When I first removed this mattress from the packaging, I wasn't entirely sure how tall of a mattress it would be, since the vacuum packaging compresses it pretty compactly. However within a couple hours, the mattress had fully expanded to it's final size. For me, it's the perfect balance between firm and soft. The top has a nice amount of plushness to it, but not so much that you sink in without support. It looks nice and feels comfortable to lay on. We got it for my daughter's room, but if I'm honest, I enjoy laying on it too. It's a comfortable mattress in a box option. Mattresses in a box is such a great concept! This Martha Stewart brand twin bed arrived in a tall and somewhat heavy box. The bed was vacuumed in between layers of plastic. It expanded to full size overnight. There was some off-gassing, but it wasn't too bad. Keeping a window open for couple of hours in the bedroom helped with the smell greatly. Although the mattress is rated on the soft end of the spectrum, it's still pretty firm. It's comfortable and you can feel the top cooling pad under the surface. So far, it's worked great for us.
