It's been a long time since I had a metal detector. When I was a kid I loved exploring around the park or the beach for random treasures. My daughter is a scout and I thought this would be a great thing for her to take along hiking just for fun. The positives: Very lightweight and comfortable. If you're an adult and you want to use it, you'll probably be stooping over a bit even at the maximum extension, but for a child 5'5" and under, it's perfect. It's very simple to use, with just a singular knob to control the volume. It's pretty sturdy and has a submersible head, which is great for streams and along the beach. The Negatives: While it is compactable to fit in a backpack, it is a little annoying with the metal push pins. Not really a big deal at this price but the indicator is just a single beep when it detects metal and not a wave frequency. This isn't a huge thing, but does make it a tiny bit harder to pin point objects. Overall this is a great little metal detector and is perfect for kids or even hobbyist who wants a simple to use and easy to transport detector. ... show more

We had another kids’ metal detector and it was pretty junky. The construction was just too cheap, the plastic was weak. I don’t believe that by calling it a kids’ toy it should be a license to make it poorly constructed and ready to fall apart. Afterall, kids probably handle things rougher than an adult, so it needs to be built to stand up to that. I have to say this metal detector is better than most. It is still plastic, but it is good construction. I would call it a smaller version of a beginner’s metal detector. It is not simply a piece of plastic junk that is destined for the trash can quickly. It certainly identifies metal objects too. The audible alert really makes it clear and easy. Having a display would be a bonus, but no matter your age, finding the “treasure” is simple and fun. I like the way it folds up into a small and easy to carry size so you can take it on the go without fear of it getting broken. But, it is a little tricky breaking down the first connection. It is best done with two people. On person to push in the two button balls and one to gently pull it apart. I have done it by myself, but with two screwdrivers to push the ball buttons and then grabbing the detector with my knees. For the price or almost $50, I’d hope you could pull it out of the box and have it ready to go however it does need 9V battery that is not included. Otherwise it is lightweight and a bit smaller than expected but convenient for bring-along. It’s very sturdy although plastic. It’s built well for what it’s meant for and looks sleek. I appreciate that it’s water resistant so that the kiddo can have fun even in rain when outside. It’s simple to use and perfect for a beginner. So much fun searching for hidden treasures or anywhere on a trip. This metal detector is very giftable and will make any child happy. Highly recommend! What a great little set for those youngsters that like to explore the outdoors. The metal detector is light and easy to use. The adjustability makes it a good fit for most kids. This metal detector is best suited for something like beach vacations and scavenging metal objects that aren't buried too deep. If you're like I am...and have some...sciency and outdoorsy...type kids...this will do the trick. It's a very reasonable price for what you're getting. To do: Throw out some coins...or hide a few things to get the excite meter started To don't: Expect to find Civil War artifacts with this...or...maybe do? ... show more

    • Fun for kids.
The grandkids are having fun with this little metal detector trying to find treasures all over the place. It seems to work pretty well for fun. I don't know that it will find anything buried deep or any treasures, but they've found some coins and are having a good time with it.

My soon to be 11-year-old has always been interested in metal detectors. One of his hobbies with his best friend is doing yard and road clean up (I know!!!) and picking up all sorts of interesting bits (and of course, trash, too). We live near an aluminum plant, so there is always bits of metal just laying on the side of the road. He was super excited to open this up. He saw it was here after school and immediately put it together and went out into the yard to find things. He did need a little bit of help putting it together (he didn't know how to get the poles together and how to properly adjust them). He practiced on the way out of the house on the fridge, washer, dryer, etc. to know how it works. This is very easy to use - it has an on/off knob that controls the volume. There is nothing to change the sensitivity... no screen... just on/off + volume knob. Our yard was beeping a lot. He couldn't always find the object that was making it go off, but he always found something when he dug around (one thing was a huge piece of glass which definitely shouldn't have made it go off...) He said he did dig down a few inches, but I didn't go out to verify. He plans to take it with us to the beach. Hopefully he gets some good finds! ... show more

The media could not be loaded. We have a pair of curious boys, 7 and 3 years old. They always needed novel toys and challenges to play with. I got this for them to discover things near the house. Assembly was very easy, and just add a 9V battery (same as those used in smoke detectors), and the device is ready to run. It is not just a toy when used as the metal detector. The boy tried it in our front yard, and he did survey some areas and found two pieces of metal under the dirty and mushes. The volume of the beep could be adjusted, the detector could be turned on and off of course, all from turning the same blue knob. Now the boys would like to take it to beach to discover more values metals such as a toy car next time we go to Santa Cruz. ... show more
