  • High Quality for a Reasonable Price
We have two of these that we use to keep the batteries charged on a couple of cars. These vehicles, particularly an older 4-wheel drive, do not get a lot of use, so the batteries can discharge and sulfate in a surprisingly short period of time. I have found that the life of a battery that is kept properly charged by a good quality smart charger is greatly extended, typically far beyond the battery's warranty period. So, even though this is more expensive than the numerous dumb chargers, it works far better and will pay for itself in battery replacement savings. I have both of these chargers mounted under the hood close to the battery. The bracket/strap that comes with this charger is easy to mount. In addition, you can disconnect the charging wires from the alligator clamps and fasten it to a standard battery terminal. The cars are in a garage so it is easy to run an extension cord from a ceiling outlet (same outlet that powers the garage-door opener) and run it to the charger. ... show more

  • loved loved loved
love this thing so much, I connected it directly to the battery terminals and it's a permanent resident on my motorcycle now, so it's way easy to charge it if need be, I plan to buy the matching battery for it because of how good it is, only issue I have is that I was under the impression that it can auto detect batteries style types and voltage amounts, tho it did know I had a 12V on it, it did not recognize that it was an AGM battery. I had to manually input it, which was fine by me, but that's the only hiccup I have on it. other than that I highly recommend this charger to all. so worth it in price and quality. ... show more

  • Better than expected
I originally purchased the NOCO Genius 1 which worked fine but was very slow for what we actually use it for. We have run a mobile business out of an RV which will use most of the battery power running lights and what not in the RV if the generator is not running. Some days we need a quick turnaround and the battery would not be completely charged overnight. The NOCO Genius 5 drastically improves recharging time to 3-4 hours. I also like the fact that Genius 5 gives you a better understanding of where you stand during the charging process with additional led lights. ... show more

  • REPAIR MODE // Compared to an older Noco Genius G3500; using for Solar/PV battery bank
Update (2/15/23): Used this 5A Noco on my car battery the other day. The battery is 4 years old, and the car gets drive at most, once a week, so not ideal for battery health. Once a year (annually), I try to charge the battery. When I hooked it up, and ran it in normal charging mode, it quickly finished (within five minutes). I switched over to repair mode, which applies a small pulsing current, and ran it for two cycles (repair mode shuts off after 4 hours), so 8 hours total. Using a battery tester (measures battery resistance), the overall health improved after 8 hours. So the repair mode definitely does something different than the regular charging mode. Summary: I have had a NOCO Genius G3500 charger since 2017, and it's a great charger. Recently started building a solar/PV battery bank from old marine (Optima) bluetop deep cycle batteries. So the G3500 was getting a good workout, especially the repair function. So I will be comparing this next generation GEN5X1 in that role. I had ordered the GEN5X1 back in April 2021, and this past Black Friday, the GENIUS5 (5A) was on sale, so I decided to add that one. Also use the Kyzee Load Tester frequently while charging, so listing this that as well as a related product. Testing: On an old really dead Yuasa motorcycle battery. Impressively, it was at 3-4 volts, and the Noco started right up in regular (not repair) mode. Going to let this run a couple of days, and see where it ends up (not expecting it to revive this one). Recommendations: 1) In general, the slower you charge the battery the better it is for the overall longevity and lifespan of the battery. The trade off being that you might have to charge a really dead battery for a couple of days. For batteries less than 100AH (the Optima I was testing on is 55AH), a 5-AMP charger is a good middle ground. 2) Having a good battery tester is also a must, I can recommend either of the two below. Pros: Good fit & finish; repair function; name brand recognition; constant product improvement. Cons: None for now. Conclusion: At $70, rating this 5-stars. If you need onboard mounting, get the onboard model instead. • Thought Unit Was Defective
Got this as a battery "maintainer" for an SUV I don't drive all that often. Followed directions, hooked it up, selected the proper type of battery (12 v) and unit said 25% charge for 12+ hours then threw a warning light saying battery couldn't hold a charge. I knew this was bollocks as battery in SUV was brand-new. Tried again, with same outcome. Before packing it up and returning, I thought I'd try it on my daily driver that also has a relatively new (6 month's old) battery. Within minutes, it zipped through all the charging progress bars, and registered a 100% charge. Only difference between my daily driver and my SUV is the location of battery posts (SUV's is on the side, not the top). Tried again on the SUV and fiddled around with the alligator clamps to try and attach them as firmly to the battery posts and in as much contact with them as possible. Turned on unit; same 25% charge reading, however, within 5 minutes it proceeded through the various charge stages without erroring out at 100%. I assume it's now working as it should but won't know until the SUV sits for a considerable time and it needs to be jumped or not. So, moral of the story: If the unit doesn't charge and/or throws an error light saying battery won't hold a charge, that may not be the case at all. Manual doesn't say a thing about this possible outcome if the alligator clamps aren't properly positioned just right, particularly on side post batteries, this can be a problem. Issue can probably be avoided if you get the optional eyelet post connectors, but I didn't want to mess with that... ... show more
