This is super easy to use.. just plug n play.. it gives exactly what is wrong with the engine and what you need to know. Worked great on my husbands 04 F-150.. its a work truck and he puts it through some abuse.. stop and go from job to job everyday.. so it was running rough.. hooked this up.. and it told what the issue was.. very simple.. no need to have a laptop or app to use.. and excellent customer service! ... show more

This unit is very cool. It doesn’t require power as it is powered by the data port. This means the unit turns off once you unplug it from the car but it also means you don’t have to mess with batteries. The build quality is pretty good. It retains the data and you can print it out from your computer. It has a ruggedized surface and a medium sized backlit screen. It’s a simple black-and-white LCD screen not one of the fancy colored screens do you find on the more expensive models. I’m not sure that actually adds any value to the device. So I’m happy not to pay for a color. It has a comprehensive library of all the standard codes and I/M readiness tests. You can record reset and clear the data. I am not certain because I don’t own of those kinds of cars but I believe this will allow you to reset certain indicators that mechanics charge money for simply flipping a switch. I know Volkswagen used to have one of those. I can’t verify this but I think if the code is part of the OBD2 System it can do that. If it is model specific then it probably will not. It provides all the standard OBD2 codes. Fuel system, powertrain, emissions engine etc. This will work with any car with an OBD2 port. It also keeps a library of the codes in the unit rather than just supply you with a number, you can select the code and the unit will tell you what it means. Some cars have codes specific to their makes and models that are outside of the OBD system. This unit will not read those. It has a USB-C port which I like that allows you to update the code library and print out reports. And most importantly, it comes with a comprehensive and understandable instruction book. The device is not compatible with macOS. It will still work on your car of course but you will have to update it through a Windows computer. This unit is a really good value for people who need to diagnose their cars then they don’t have any model specific needs. I appreciate the fact that the company provides updates via online and you can plug the unit into a computer and print out reports via their management software ( which is functional but looks very Windows 95) and I appreciate the good instruction book and website support. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. A good tool to have if you pay attention to your car. I am the kind of car guy that takes really good car of my vehicles, does all the maintenance and light repair work that I have the time, tools, and skill to do. I take it to the dealer or a really good independent shop for the rest. Recently I had a check engine light come on in a 1996 28,000 mile car and I was losing sleep not knowing the cause of the problem. After an expensive trip to the dealer I found out that the car recorded a misfire. It hadn’t been driven in many months so it seems logical. It was also time for new spark plugs. I wish I had a diagnostic tool like this at the time to give me some understanding and peace of mind. I am late to the game with this technology so I am extra excited to have a tool that can do these functions. There are more sophisticated units that can do a lot of things that I don’t have time to learn. That is for the pros or extreme amateur hobbyist. I tried to update the software, but the OBDMATE software is only compatible with Windows. Ugh! Are we still in the late 90’s? I have a Mac, iPad, and iPhone stuff, like many people. I believe there is software to run Windows on a Mac, but again, I don’t have time to figure it out. In a world when so many are running Apple devices, especially regular car owners wanting a tool like this for their tool box, not having compatibility with Apple is a head scratcher. The device was easy to use. Make sure your car is off, plug it in, turn the car to the on position or start it if your are not in a closed garage. Turn the car off before unplugging it. The menus will require some familiarity. Not all functions are supported by every car. I’m glad I have this device! I wish I could update it with a Mac!! ... show more
