These Filters Were Purchased To Replace The Set That Came With The Cat Fountain. The Original Filter Were 2 Pieced Were These New Ones Are One Pieced. With The Original Filter Were Two Parts With Being White Portion Catches Debris In The Water And The Black Portion Containing Carbon That Filters Out Impurities. Having This In Two Separate Pieces Made For Easy Cleaning . Having The New Filters One Pieced Takes A Bit More Work To Clean Them. In Either Case Run Both Under Running Tap Water And Squeeze The Filters To Work Out Any Build Up In Them. Doing So Allows More Use From the Filters . Once The White Part of The Filter Starts To Change Color ( Dingy Brown) Or The Tank Water Begins To Get A Oder To It ( Black Carbon Filter Not Filtering Impurities) This Is Time To Replace The Filters. The New Filters Are One Piece And Take A Bit More Time To Clean Them . Since The White And Black Filter Is Conjoined As One Run This Under Tap Water In Reverse With The Black Side Up. This Will Force The Debris In The White Filter To Wash Through It Out If The Bottom. The Impurities In The Black Filter Can Pass Easily Through The White One. Cleaning It With The White Filter Facing Up Will Just Force The Debris Into The Black Filter Making It Overall Harder To Clean. I'm On My First New Filter And Just As The Directions Show Run Tap Water Through It Before Placing It Into The Top Bowl Cap. I Have 5 Cats And They Enjoy The Running Water Coming From Cat Fountain. When Cleaning Just Disassemble The Unit By Hand . Not Sure If This Plastic Used Is Dishwasher Safe And May Make The Plastic Brittle Over time By Repeated Washing It In The Dish Washer. I Just Run Warm Tap Water And Use A Brush Designed For Cleaning Sink Items To Scrub It Down. On The Tube Portions Just Run Water Through It. You May Want To Also Clean The Inside Of The Pump Housing From Deris. Use A Fine Jewelry Screw Driver And Carefully Pry The Face Off Of The Pump . This Will Come Apart In To Pieces. you'll have The Face Cover & A Separate Piece With A O Ring Inside It. I Clean Those Parts And The Fan Blade Inside The Pump That Moves The Water Through The Fountain Softly With A Toothbrush. This Will Help To Remove Debris And Any Other Build Up Insider It . Once Cleaned Place The Plastic Piece With The O Ring Towards The Fan Blade. It Can Only Be Placed In On Configuration. ( Small Holes Towards The Outside With The Bigger Hole Towards The Center. Snap The cover Back On And Place Inside The Tank Per Instructions. You Can Either Fill The Tank With Water While Assembling It Or Add It To The Bowl On Top After Assembling. The Water Will Fill The Bowl Then Flow Through The Filters Into The Tank. I Do This To pre filter The Water Before Using. This Is Just A Personal Choice. After Adding Water To The Tank You Can Plug The Pump In For Use. Don't Recommend Operating The Pump Dry Out Of Water. ... show more

These water filters are great. I followed the instructions soaked in water for five minutes, rinsed it out and put it in my water fountain, and both of my cats are happy and enjoy the clean water.
