It does get very hot and fast but it uses more wattage than it says. And it takes forever to cool off. So I have put it away until it's very cold outside and I have a fully charged battery in my RV.

I’ve been looking for a long time for a small hot plate that uses about 500-800W that is able to BOIL water (not just warm it). Most hot plates (single burner) uses up to 1000-1200w. I wanted to use it primarily with my solar generator; so, 1000-1200w sucks up quite a bit of energy. This hot plate is awesome! It BOILS 2 -3 cups of water in 5 MINUTES (I timed it), and actually only uses 480w. The initial surge doesn’t even hit 500w. ** to note, I use an aluminum coffee pot to boil the water. From my experience, it gets hot faster than stainless steel. So, depending on what material is used, the boil time may differ ** Regardless, it does get hot fast! After I boil the water, the plate remains hot enough for me to cook regular oatmeal. ** you must follow the directions. Heat it up initially at high for about 10-15 minutes outside to burn off the coating on the plate. After the initial burn, there is absolutely no smell ** This is such a wonderful find that I even bought another one. The reviewers who complain about the size are unrealistic. It is made to be a small hot plate that uses only 500w! So, they are getting exactly what they bought. Also, many of them who complain about the smell clearly didn’t follow the instructions. ... show more

    • Good for keeping things hot
Bought this to keep coffee, soup, food warm or hot. Works well for that. You could cook on it with a small pot or pan, but a larger unit would be better for that. Con: Even after using for 4 month, it still has a smell to it when you turn it on. Typical of many products made in China.

    • Does what I wanted perfectly, cheap construction
I like that it works perfectly for the purpose I purchased: to heat my stove top Moka Pot. The dial to select the heat setting is cheap and feels a little off, like tilted a little? It may not have been assembled properly, and the action isn't smooth. But it's made in China .. so .. but I would buy again if needed. Hate buying things made in the PRC but it's hard to find any electronics that aren't. ... show more

    • Great little hot plate that will not blow any breakers.
First, understand that you must burn off residual stuff from manufacturing. I left this outside at full high heat for an hour. Second, It is only 400 watts so you are not going to sear any large steaks on this. 90 percent of normal cooking does not need any more heat than 400 watts. This saves space in my tiny RV with limited power and storage. It fits my tiny kettle because I never need more than 1 liter/quart of hot water at a time. Takes less than 10 minutes to heat up to 60 degrees C, 140 F. It also works with my huge 3 or 4 liter stainless cooking pot as a slow cooker set up. It only needs to be set at "3" heat settings. This saves a ton of propane. It does not transfer any heat to the counter top. It looks like it was designed with vents to carry heat out of the unit. No other hot plate I have has any vents for the body. But out of habit, I place it on a ceramic tile anyway as it bridges the spaces on my stove top to support this. This will work with my 1,000 watt inverter generator and still allow me to charge my bicycle and RV batteries. A great little unit for anyone downsizing their life. ... show more

Run it on level 5 for 10 minutes before you use it. This thing is pumping out the heat. At the 5th level it surpassed 750° and overloaded my detector. Keep in mind while the plate gets super hot it doesn't transfer heat 100% (nothing does) so you're looking to get to a slow boil around level 3 and will boil off the water at level 5. For the stoners out there, you barely need level 3 to get it high enough, but keep it under 420° (magic number for a reason) and don't burn your house down, please. ... show more

It heats up around the perimeter not only on the heat pad so you may see tarnishing with time around the perimeter. It heats well and for low to medium high heat cooking it functions great. It's already traveled with me to make scramble eggs, toast, and French toast. I use it with a 5" & 7" frying pan w/ covers. Work excellently. ... show more
