  • Works great & easy to install
Works great & installed okay. A little bit wider than my original by nearly 2 inches, from the positive terminal to the negative. The height and depth were the same. It fit okay, the negative terminal is closer to the back wall of the car than the original, but not a problem. The air hose popped on no problem, but it is a snug stretch. Everything clamped down okay like it was before. Took a little over an hour due to heart burn from leaning over. But there's a video of someone changing it out in about 5 minutes. My battery even had over 12 volts already. My original 2008 battery lasted 7 years. I probably could have kept using it even though it only had about 10 volts because it kept working if I didn't blast my music, but I've drained it multiple times within the last year by pumping my music too loud and draining the battery below the threshold of starting the car. My base model 2008 Prius has some nice speakers that really kick out some thumping bass. ;) I haven't seen any MPG gain over my old battery as some people claim. But it does feel a bit more responsive, like it has more power when you have to punch it to pass someone. To check your battery voltage without a volt meter, press the start button without pressing the brake to turn on the accessories without power to the car. Press and hold the Display button while tapping an empty area on the left side top and then bottom 3 times making a total taps of 6. You'll need to tap through some menus to get to the battery voltage. Do a Google search to find how to properly get to that menu, because there's also another way by using the head lights switch too. All in all a great buy and easy to install. ... show more

  • Perfect fit and a 100% replacement for 2007 Prius - 5 years 11 months of trouble free life
Update: 2021-Feb-03 I installed the battery on March 14, 2015. Somewhere between Dec 17, 2020 and February 1, 2021 after sitting all that time in the brutal winter snow while I was away the battery finally gave up its life. It was putting out 1 volt when I measured it with the temperature at -5C. This battery lasted me almost 5 years and 11 months. The downside is the price is now $249.00 vs $169.74. The Prius has more than 222,000 miles on it and this battery has been there since about 78,000. Still I will be getting another - Great job OPTIMA! ---------------------- 2007 Prius wouldn't start after a brutal 2015 winter in PA. The original battery would not charge and voltage was only 6 volts. A major hometown chain wanted $222.00 plus a core for exchange. I went back home and saw the exact same battery for sale on Amazon for $169.74. It arrived in two days though it was initially out of stock. These batteries are stored inside the car's passenger compartment and are designed as to be leak free unlike standard batteries. These batteries appear to be permanently sealed. The battery went into the Prius without much of an issue and was a perfect fit. All connectors fitted properly. I did find the thick sliding plastic handle a bit troublesome since it could not be detached. Make sure everything is beneath the handle and all will fit fine. The original had a fabric handle and it would flatten easily. Battery was fully charged on arrival according to the charger. These batteries are deep cycle. Best to keep any secondary charging before use to 2 amps or less or use a deep cycle charger to prevent damage if it needs charging. It took about an hour to get the job done. BTW if you hook a jumper cable to the emergency jumper under the hood while exchanging the battery you can keep all your presets and other personal info in the computer system. If you fail to provide power while changing out the battery in the rear you might have to go back and reprogram everything - even bluetooth. ... show more

  • Excellent alternative to blowing $350 or more
***Updated 5/10/2017*** see items 9 and later 1. My 2005 Prius started giving me a red triangle occasionally a couple of years ago. It got more and more frequent, with an on-screen message to put the car in P on a level surface. At the time, I did a little bit of research and saw some posts indicating that it may be the battery, but the car would eventually start (turn off, then back on) and I blew it off. Independently, I thought my gas mileage was going down but I wrote it off as imagination and bad driving habits. 2. Some posts wrote about how to test the battery output by pressing Menu and cycling the headlights three times. I was dumb enough to do that with the car on, so I was testing the voltage of the alternator. Do it in Accessory mode (no foot on the brakes when you power up). The new battery puts out 13.1. If you're lower than 12 after driving for a few hours then you need help. When I finally did do it with the car in Acc mode, the computer would shut down. I was thinking "bad computer," but "bad battery" was the answer. My battery couldn't even put out enough juice to run the computer. 3. The battery flips the high-voltage relay, runs the lights and computer and various other things--including the rear hatch release. If you don't replace it while there's still a little juice, you will need to go on a diet and climb into the back with the rear seats down to release the hatch. It also runs your smartkey system, and that's a real drain on it. When you first start having problems, turning off the smartkey (button under the steering column) is a very good idea. Also, leaving the headlight switch in the on position causes some drain and immediately puts a heavy load on the battery, so turn it off before starting the car when your battery is weak. 4. Two AAA calls in the last couple of months sealed it, and I ordered the battery. Caution: Though I think the shipping is as fast as it can be, the battery cannot be air shipped so it took longer than I expected (seven days to receive). It finally arrived at the house while I was stuck in the Costco parking lot waiting for AAA for the third and final time. The battery was very well packed in a box with foam balls (not messy foam, though) and a sturdy foam protector top and bottom. 5. Installation took me an hour. There are a few great videos on YouTube. The hardest part is probably cleaning out the back of the car. You pull the carpet, pull the cargo cover, pull out the cargo tray and start going. You need a 10mm and 12mm socket, and nutdrivers in the same sizes are very useful. My advice to the installer is to be patient and careful. You don't need to force anything on or off (except the High Voltage vent cover which is strong plastic) so if you're in a position where something isn't moving easily you should stop and re-think. 6. After installing, my car started right up. Some people may get these batteries discharged, but mine had plenty of juice. The car "felt" better to me when it started--it may be imagination but I really think the lights are a bit brighter. 7. Finally, the surprise. My mileage jumped about three MPG. I finally reasoned that the alternator has to work hard to put a charge in the dead battery, which affects mileage. 8. Conclusion: the best $180 I've spent on my Prius. 9. I had to replace the first Optima battery. My car sat in the driveway for nearly two years without even starting it—a mistake I will never make again. 10. A comment on manually opening the hatch: you have to reach very deep to contact the lever. I have long fingers, but I was still almost to my knuckle before I felt it. There are decoy pieces of metal protecting the lever. You'll know when you're touching the lever. Also, I recommend having a confederate standing outside to pull up the hatch. It's surprisingly difficult to get leverage when you're down there. 11. Watch several of the installation videos on YouTube before commencing. You need a 10mm and a 12mm socket. You will need a deep socket for the 12mm because you'll be removing a nut from a tall threaded post. 12. Take frequent pictures as an aid for reassemble the car. 13. There are a couple of bolts that are close to black holes. Be careful when removing and when reinstalling the bolts. If you can get your hands on one, a magnetic socket set is very worthwhile. If you don't have a whole set, order the sockets a la carté. Good luck!! ... show more

  • Updated review - Piece of junk. Stopped working at 1 year and 4 months.
Optima Batteries 8171-767 (DS46B24R) YellowTop Prius Battery Updated review in August 2018: In June 2018, one year 4 months after I purchased the battery, it stopped working. By that, I mean it doesn't hold charge even after it's been jumped. After much anxiety and attempts at GoodBoys and other body shops (by the way, no one wants to touch a Prius), I finally gave in and have a new battery installed at a local Toyota dealer, at which point I was told that one of the nodes was broken for some reason and I suspect that's the reason for the issues I was having. Speaking of claiming the warranty, it was not a smooth sailing either. Fortunately, I got my refund in the end. If you are in the same shoes, just be adamant about having Amazon (if Amazon was the seller) refund to you until you talk to the right person (the problem with off-shore service center). Refer to the return policy in the Automotive Items section, and you'll know you are well covered. Bottom line, I do not recommend this battery. *************************************************** My 2010 Prius does not get to be driven a lot. After coming back from a trip, I realized it could not be started. At first, I suspected that I had left the light on. Then the episodes came more frequent. Some online research led me to understand that Prius has a separate 12V battery just for starting the car and the warranty expires after 4 years or so (I don't remember the exact amount of time). After agonizing over the fact that I'd fork out a few hundred dollars (depending on where you have it done) to have a new battery installed, I finally made the purchase at the point where the battery simply did not hold any power anymore. My purchase decision was made based on online review of YellowTop batteries. Supposedly, they hold better power than the OEMs that they use at the Toyota dealership (and it costs a couple of hundred dollars to have it installed). I also found a nice YouTube video that shows exactly how to remove the old and install the new battery. The most challenging part is probably finding a 10mm wrench. :-) Overall, the installation took about an hour. It's been in my car for about one year. Fingers crossed it still works in the next few years. ... show more

  • Great battery for Gen II Prius
My original battery started acting up after 6 years, which was pretty good life in a car. If I left any accessory on after stopping the car, the prius computers were likely not to boot on the next try causing me to have to jump start. It seems as the only two options for the Prius Gen II are the factory battery, or this one. I have used Optima car batteries in the past and liked them, so it wasn't a hard decision. The battery is an exact fit space wise. It is physically a bit bigger than the 24ah battery it replaced (no smart key option on my car.) That size difference doesn't affect the install as the bracket adjusts in the car. The posts line up and are the correct size, and the vent connector plugs right in, no issues. Installation was a bit more involved than on the average car, but only took me about 30 minutes, taking my time. I just removed the carry strap that the Optima has, it just slides off easily. Performance of the battery is outstanding, this is what the Prius should be equipped with in my opinion. It is a true AGM battery, can't spill and doesn't need to be maintained in the tough location on the Prius. The car's mileage has picked up by a few MPG now as the internal resistance of this one is probably much lower and takes a charge faster and easier and the car doesn't waste energy trying to top off the original battery that would no longer take a full charge. When I power off the car now, even that water pump that kicks in to save hot water to the vacuum bottle runs faster. I highly recommend this battery as a replacement. ... show more

  • Fit well into 2004 Prius. I saved >$100 by doing DYI replacement on a Prius as compared to going to the dealer
Used it to replace the original 12v battery in our 2004 Prius. It fit well, installation was not difficult (check out YouTube videos for instructions since it's quite different for a Prius compared to "regular" cars). Saved about $150 or more by buying the Optima and doing the installation myself as opposed to going to the dealer. The only slight issue with the installation was the battery ventilation hose in the car - it seems to have just barely enough length to fit the original Toyota battery and the Optima seemed maybe a few mm shorter. I was able to get it connected w/o too much hassle though. FYI, the 12v battery in a Prius has a somewhat unusual function in that it is used to boot up the on-board computer, while the energy to actually turn the crankshaft and start the engine seems to be drawn from the hybrid battery. Due to this limited use of the 12v battery, its failure becomes less obvious than on regular cars, and it's harder to diagnose. If your car's dash and clock light up when you press the "start" button but are somewhat dim and the car refuses to switch to "Ready" mode, requiring a jumpstart - know that it's your 12v battery, even if this happens quite rarely (in our case, it was once every few months). We were quite puzzled by the fact that it would seem to occur randomly and rarely, and the dealer wasn't able to diagnose it either - they said the battery tested OK. Don't get confused like we did, and replace your 12v battery in the Prius immediately on the first symptoms of failure to power up. Otherwise, you risk getting stranded. Also, there it a YouTube video on how to use the Prius on-board computer to check the on-board voltage and do a DIY diagnosis of the 12v battery by cycling through the modes and observing the voltage changes reported by the computer. I found it really useful. ... show more

  • Upgrade from OEM battery
Item arrived on time and securely boxed with protective foam on all sides, as well as top and bottom. The measurements were a little larger than my OEM battery, which required me to purchase a longer bolt and a stack of flat washers to allow the reinstallation of the hold down bracket, permitting the battery to be securely held in place without bouncing around. This battery is for the Prius with the smart key system and navigation; and those cars have a larger cradle and hold down bracket. Just be advised that if your prius is the base model, you may want to get this bracket (available for < $20 on the internet) when using this size of Optimus Yellowtop. The extra CCA and reserve capacity is worth having and you will be thankful the next time an interior light is left on by accident and the battery still starts your car. The battery was fully charged upon delivery and I used a YouTube video (there are several) to assure the installation went smooth. I'm writing this review 41/2 years after installation of this yellow top battery, and it's still going strong. I have had zero issues with the starting system, other than the map light being left on several times for 24+ hours and rendering the battery unavailable for use until a jump or charge is provided. Besides the abuse due to the map light or rear cargo light being left on, there are a few gismos this battery powers when the car is off, and the battery has always had enough power to get the car going, even after sitting for a week. The resting voltage is 12.7V, and hopefully I can squeeze 2-3 more years out of it. When I have used a charger, Mine has a setting for AGM batteries, so as to not damage the battery with too much current. AGM batteries are more sensitive to overcharging, and I suspect that's the reason my first replacement with an OEM battery only lasted two years-- using a regular battery charger to charge, and discharging it to < 10V by leaving an inside light on several times. The yellow top battery has been subjected to deep discharge more times than I care to say, and has recharged without an issue. I would definitely buy again, but the price has gone up $90+. Ouch! ... show more
