the lens cap) 2: To me the projector feels cheaply made, it may be just me but it looks to me like they didn't put too much work on the built quality so at times I'm afraid that if it fell off my shelve the entire unit will get damaged completely. Of-course the picture quality of the projector will make up for it and make you forget that this projector feels so cheaply made. +1 (until it drops and splits in 2 LOL!!!) 3: This projector is really bright, I cant stress that enough, although it's not a big issue for me and this would be in a pro's section, for some this may be a big issue this projector could blind someone just by running into the beam for a few seconds. 4: Upon turning the projector on and ready to go, not only is the brightness and contrast set really bright but the colors seem a bit off making them look washed off whites had no detail on them. (With a little tweaking colors and whites looked really good with texture) 5: The projector does get quite hot so it produces a-lot of heat of-course with a really bright lamp its expected to get really hot. 6: Upon using, the fan is really loud, I had to tweak it a bit and change it to eco mode to tone down the fan because I could hear it working overtime. You have the choice of having a loud fan to help with some of the heating or let it run at a low db but increasing the heat ratio (wish they had a fan adjuster to set it to what level the fan would work at) 7: 3D looks good, not great but good, this isn't the manufactures fault since i haven't tried all available 3D options however this does not have 2d-3d conversion kinda disappointed since my last TV did have Real 2D-3D conversion and real 3D but not too disappointed. This is user preference. 8: This projector is a true 120hz however it only works when playing video games at 720p not 1080p that also includes playing 3D games at 720p, you can play 1080p 3d games but at 24hz definietly not going to play 3D games at 24hz. At 1080p 2D you will only play at 60hz, for most people this is a downfall, for me I'm not too upset that I'm going to freak out that I can't play at 120hz, I'm useto 60-120hz so in reality this is also a user preference. So far the Pro's out weight the Con's and for a projector that produces an amazing 1080p with 3d picture quality you cant go wrong this projector. One Very Happy Customer. ... show more

  • Great projector. Minor flaws.
Style: HD141X
Pros: It's an awesome 3D projector that does what it says it does for $600. That's awesome. Cons: Most important: The audio out is Stereo only; if you feed a 5.1 Dolby Surround signal in, it can't pass it on - you have to pass plain 2-speaker Stereo in, and then you can pass that out. So if for example your audio is coming in over HDMI, and you run speakers out of this projector, you're stuck with a big beautiful 3D projection and crappy dated 2-speaker sound. Seems like a major mistake on Optoma's part and I wish this wasn't a corner they'd cut. In the case of devices like the Playstation 3 this rules out any option of surround sound, because that one output port gets used up by the HDMI running to the projector and you've lost your 5.1 audio capabilty. It doesn't come with a ceiling mount, which is fair... some people wouldn't want one. But it does mean an additional search and cost for most customers. The fan is noticeable in Full lamp brightness. It includes both a high pitched whir of the motor and the venting sound of the air. If you can find Eco mode (see below), it's basically silent; I installed this thing directly over my head and the fan has no whir, and a light sound of moving air, that could be mistaken for a light wind outside, a neighbor running the water, anything - basically negligible. There are in fact "Rainbow Effects." I didn't know what those were before buying one, so here's what they are: When you just look at the image, there's no loss in quality (in fact, the image is amazing, much better than I thought I could get out of a painted wall). But if you have bright white lines in the image, then shift your eyes all over the place, the white lines appear to streak into a rainbow, briefly, until your eyes come to a stop. It's kind of a wild human perception situation, since again if your eyes are still there's no hint at all that there's a rainbow in here somewhere. The effect isn't common for me, but it seems like there are 3 scenarios where this might occur: 1) Following a mouse cursor, or a little game character/thing, across a screen that has a lot of banded white on it. I'd guess most games wouldn't, but if for some reason you're using this to screw around on a computer desktop, this would be common. 2) Darting to a different part of the screen in an action scene, with a lot of bright white lasers/explosions/lens flares. 3) If your eyes wiggle more than the average person I bet you hate this - I know everyone's do a little, I assume some more than others. A friend says they get constant rainbow effects on projectors like these. I bet he suffers from Wiggle Eye, a name I made up just now. The manual is on a CD meant for PCs, which is quite behind the times. I'm guessing your modern buyer savvy enough to buy this awesome projector has a 50/50 chance of still owning a computer with a CD drive, especially given the MHL feature meant to project off of a smartphone or tablet. I no longer own anything with a CD drive other than a gaming console, which can't load PC software, so that disc is a useless dino for me. Fortunately the manual is online, although it is a bit confusing since it's for the nearly identical Optoma HD26. The manual is confusing because "nearly identical" is important. For example, they've changed how the Lamp Brightness works. Dynamic Black can be set to On. Once you do, Lamp Brightness becomes locked to "Dynamic," with no clear way to unlock it. The manual doesn't cover why either, because it isn't for this projector. To solve this turn off Dynamic Black; Lamp Brightness now offers "Full" and "Eco." The documented "Dynamic" as a third option, but, that's not available; to get it back, enable Dynamic Black. This is pretty clumsy. The menu in general is a little fiddly, and the settings don't offer any fine control. For example it's clear the Lamp is capable of being dimmed between 100% and 30% and Dynamic Black will do this for you, but there's no way to manually set this - it's just Full (100%), Eco (30%), or automatic when you set Dynamic Black to On. There's no way to finely tune color levels, and a number of settings you'd expect to be up top, like Lamp Brightness, are buried in unexpected, Advanced areas of the menus. There are times losing the HDMI signal from a wiggled laptop for example can cause the projector to just never find the signal again. To resolve this you can usually unplug and plug the HDMI cable but sometimes need to restart the projector. If you fiddle with the settings in the menus enough you can crash the projector. That said, I doubt I'd fiddle with them much after the first exploration when I was getting it setup. The remote isn't really for this projector. It has a few buttons that don't do anything, and lacks a few buttons you'd really wish you had, like Lamp Brightness. All of that said, I have a 90" projection that's clear as a plasma on my wall for $600, $700 after taxes, mount, paint, etc. That's fricking awesome. ... show more
