  • Quieter, but not quiet
Style: Steel Pattern Name: Air Compressor
The media could not be loaded. Compared to my old pancake compressor, the 8010 is definitely quieter, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it quiet; and definitely not 'ultra quiet'. Some people here make it sound (pun intended) as if this thing operates whisper quiet. It isn't. The video by the manufacturer also makes it seem much quieter than it is. I am attaching a comparison video taken with a TASCAM DR-40 audio recorder set to a fixed audio gain. Compare this to the manufacturer's video. Using a dB meter on my phone held at ear height above the machine, I measure 55-60 dB; that's within spec unless the 60 dB the manufacturer quotes is supposed to be measured right next to the motor; in that case, I measure 70 dB. The pancake compressor measures 75 dB at the same distance above ground, which is, of course, a lot noisier. So far, the compressor seems to hold air pretty well. Then again, so did the pancake compressor initially before it developed a mystery leak, time will tell. The box arrived in one piece with no apparent damage or faulty welds. Compared to a standard pancake, the air throughput is slightly less, 2.2 CFM at 90psi compared to 2.6 CFM at 90psi for the pancake. It might have made sense to order a larger model, but the price was definitely right. Portability is pretty good with the wheels and the fairly low weight. Since the main reason for getting this compressor was to reduce the highly annoying noise of the pancake, I am not 100% satisfied with the performance of the 8010 and feel that either the tool I have is noisier than what is being reported by others, or people are exaggerating the absence of noise to a significant degree. ... show more

  • Smoke, heat and a burned motor.
Style: Steel Pattern Name: Air Compressor
Yep, happened to mine, opened the garage door and it's filled with smoke with a burning smell. This compressor has a serious issue if left on. A regular compressor you can leave plugged in and turned up and the motor will kick in when more pressure is needed. The motor on this one will get really hot even when not in use, left it on overnight and filled my garage with smoke, the motor was so hot it burned the stickers right off. Buyer beware! ... show more

  • No Quality Control - Buy with Caution
Style: Aluminum Pattern Name: Air Compressor
Seemed like a great product. Arrived intact, assembled it, and powered it up. Flicked the switch and the first thought was "WOW! This thing is amazingly quiet!". I decided to shut it down before fully charging it, and immediately noticed it was leaking - like leaking so badly that the hissing sound coming from it was as loud as it was when it was running. Clearly they don't test these after assembly, because this unit would have been obviously faulty. So... go to Amazon to start trying to get help. They direct me to CAT for support. CAT support offers to let me troubleshoot the compressor, and they will send me replacement parts. For me, that is extremely lame. They want ME to troubleshoot their crap product - for no pay? I don't work for them. They don't pay me to be a depot-level repair facility, and I paid for a NEW unit - not a DIY compressor kit. So, I go back to Amazon to get a return/replacement - since CAT was not going to help. Amazon is now out of stock, and the only seller is charging $150 more than what I paid for the unit. Amazon encourages me to return the compressor, and get a credit towards the new purchase - which would cost me $150 more. So, Amazon Customer Service is out of their minds as well. Finally get someone who tells me to wait until they are back in stock - and they will send me a new one, and pick up the old broken one. What a pain. So frustrating. I hope that the replacement works well - I was really looking forward to having a nice quiet air supply - instead I have gotten the runaround from everyone involved... I fully expect that a good unit will be amazing, just hoping it's not months before I can get one... ... show more

  • Great product. I wish I had bought this many ...
Style: Steel Pattern Name: Air Compressor
Great product. I wish I had bought this many years ago. I will list some pros and cons; Pros: This thing is quiet. And I mean quiet. I had a 33 gallon Craftsman that was an absolute monster when it was on. Hearing protection was a must if I was standing next to it while it was filling up. This little California Air Tool compressor is an absolute dream. I am still in awe when it fills up. As for filling up, not bad at all. Takes next to no time to fill up the 8 gallon tank to pressure. I mainly use it for blowing out my lawn tractor air filter and topping off my tires now. I have used it once for a brad nailer and had no problems with maintaining pressure. Would I use it for an air chisel or air drill, probably not. Minor assembly is required out of the box. Pretty easy to put the wheels and air filter on. The fittings are tight. I filled tank to pressure and it has held constant pressure with no leakage yet. Cons: You can tell from the git go that this is a made in china product. It's the little things that really count. The weld seams around the tank look like they were done by a 3 year old. The mount for the rubber stop was welded off canter from the tank and the weld, even though it is holding well and does not seem to affect the quality of the product, is poorly done. The nice silver paint does seem to hide these imperfections, but I can only imagine the majority of the cost of this compressor is probably in the two stage pump and motor. That is fine as like I have just mentioned, this thing is one quiet air sucker. Overall rating of this product is a 5 so far. I will overlook the shoddy welding and rate this thing on performance. As of yet, it has surpassed my expectations. ... show more
