And when we unboxed it and went out to the back yard to start exploring, it's exactly how he felt. Like Indiana Jones. This metal detector from Avid looks and feels just like a grown-up one, but it's sized for kids. It really works! We didn't strike it rich (yet) but found lots of little pieces of metal that might as well have been solid gold, to my kids. They wanted to donate them to the museum ASAP. So yes, this is a good thing to buy if your kids are adventurers like mine.

This thing broke on my first trip out!! The arm guard broke right off, it’s just made of thin plastic. Worse than that, the unit signals a hit every time you bump the head up against a stick or anything. I’ve placed targets in the ground and this thing can find surface level iron. Yet it marks all over at times for absolutely nothing. The allure of a cheap detector is to find parts lost in the weeds working on equipment, believe me, this thing is junk. Spend a bit more for a better unit and save yourself the time and headaches. Update: Avid’s customer service reached out to me and were very understanding of the problems I had. With a few short emails they refunded my entire purchase. Even though this doesn’t change the product, it was great to have a company reach out to me and I was very impressed with how they handled it. Thank you Avid Power.

This was a Christmas present for my grandson. He was ecstatic when he saw it Christmas Day. It's the perfect size for him, and once the spring comes he will be right out there using it. It seemed like the quality of it is good, too, because kids can be kind of rough on things. It should hold up well. Delivery was in a timely manner.

It is accurate, but I cannot find a way to set it just to what I want. I thought I understand the description to say that you could adjust it to only seek out precious metals? You have to take it apart to store it in its bag as well, which is time consuming. But most are like that. Then you have to put it back together to use it again. That is prob a safety feature to keep it from getting broken into, in the shaft area, so I shouldn't complain.

Easy to use. My 6-yr-old son loved it and found all sorts of fun treasures. The downside was that the battery clip broke off the second time he changed the battery. Luckily my husband is handy and has a replacement piece, but not everyone can do that!
