  • Lived up to expectations
Style: Metabo HPT EC710S Air Compressor
I researched all other pancake compressors and this one had the best stats of them all for what I was looking for. I wanted the most capability for the lowest noise and this one fits the bill. Pros - CFM: Nearly all other pancakes have a 2.6 CFM, and this one is 2.8. The only one with better CFM is Harbor Freight's Fortress which is 3.0 CFM - Noise: This is the quietest Pankcake on the market at 73 dB whereas most competitors are in the 80+ range. Every 10 dB means 2x as loud. So on average, nearly every other air compressor is almost 2x as loud. - PSI: This is 150 PSI, as are most other pancakes out there. The only two with higher PSI are Dewalt's and the HB Fortress at 165 and 175 PSI respectively. To me, this wasn't a big deal since those compressors need to run longer to get to 165 and 175 PSI. It is exponentially harder to get to a higher air compression, which means extra run time, and extra wear and tear on the motor. This compressor kicks on around 110-120 PSI and that's plenty for the tools I run. - Rubber feet: They are nice, soft, and spongey. They provide excellent grip and help protect against jarring vibrations. I'm actually impressed. Not sure how this compares against others, but was something I was happy with. - Comfortable carrying handle Cons (I knew both of these prior to purchase): - Gauges. I dislike how the gauges are not side by side. The air pressure gauge is not possible for me to read while standing up. I have to bend over and tilt the compressor to read it. They should design it like the Ridgid Pancake where it is easy to read both gauges while standing up. - Weight. Heavier than most other pancakes by 1-5lb depending. Still quite manageable for me to move around with one arm. Strong competitors in my mind were the Fortress (3.0 CFM, 175 PSI, 81 dB), the Dewalt (2.6 CFM, 165 PSI, 78.5 dB), and the Rigid (2.6 CFM, 150 PSI, 80 dB). For me: - Fortress had amazing specs, but way too loud at 81 dB - DeWalt secretly switched their model out a few years ago, but kept the exact same model number. Almost all website listings include the specs from the old model, not the new one. The new model is worse in EVERY way. It's louder (78.5 dB instead of 75.5 dB), and the took away the gauge for the regulator and replaced it with a cheap looking plastic regulator. Also the reviews were poor. I was very disappointed by this and thought the old switcheroo was unprofessional and misleading. - Rigid was the best of the "regular generic" pancakes as it had a 3 year warranty and the good design (gauges are easy to see). But I wanted more CFM and quieter which the Metabo gives. Regarding Metabo noise: It is still loud, but far less loud than my previous air compressor which was horrible to be around. While loud, it's managable and not horrible. I couldn't imagine getting an 80 dB air compressor if you want your sanity while using it indoors. I'm happy with the noise. I think some people who are disappointed by the noise don't know how loud other compressors are and have wrong expectations. It is not quite. But it knocks the noise down from almost unbearable and run the opposite direction to loud but you don't need to run away (I'm talking indoor use here). So it achieved the goals I had in mind, with the only substantial compromise being the annoying gauge design, but still far better than the DeWalt gauges. ... show more

  • Excellent, so far.
Style: Metabo HPT EC710S Air Compressor
I just received this a few days ago so this is not a review of long-term reliability. The compressor is solid and appears well-constructed, better than the Porter-Cable 2002 it replaces. Compressors are noisy, but this is less so than the P-C, and vibrates much less. The P-C moved all over our smooth garage floor when running; this one doesn't move at all. The Metabo HPT runs for 3:06 from empty before it shuts off at 145 PSI, according the gauge. It restarts when the pressure drops to 115-120 PSI and runs for 43 seconds till full again. I could not detect any leaks and there was no pressure drop over the 6 hours I left it full. The compressor drove 24 16g x 2 1/2 finishing nails (100 PSI) before it restarted. It is 6-7 pounds heavier than the P-C, at 36.5 lbs. The tank valve at the bottom is a 90 degree turn brass stopcock valve. Much better than the steel twist-type valve on the P-C, which eventually rusted internally and then could not be opened at all. I will add an update if needed. Addendum: 9/6/2021. Continues to work well with light duty use. Recent reviewers complain that it is noisy. Yes, but I think these reviewers are being unrealistic. However, the company markets it as quiet and it is not. So bad on Metabo HPT too. For me, the noise level is acceptable, but for those who disagree there are easy ways to mitigate it's impact. Other brands of this same type are probably just as loud or louder. My Porter-Cable was certainly louder and harsher. And when I look at different brands of 6 gallon pancakes, eg P-C, Bostitch, Craftsman, etc, they all look the same. Just spray painted different colors and different company decals. I bet they are otherwise identical, and just as loud. I note that the cost is now much higher. I paid $119 for mine. Now is $179. I realize others may be more price-sensitive, but I think it is still a good value. I wish it were built in the USA, but I can't control that. Otherwise I don't care where it was built as long as it works. This one does. My rating stays 5 stars. ... show more

  • A bit loud but that's OK!
Style: Metabo HPT EC710S Air Compressor
I received my order safe and sound, no damage anywhere on the box and inside as well. Sturdy and stout air compressor. I recommend wearing eyes and ear protection as you'll be working with a loud machine putting out pressured air. I initially wanted to get the Metabo Tank but my budget was a bit tight, so it remains in my wish list for now. BUT! I am not disappointed at all by this one. I've used it to power my nail gun pusher, brad nail gun, and as a blower to clean when I make a dusty mess. More than adequate for these type of work. It's definitely a must have for light-medium duty projects and you won't be disappointed! Price: Excellent at the time Performance: Excellent, pressure goes up fast! Noise is indeed loud but that is expected. Quality & Durability: Initial impressions are excellent, I don't see anything cheaped out but I won't be opening this new unit to inspect. It has been performing great without issues over the past few weeks. Dislikes: I wish both gauges were mounted on top for easy viewing. Likes: I like how compact it is and has two outputs so you can run two items. Everything on it is intuitive to use and I like that very much about it. Okay, hope this review helped! Have fun and be safe! ... show more

  • Powerful, portable 150PSI
Style: Metabo HPT EC710S Air Compressor
This air compressor is very nice, good quality and can reach 150PSI- which was important specification to me. At this price point I could not find a better value with this pressure and air volume combination. This compressor works well, but I have only had it for 1 month. My only wish is that the tank volume was greater- Im used to working with 30-50gal air compressors/tanks and you can use a lot of air before that unit 'auto-starts.' I do recommend this air compressor because of features and cost. ... show more
