  • The best of three microscopes compared.
Three kids microscopes compared. 1) AmScope 120X-1200X 52-pcs Kids Beginner Microscope 2) Swift Compound Monocular Microscope 60X-200X 3) EMARTH Microscope for Kids Beginners Children Student, 40X- 1000X Note: The prices of these microscopes vary from time to time. When I purchased them they were all within about a $20 price range. Amscope: This microscope is basically useless. The optics are terrible. Even on the lowest magnification level nothing interesting can be distinguished. At the highest mag you will be lucky if you can even find the "focal" plane. It also lacks a "light from above". That would be a useful feature for an inquisitive child. It does have two things going for it: It comes with a case, and the frame of the microscope is made of metal. Both of the other two microscopes have plastic frames and neither comes with a case. It is also the cheapest of the three, but saving $20 and getting a worthless microscope doesn't really seem like a great deal. Swift: Nice bright and large field of view. Best of the three in these regards. But the magnifications does not go that high. Smaller details are visible on the EMARTH. Theoretically they would be visible on the AmScope if the image quality was anything better than terrible. Lights both above and below the sample. Intensities are independently adjustable (nice). The stage on this scope is more difficult to adjust. Get the image in focus and let go of the knob and the stage "relaxes" to a new position, and the image goes out of focus. A bit of tweaking will get a focused image, but shouldn't be necessary, and may frustrate a child. I am unsure of the total magnifications of the Swift. The objectives are labeled 60X, 120X, and 200X. Actual magnifications seem higher, although not nearly as high as the other two. I can see an argument being made that this microscope is the best of the three.because of the larger and brighter field of view, but the highest magnification level on the Swift is not enough. Frame is plastic. No case. EMARTH: Reasonably bright images. Decent sized field of view. The objective lens housings are made of metal - the other two have plastic lens housings. This microscope also come with two eye pieces, one 10X and the other 25X. Very quick to swap them for a different view. Switch for (1) Light from below, (2) Light from above, (3) Both. Intensity is adjustable, but not independently Above/Below. Frame is plastic. No case. Instructions say to "Use the dust cover provided by the microscope manufacturer...." to protect the eye piece, but no dust cover was included. This is the best of the three. Even at the highest magnification level the image is clear and bright enough. It is also the most expensive of the three. ... show more

  • Good bargain and starter microscope
This is good starter microscope. I used to work on scopes all day long at a previous job, and this is nowhere near commercial grade. However, my 8 year old is able to use this for absolutely everything he can possibly want to do (and possibly will last until he decides to upgrade later in middle or high school). One thing I love most about this scope is, of course the up to 1000x zoom, allowing you to see quite a lot of detail, though the lenses aren't as top-notch and clear as lab-quality ones. My son is still a beginner and wants to be able to pull a leaf off the tree and start looking at it right away, and so this will suffice. The focus is decently good and better than several other beginner scopes. ... show more

  • Awesome!
I bought this for my 11 year old girl, and she loved it! As soon as I got the notification that it’s delivered, she ran outside to get it! In fact, she was so excited, she didn’t even read the instructions and just jumped right in and started exploring it! Overall, this is the best microscope I bought for her. It’s super easy to use, and very sleek. Whenever I buy something new for my daughter such as a coloring book or a new pack of bracelet beads, she plays with them for a couple of days but she has been using this one for over a week! I love seeing her play with it and find thing in our backyard to examine! I love how it also comes with little samples to look at up close, like a piece of onion and a dragonfly wing! I love this product and everything about it, and I plan buying it again for my nieces and nephews! It comes with so much, like a test tube and a pipette, and I adore it! ... show more

  • FUN & EDUCATIONAL
I bought this as a Christmas present for a six-year old grandson. He has enjoyed using it so much! We had to find dead bugs (middle of winter in Iowa), and look at their body parts. This microscope magnifies so well that we could see the individual hairs on a fly's leg. It also came with its own set of slides, ready for viewing right away. The adults enjoyed it as much as the grandson did! Buy this for your budding curious little scientist!! ... show more

  • Fun expensive toy for elementary age students .
I bought this microscope to replace a inexpensive toy one that I had gifted to my young elementary age home schooled granddaughter. It did take her mom a while to figure out how to set this up for viewing. Once set and granddaughter was able to see a prepared slide the delight on her face was worth the price to me . It would be nice if it came in a case to store. Thought it was odd that it was shipped just in its own box and not within an Amazon box . We will have fun with this as she loves insects and all of nature . ... show more

  • Wonderful Christmas gift
This was a Christmas gift for a 10 year old girl. Her Aunt is a scientist and she wanted her own microscope. She has used hers everyday since receiving it --- making slides of all kinds, etc.
