  • Pretty Solid Product!
Color: MeatStick X Set (500ft+ Range)
I tested this out a few times on steak and other things. Generally, it is pretty solid. Easy to handle. And my steaks have been coming out just about right. The design is sleek and I love how there is a magnet on the base which allows me to stick it to my frig. But you do have to be careful, the stick gets pretty hot and you should always use gloves or something when you are pulling it out. I have been using in a combination of using an insta-grill. A few tips I figured out. 1. Be careful about how much ambient heat you have, that will affect how much time or how early you have to pull out your meat. 2. Use a glove or cloth when you pull it out of the meat so that you don't get burned. 3. Don't wash it right away or put it in water. Instead, let it cool down before cleaning it. (metal hitting something cold will warp the metal) 4. If you are using an insta-grill have your alarm happen at 15 degrees lower than your target temp. 5. Get yourself some rechargeable batteries. If you don't already have any. It is just good to have for this and other gadgets around the house. As an engineer, I am always looking at how to improve something. And I got some suggestions for the makers. 1. It would be good to have a visual indicator on the stick that can tell you if it is still "hot". Probably not possible since LED will melt in the heat. Other than maybe heat color changing material? 2. Make the base rechargeable, we are kind of in that age where everything is rechargeable using micro USB or USB C. 3. Make the app smarter, instead of having hard-coded temperature alarms and such. Make it more dynamic. You can detect the ambient heat and internal heat. You can calculate how/when to take out the steak in order to take into account, residual heat, and how that is affected by the ambient heat. If the ambient heat is 200, then you can take it out at 130 (target 135). But if it is 500, you should probably be taking it out at 120 (target 135). 4. Also, I understand why you need to have more permissions on the app, but try to start reducing the number of permissions and battery usage on the app. ... show more

  • Updated review after receiving replacement
Color: Xtender Set (Red) (300ft Range)
I originally left a one star review based on having a bad experience with a unit that completely failed to work after a half dozen uses and was out of my return window. I believe this to be a defective unit as it was basically brand new and was unable to ever connect to the app again after only a few uses. I have to say that this company did the right thing and reached out to me to offer a replacement which was also a newer and improved 4x version. Of course I accepted and am glad I did because the new version works seamlessly. I have no issues connecting the stick to the app and it works so much better. My original one (red version) had an extender which is no longer needed with the 4x. It also has multiple temp sensors in the stick allowing you to get more accurate temps from the surface to the center. I think my original version just needed some bugs worked out like any first versions. This company and product absolutely deserves 5 stars for not only the improved product but the excellent customer service. No company has ever offered a replacement outside of return/warranty window. I’m very happy with my meat stick finally and will absolutely recommend it to others. Well worth the price for what you get. ... show more

  • Great concept, terrible execution.
Let me start off by saying this is a great concept IF the product worked as marketed. I'm a tech person, the app is super buggy and the Bluetooth connections are sub par, probes do not like to connect or stay connected even with the wireless extension. Gave it a shot on 2 cooks, both low temp under 275. Both times it took 30+ minutes to get the probes to actually show up on the app to start a cook. Both times I actually deleted the app and reinstalled to get the probe to show up. 1st cook. After charging the probes for 12 hours, went to update firmware. 30 minutes of troubleshooting connection issues I got the large probe ready for a tri tip in the oven at 275. 1st off the bat ambient readings were at 300+ which was odd. Pulled the meat at 125 and got ready to sear. Just checking with the thermoworks pen which is very accurate. It probed 115, meh 10 degrees I'll let it slide. Let it hang out in the oven a bit longer and then seared. Cook 2. I did a wagyu Brisket over the weekend and got some wildly inaccurate temperatures. Now i bought this for convenience and cloud connectivity. Also so I could get some naps in while smoking a Brisket overnight. Smoking at 250 acccording to dome of big green egg. Keep in mind the big green egg is a ceramic cooker, literally holds temperatures perfectly. Meatstick was all over the place registering ambient temps from 225-350. Being nervous about the temp alarms, checked my trusty thermoworks, grate was right at 260 holding steady. Still wanting to give this thing a chance I continued on cooking. Alarms kept going off and ambient temps were going from 225-350. No sleep for me. When spritzing, Meatstick readings on brisket temp on flat and point were about 15-20 degrees higher and lower than actual temp according to my thermoworks pen during the cook. For example flat alarm went off for 165 degrees, probed temp because I didn't believe it based on the bark and it was at 144.... Later on in the cook after it developed a nice bark, and actually probed 170 with my thermoworks pen, went to wrap and put it away thinking well if it hits 195-200 then it will likely be under temp. Not the case, both meatsick probes registered 195, which I usually start probing for tenderness to pull it. The flat was 208 and same with the point. Thankfully I didn't wait to probe and got it off the egg, the day was saved by thermoworks probe and my eyeballs. If I ran the cook just by meatstick I would have had a $200 Brisket failure. ... show more
