This is just what I was looking for. Nice size. Fits nicely in the car. The door is a little tricky. If you move the lever the wrong way the door falls off. Easy to mark with a sharpy pen to show direction. Otherwise, it's great.

UPDATE #2: For the very first trip in the car, I attached a shoulder strap to the gray plastic shoulder strap loops. These loops are NOT SAFE to use. As soon as I put the strap over my shoulder one of the plastic loops popped out of its seating and flew across the room. Fortunately I had my hand on the handle so my 13 lb. cat didn’t fall to the ground but these loops are completely unsafe. Since I still want to be able to use a shoulder strap, I removed the plastic loops and attached paracord with a double fisherman’s knot to serve as the shoulder strap attachment (photo attached). Overall this is still a good carrier (and the lightest hard sided carrier available), but there are some precautions that need to be taken until the manufacturer makes improvements. UPDATE #1: While attaching the metal gate, a sharp edge stabbed my hand and drew blood. There was a dot of welding material at the edge of the vertical bar so sharp it could be a hypodermic needle (photo attached). I checked the rest of gate and found a couple of other sharp edges too. I’d say there are some quality control problems. I contacted the manufacturer who was very helpful and after sending them photos of the problem they quickly sent me a replacement gate which has no sharp edges. ——- I’ve searched EVERYWHERE for a well made hard sided carrier that weighs less than 5lbs. My cat is heavy enough to carry all by himself and I don’t want a carrier that will add 8lbs or more to him. It seemed an impossible task and I’ve bought and returned so many carriers. I had kept my eye on the Spree because it’s so lightweight but was worried about some of the negative reviews and also the lack of real detail about how it fits together. A carrier that just snaps together without screws or even clamps seemed risky. Even the manufacturer’s website doesn’t give much detail on how the top and bottom stay together. I’m very happy I bought this! Assembly was super easy even without good instructions (it comes with very basic instructions on the label but check out the manufacturer’s website for a video) and all the parts appear very well made. It turns out the top and bottom attach with hooks and the front knob pieces hold the hooks in a locked position. The levers that hold the gate in place have a groove they snap into to stay secure, and even the loops for attaching a shoulder strap (not included) look much stronger than they seem in photos. All around it looks very sturdy. I’ll update my review after a few trips in the car. ... show more

    • Great cat carrier for a great price!

We bought this carrier 5 1/2 years ago, and it has held up nicely. Of the carriers we've bought over the years, this one has been the best. It's not fancy, but it works well for us. We use it for our cats, the largest of which is about 12 pounds in size. The size is just right for them. They all still have their claws, but they can't claw their way out of this carrier. We usually place a towel in the bottom to help with any mishaps. There's plenty of ventilation. It's easy to clean with Lysol wipes, or soapy water, a rag and a water hose. None of our cats has ever gotten out of the carrier on his/her own, so I feel like it's very safe. Plus, our cats feel safe in it. If we leave it in the house with the door open, one of the cats will stroll into the carrier for a nap. I highly recommend this carrier. ... show more

About a week ago we adopted a stray. We needed to get a new carrier though, our old one is way too big for a single, small cat, so I bought this one to use when we took him to his neutering appointment. I put him in it when it arrived to see how he would handle it, and he broke out of it within a few minutes. He stuck his paws under the door to get some leverage and pushed his head against the door to pop the door open, despite the fact that I had the door closed and locked. Our little Houdini here isn't all that big - the vet estimated he's about 8-12 months old, and weighed a little over 7 lbs when we brought him in. The locks themselves spin into position, inserting 2 from the top and 2 from the bottom, each having a flared base that's supposed to keep it in place. Somehow when he popped the door open, he managed to dislodge the top lock itself. I thought maybe I just didn't have it all the way in place or something, so I made sure to push it all the way in and it seemed secure...until he was taken to the clinic this morning for his appointment, where he managed to bust out again - this time in the car. Fortunately I placed the carrier in such a way that he was unable to open the door all the way to get out, and there was more than one person in the car. All said, this carrier might work fine for small cats that are docile enough to not attempt an escape, but if you have a bigger, stronger companion, or one that is a known escape artist, I suggest looking elsewhere for something sturdier. ... show more

I unfortunately was stupid enough to buy two (2) of these so-called CAT/DOG carriers. Please pay heed to the negative reviews on this item; I should have done this myself! Customers should know that this cat/dog carrier is WAY too flimsy to safely hold your beloved pets unless your pets are super teeny tiny. DO NOT BUY THESE CARRIERS unless your pet weighs less than 2 lbs. There is NO WAY I would put a full grown cat into this flimsy cheap-o plastic container that's held together with cheap-o plastic parts. The flimsy HANDLE is especially scary! This is NOT hard-sided. It's cheap plastic; the kind of plastic that quickly deteriorates if left in the sunshine, and becomes brittle and breaks. It's Dollar Store quality, only worse. I attempted to use Amazon's so-called "customer service" link to return these for a refund, but this is like pulling teeth. Good luck if you try to return these! The manufacturer, Mid-West Homes for Pets, will only tell you to "call Amazon customer service" for a refund. My advice is JUST DO NOT BUY THESE PET CARRIERS. Now I'm stuck with these, so I'm going to reinforce the flimsy parts with HIGH QUALITY DUCT TAPE and possibly bungee cords, if necessary. I only bought them in case we need to evacuate during a forest fire, so let's hope I can rig them to work until I can find something better. You get what you pay for, and these were indeed cheap. MY BAD!! Now I feel like a rotten cat parent for ordering these and putting my fur babies at risk! UPDATE: So, after using a whole roll of Gorilla Tape on these cheapo carriers, I decided that NOTHING is going to make them safe, so I decided to use them as EMERGENCY LITTER BOXES instead! I live in forest fire country; we may have to evacuate during a fire so I need STURDY cat carriers, which I will now buy in an actual brick and mortar store so I can inspect the quality before buying. If we have to evacuate, I'm going to need portable litter boxes too, right? So these pieces of junk will suffice for that I guess. The doors are worthless, the plastic is cheap, the handle is flimsy, but this container would indeed work as an emergency litter box (without the door on it) I do believe. If you've ever stayed in motel rooms with cats, you know you need a litter box! Just keep this thing sitting on the FLOOR because if you pick it up with cat litter in it, the bottom will fall off.
