This is probably the best Detector for the money that is available. Target Pinpoint is awesome! Really easy to use! Completely waterproof too! As a newbie, I found the SIMPLEX LITE exactly what I was looking for; that is, a reasonable-cost, better quality detector that is a step above the many lower-cost devices. Very easy to assemble and use after a 3-hour USB charge up (but, the wall-plug-in converter is not included). Did a quick checkout in my backyard. It worked great using out-of-box, the default settings of FIELD and ALL METAL modes. . plus a small shovel. At 4" to 6" down, I found a flat softdrink can, a U-shaped fence nail, and a piece of tin foil. PRO: Lots of "bells & whistles" options and settings.. . that you don't have to use. Like the smaller 9" detection coil and PINPOINT feature. CONs: a 12-hr rechargeable Battery (Good for a session), but it has to be factory replaced when it fails. Manual shows an extra-cost "Optional Battery Pack", but I can't find it on the Internet. Manual gives a mix of info on 3 SIMPLEX detectors, but no separate section for each device. BOTTOM LINE: Highly Recommended for a newbie and occasional user.

As for the detector, itself, it works fine. Found things in my yard that I had missed with two other detectors. I bought this one so I could venture into the water, as my Vanquish isn’t fully water proof. It seems like it will do the job. Bad side is that the screen protector and digging tool were missing from the box. You expect to get what’s listed in the description and when you don’t it’s disappointing. The way things were thrown into the box, it appears I received a returned unit, minus what was taken out. The factory screen protector was off centered and appeared that it had been removed and replaced. I hope the first owner enjoys my digging tool.

I haven’t used a metal detector in 50 years, having bought mine during such a craze in the early 1970s that a store existed in my local mall, selling only metal detectors. The one I bought then cost about the same as this one, but had a single volume control…no other controls. (You powered it on when you plugged in the rubber and metal headphones that made you look like a WWII radio operator.) I think it was “lightweight” at something under 30lbs. 🙂 What a difference from then to now. This detector offers a ton of features in comparison: Different modes for soil or sand types, displays of alert strength, metal type, item depth, etc. The owner's manual is informative and well-written. I appreciate the little note in there about the “metal detecting code of ethics” and the tool-less assembly was quick and easy. I found the detector to be pretty light and well-balanced when using it an hour at a time. I’m more inclined to be using it in the summer, but wanted to note that the velcro strap that goes over your forearm is a little awkward if you have a winter coat on, and that the display (Like all LCD displays) can look a little wonky through polarized glasses. I really thought that I would miss the Bluetooth headphone option on my model, but the volume was more than sufficient to hear the detections near the shore with a mild surf and a nearby road. Though BT headphones would be a nice advantage in an area where I wanted to be silent, the manufacturer supplies a hardwire adaptor to let you use a ¼” headphone jack (note that it is not the more common ⅛” size found more commonly on consumer equipment). In my first hour, I became pretty comfortable at starting to determine what might be something of interest and what might be a bottle cap. Unfortunately, being mid-winter, I haven’t found anything exciting yet. But I look forward to warmer weather when the masses are on the beaches again! I could seriously only find one issue that I wasn’t crazy about: The battery in this unit is not user-replaceable. That would ordinarily be enough of a concern that I would knock a star off. But in this case, the detector can be used with external battery packs as well, so that’s certainly an easy enough solution to a waning battery five or 7 years from now. I would feel very comfortable recommending this metal detector to a friend!

So far the product seems to be working as it should. I’m finding all sorts of metal objects buried up too 8”. Wasn’t very happy with how the item was packaged. The metal detector was in a large box with no packing paper or bubble plastic. The box was half open and when I opened the metal detector box, everything was dirty, had a scratched screen, a little dent in the base and the instructions were damaged as well ( thankfully I can pull them up online). When I upgrade I will make sure not to use this seller.
