  • Great e-bike rack at half the price of the big brands
Size: 2-Bike Rack-160lbs Capacity Color: Red-Platform Style
We had been using a hitch mount Yakima for years before switching to e-bikes. My wife's e-bike is a step-through model which required using one of those bike bar adapters in order to transport it with that rack, and due to the weight of the e-bike/battery, the bike bar broke on a recent trip. We needed to switch to a platform-type rack that didn't rely on hanging the bike by the frame. After researching racks by Saris, Thule, and Yakima that were all $650 and up, I found this rack for half the price. Setup was fairly straightforward, everything just bolted together easily. I like how fast and easy it is to get our two e-bikes (E-Lux cruiser type bikes) on the rack and secured. On our first trip I did experience one of the bikes front wheels bounced up off the tire holder, but that was because I neglected to use the included nylon webbing strap to secure the front tire. The bar that clamps down over the front wheel isn't meant to hold the bike down with a lot of tension, it's meant to keep the bike from moving side to side, so I recommend always using those straps to secure the front wheel. The platform can get pretty bouncy holding two 80 lb. e-bikes a foot or so away from the vehicle, so best to make sure everything is nice and secure. The quality of the rack is very high and I'm really pleased with it. The only thing I'm concerned about wearing out over time is the joint mechanism to fold the rack up and down for use. it's a little touchy, requiring some finagling to get it to snap into position. There is an included safety pin that takes the pressure of the mechanism when in transit and I also highly recommend always having that in place, removing it only when you need to fold the rack up or down. Otherwise I was pretty delighted with the sturdiness of the unit (the pictures don't do justice to how thick and sturdy the metal is) and would buy it again. ... show more

  • They carried our heavy electric bikes a long way with no issues.
Size: 2-Bike Rack-160lbs Capacity Color: Red-Platform Style
Good but not great. For the price it was acceptable. Finding a receiver bike rack rated for heavy electric bikes and capable of holding one with fat tires and one with regular tires for a reasonable price is not easy. I figured I would give this one a shot as it looked like it would work on paper. It did work but not as easily as it may look. First, the instructions are correct in the assembly if you look at those diagrams. If you look at the pictures on Amazon, you will see some with the wheel holder installed backwards (taller end out). Maybe for a really short wheel based bike that would work. I put this together based on how it looked in the pictures and how I thought it should to get the locking bar to work right but neither bike would fit. With the front wheel in the holder, the back wheel was off the end of the bar. Needing to leave for vacation the next day and after a moment of panic, I went back to the computer and looked at the pictures. It was then I realized some were correct and some not correct. The tall end of the wheel cradle goes to the inside and once you do that the bikes fit fine. Now to fastening them down. Well again it looked good on paper. The locking bar is nice and sturdy and easy to move. The problem is most people don't like getting water and mud splattered on themselves so bikes have front fenders. The locking bar is made to go on top of the front wheel in front and against the frame. It cannot with the fender in place. This means it cannot go in the correct position to hold without the possibility of just popping off. With the wheel cradle reversed like I had them initially in the wrong position, the locking bars could have been on the frame behind the handlebars and not on the wheel itself. That doesn't work with the cradles in correctly so I just used some small cam lock straps. One to hold the wheel in the cradle (there are nice slots for a 1" strap to go through) and then I strapped the locking bar in place on the top of the wheel. Problem solved. On the back I also used a cam lock strap because I don't really trust the one rubber strap provided with my $2500 bike. I then put a piece of foam between the bikes and strapped them to each other. It was solid for 460 miles each way. I even wrapped the bikes in plastic so no salt spray from winter roads would get on them. While it could use improvement, overall I am happy and would buy this again. ... show more

  • Surprisingly good
Size: 2-Bike Rack-160lbs Capacity Color: Red-Platform Style
Purchased this to transport our 2 new e-bikes (Aventon aventure 2’s) on a 1000 mile road trip. These bikes are very heavy (77lbs each), so I was very skeptical after reading some of the reviews. We transported without the batteries so that shed 10-15 lbs each. The assembly was very easy, instructions seemed to be fine. As long as you have basic mechanical skills and tools it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to assemble. It is large an awkward so a second set of hands is a plus. The bolts that connect the brackets that hold the 2 square tubes together needs to be very tight to prevent them from being able to slide…to the point where you start to bend the brackets. With that being said I did not trust the Chinese bolts that came in the kit so I purchased higher quality bolts elsewhere. I also used lock-tight to prevent them from loosening. The Allignment stickers that come on the bike rack are close but wait until you put your bikes on it to make final adjustment and then tighten the s#!t out of the bolts. Just for extra peace of mind since our trip was so long I installed large zip ties in addition to to straps provided to make sure they couldn’t fall off on the Highway. I also installed tail lights on it because our fat tire bikes blocked most of the suvs. That will depend on your bikes and vehicle. The bike carrier does move a bit during transport…it’s just the nature of the beast. The first 20 miles I watched it like a hawk and stopped and checked it a few times. After that I felt a little better and relaxed a bit. Stopped and checked about 100 miles in and everything was still good so was pretty confident that it was going to be good for the trip. Fast forward to 500 miles and my copilot had taken a turn driving and pulled out in front of a car that was doing 50 mph…our suv lost the battle but the bikes and the bike rack never budged. Finding a rental with a hitch was fun, but once we found one we transferred it over and continued on. In conclusion…you can’t beat this bike rack for the money! ... show more
