🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The reviews generally praise the Ninja FD401 Foodi for its versatility as a grilling, air frying, and compact baking solution, proving especially popular among users living in small spaces or without a traditional oven. Users appreciate this appliance's various functions, and noted that it consistently produced deliciously grilled, air fried, and baked meals. A few mention that the grill feature takes a little longer to preheat but is worth it, and some minor grievances on the cleaning aspect were raised as well.

Pros

  • 🍔 Loved for its versatility (grilling, air frying, compact baking)
  • 🥓 Delivers excellent results, particularly highlighted were steaks, grilled chicken, air fried zucchini, bacon, and potato fries
  • 🏡 Particularly praised by users living in small spaces or without a traditional oven
  • ✨ Several users noted that it was easy to clean

Cons

  • ⏱️ Some users mentioned the grill feature takes longer to preheat than the air fryer function
  • 😥 Cleaning the top proved difficult for some due to its design
  • ❌ Slight issue mentioned with placement of food on grill due to the slope of it (leading to food situated in the grease trap)
  • ⚠️ Users need to be cautious of the cleaning tools used to avoid damaging the surface

Should I Buy It?

Yes, based on the largely positive reviews, the Ninja FD401 Foodi appears to be a fantastic investment for those seeking a versatile cooking solution, particularly for those in smaller living spaces or without a traditional oven. It delivers excellent grilling, air frying, and baking, and also offers convenience in usage and cleaning. Just be mindful that the grill takes a bit more time to heat up and certain cleaning tools can potentially damage the surface.

  • Replaces multiple devices in the kitchen!
I bought this not knowing what to expect, but remained hopeful. I replaced my older toaster oven with this and it actually fits a bit better on my counter top. So far, I have tried grilling and air frying. It performs both tasks very well! I used the included thermometer to grill marinated chicken breasts and they came out beautifully. I did pull my chicken out when they reached 160 degrees Fahrenheit to make sure they did not overcook. Remember, when you pull the meat out of the grill, it will continue to cook internally for a few minutes, even on a plate. Air frying chicken nuggets, fries, fish sticks, etc worked very well. I have yet to try baking and dehydrating but I know it will do well. I haven't tried the griddle yet either but it feels super durable. With the way this thing heats up evenly, I know the griddle will work well. The thermometer seems to be very accurate, but I always double check with an instant read thermometer to be safe. Cleaning the grill is very easy, as long as you remember to clean it after each use. Let the grill cool down then clean the parts with non-abrasive dish cleaning products. I don't care if the manual says you can put the parts in the dishwasher, I never do. I wash the parts by hand and let them dry thoroughly before installing them back in the device. Make sure to wipe down the inside of the hood once it's cooled and it won't get as much buildup. If you're the type to clean maybe once a week, this probably isn't for you. But seriously, it's so easy to clean once it cools down. Just get in the habit of wiping it down and cleaning the parts each time it's used and it will be so much easier to keep up with. It feels very durable, but only time will tell. I got the Assurion warranty on it just in case it dies after the manufacturer's warranty expires. If anything changes and things go sideways, I'll update my review to let everyone know. So far I have zero complaints with it. It heats up fast and food is ready faster than heating up my wall oven. It's a win/win so far! ... show more

  • This Has Renewed My Interest In Cooking
I cannot say enough good things about the Ninja IG651 Foodi Smart XL Pro 7-in-1 Indoor Grill/Griddle Combo. This little gadget has given me a renewed love of cooking. About 3 years ago I purchased a Blackstone Flat Top Griddle, Electric Smoker, and an Oklahoma Joe's Longhorn Combo (offset smoker, charcoal grill, propane grill, all with a side burner too). I liked my outdoor kitchen but soon realized I wasn't using them often as I thought I would due to extreme hot and cold weather temps and the hassle of cleaning up. This is what led to my purchase of the Ninja OG701 7-in-1 Outdoor Electric Grill & Smoker. I enjoyed it so much I decided to buy the Ninja Foodi for indoor cooking. I've had the Ninja Foodi XL 7-in-1 for 2 ½ weeks and used the griddle 3 times, air crisp option 2 times, grill 4 times and broil once. I consider myself to be a good cook. My cooking expertise leans toward Thai, Mexican, and Indian cuisines. However, I tend to get in a hurry when frying over easy eggs and break the yolks. Plus I gave up cooking steaks years ago because I hardly ever can get them Medium Rare. Everything I have made on the Foodi has turned out perfectly. Grilled Salmon and Ribeye Steak were restaurant quality. The slipperiness of the griddle plate makes over easy eggs a breeze with in tact runny yolks. All pancakes were evenly cooked at the same time regardless of where they were on the griddle. Air Crisp zucchini fries and eggplant slices were delightfully crunchy and tasty. The baked (then broiled) meatloaf was slightly crispy on the outside yet moist on the inside. Baked skinless chicken thighs were done to perfection and very juicy. The temperature probe is fairly accurate, though my Thermapen has always been spot on so I tend to use that when cooking something super fussy. When you set a temp and insert the probe, the Ninja shuts off as soon as the programmed temp is reached. It then reminds you to let the food rest. After cooking, comes clean up. Nothing could be easier than cleaning the Ninja Foodi. The grill, griddle, and air crisp basket come clean with a sprayer faucet. Seriously, no wiping or scrubbing - a strong spray removes everything within 15 to 20 seconds. Then a quick wipe with a soapy sponge or dishcloth gets rid of any residual greasiness. I see no reason why I'd run them through the dishwasher. I also remove the splatter screen and wipe both sides with a soapy sponge then rinse under the sprayer - it still looks brand new. The only critique I have is that the included recipe pamphlet seems to have incorrect cook times on many recipes. I've seen other reviews stating the same thing…cook times are too long. I'd suggest always using an instant read thermometer or probe for greater accuracy when cooking. All in all, I'd strongly suggest getting a Ninja grill, or get two like I did. ... show more

  • Easy!
I've been using a different air fryer (I won't name the brand) for over a year. It's the toaster oven style and is nice looking but just never seemed to cook things easily or correct. They would come out with burnt areas or not fully cook the inside. After being a bit fed up and wondering what the hype was around this air fryer with the smart features I dove into review after of review and video after video. After a week of looking at it and all these new competitors, I decided on this one. There are a few very nice features on this that make it "Easy". 1. The non stick coating on the cooking surfaces makes for a super easy clean up. 2. The inside is fairly easy to wipe down after each use. I can't get all the way in the very top of the nooks and crevices so time will tell how that goes. 3. The heated bottom plate and air from the top makes this cook evenly and quickly. 4. The temperature sensor really makes cooking chicken and steaks so easy that I can just walk out of my kitchen and do other things till it beeps at me to flip. EASY! We have used this around 20+ times so far and at this point I am very happy. That doesn't mean it doesn't have a con or two. 1. The tray is slanted to the front to allow the grease to fill up the tray and because the ribs on the grate go in that direction it makes some food want to slide in. I would like to see a cover over that. The cover can have holes and be removable or you could just put the ribs the opposite way and put some channels in them to guide the grease. 2. Time will tell but it's very hard to reach the very top of it. If somehow they could engineer it to remove those pieces or provide a tool to scrub around that area it would be nice. UPDATE 7-22-24 SAD NEWS!! The surface where the buttons are and all the selections is cracking horribly. It's probably a matter of time before it seperates from the rest of the faceplate. It's still cooking as well as it was, but I wish it was a bit easier to clean off around the fan area. ... show more

  • First one lasted 6 years with almost daily usage. Time for an upgrade!
This thing rocks! We owned the first generation of the Foodi, and we used the heck out of it for 6 years so much that the bearings were going out in the fan. Decided for a little upgrade this time to the XL, and man was it worth it! The grill space is larger and can easily fit 4 pieces of chicken on it. Clean up is a breeze. I think everyone that comes over to our house ends up buying one because they see how good this thing really is. ... show more

  • LOVE! versatile for studio cooking; top very hard to clean but otherwise easy!
been using since december 2022- we are two and live in a studio with no oven/stove, and rarely eat out- this pretty much takes care of cooking daily (with induction top and instapot supplementing.) steaks taste like they came from a real grill, husband was impressed and pleased- i never use probe just grill on hi 2-3 minutes, flip for 2-3 minutes, grill turns off but stays hot so i leave mine on a couple more minutes to cook more medium after hubby's medium rare comes off. perfect for grilled chicken breast sandwiches too. love grilled or air fried zucchini. air fryer awesome for crispy bacon, fresh breaded chicken tenderloins, crispy drumsticks instead of wings (let's face it: wings are expensive & drums have more meat!) fries, potato cubes, cauliflower, coconut shrimp and yes even frozen beer-batter fish on a lazy quick dinner night... but my fave is skin on salmon: air fry then peel skin off- put skin back in to air fry a few minutes to crisp for what we dubbed fish bacon- amazing! i don't use a dishwasher (for anything) but ceramic coated grill top and air fry basket super easy to clean with dawn & water when greasy, a quick soak in warm water if something gets burnt on like seasoning, but sometimes a damp dish rag is all that's necessary for a quick wipe down. never use griddle. buying pans to try some baking, and the stacking racks for two personal size pizzas. only reason not 5-star is top is hard to clean: the screen should really span entire top like a previous smaller model, but also a button to fully open hinge on lid to clean would be helpful- an issue that has been mentioned in countless reviews in previous models as well so would be nice if company took notice and made the change. it's easier to clean when warm but hard to time that and once it fully cools impossible to remove the grease stains above. it does take up real estate on our small counter but 100% worth it, i have no place to store it other than counter top but with the weight of it i wouldn't want to be hauling it up and down anyway. i will put this in my travel van or rv in lieu of a oven any day. ... show more

  • A big step up from even the previous model
I have owned the previous top-of-line grill model - the FG551 - for over a year, and that device transformed how I cook more than any other piece of kitchen equipment I've ever come across. It's just so easy to get perfectly consistent results when cooking meats, and when you're done, you can just toss the grate, pan, and screen straight into the dishwasher. It's not a charcoal/hardwood grill but you can get plenty of flavor with rubs and marinades. I stumbled upon this new model on Amazon while looking for a replacement lower pan for my FG551, as I'd used and washed the one that came with it almost every day for a year and it was starting to crack at the corners (still usable though). The big difference is that this new one does not rely solely on heat generated by the air fryer element at the top - the grill grate itself has an integral heating element, and when you install it onto the base, it makes electrical connections with two contacts that supply the current during cooking. I bought one immediately, and it has not disappointed! Compared to the previous model, unsurprisingly, this one cooks faster, which solves a major problem when cooking thicker cuts of meat. Previously, if I were cooking really thick steaks, I wanted to use higher temps to get better browning but couldn't do so because heating by air alone is just too slow. The grill grate is a fairly massive piece of cast iron, and the preheat does get it up to temperature so you can get grill marks/sear, but it can't retain that heat very long because again, air isn't an efficient medium to transfer heat from the air fryer heating element into the grate to keep it hot. So if I ran it on high (500F) like the manual recommends, I would get a crunchy, charred shell around a rare steak; the solution was to reduce temps as far as low (400F), depending on the steak, but the results were never as good as with thinner cuts. This new unit does not suffer that problem because the grate itself is heated from below, and I can now cook everything at higher temps across the board because they cook so much faster, even for really thick cuts or when using marinades that would have burned on the old model. Clean up is similar to the previous model, but you have one less piece to throw in the dishwasher - the heated grill grate replaces a roasting pan and a separate grate that sits inside it. The only issue I have with this new design is that the aluminum grate is not coated in any way on the bottom, leaving an exposed aluminum surface; anyone who has ever put a raw aluminum pan in the dishwasher knows that it will come out with a grey/black oxide layer on the surface, which is not toxic or harmful in any way, but is annoying because it gets on everything it touches. I just hold the grate by the edges, avoiding the bottom surface, and only ever handle it to transfer between the grill and the dishwasher that resides directly below it. Once installed in the base, that surface is not exposed in any way so nothing will come in contact with it. Honestly, small price to pay for how well this device works. Very happy with this new model, and I have retired the old one, which served me well. These are the class of the field when it comes to an indoor grill, and they are great air fryers too. I don't really use griddles so I can't comment on that part, but it is a pretty slick feature on top of everything else this thing can do. ... show more

  • Buy the thing
Im not a paid reviewer though I should with how much I spend between ninja and Amazon. Anyway, youre probably reading through these in a limbo on whether or not to spend this much money on something you can buy cheaper but for outside. Wrong! I have a $900 Blackstone combo and flat top air fryer combo but this little bad boy....its in a class of its own and much preferred over my outdoor grills. Is it smaller? Yes. But does it consistently put out perfect chicken, steak, chops on and on? Yes!!! Easy clean up? YES! You will not regret this buy. Thank me later. My free cooking lesson is to start cooking on a lower temp than your book suggest amd go from them. Easier to heat up a grill versus lower the temp mid cook. ... show more

  • Excellent multi-function cooking appliance.
I have begun eating ketovore and am consuming primarily meat, especially beef. I like my steaks rare and burgers medium rare, but both with a good sear. Complicate those cooking goals with an amazing amount of rain, often at dinner time, and outdoor grilling is usually not possible. I can get a good sear in a hot cast iron pan, but there is a lot of spatter and fine grease spray. The air fryer contains most of the spray but it's hard to judge internal temps and monitor overall searing. Enter the Ninja XL PRO GRILL. So far I have seared sirloin steaks that had been cooked to a 129 degree temp (sous vide) and refrigerated. Amazing sear and great flavor, without using the included thermometer. Next were 2 packs of brats on the grill pan. The ten big brats just fit on the pan with really no space between them. Great grill marks and excellent internal cooking in less time than partially steaming in a skillet followed by frying to finish cooking and to brown the exterior. Well, slightly burn the exteriors while getting the inside to temp. That was not a problem in the Ninja. Took less time, and with the lid closed no greasy spatter. Plus the brats were far juicier than cooked in skillet. I am beyond impressed with this multi-function appliance. It is about 17.5" wide so it's not small, but not overly large either. It has 7 different functions and will most likely be used for the bulk of my upcoming cooking adventures. Sausage patties on the included griddle this morning and keto chicken tenders next! Look at this product on Amazon and check out their video reviews as well as YouTube reviews and demos of some cooking techniques. While you would expect a grill from the name it can also roast, bake as well as several other cooking functions. The Ninja XL Pro 7-in-1 grill is well worth the money and counter space. ... show more
