I'm very pleased with this light! After adding white pebbles to my tank, I was very dismayed at the yellow coloration the tank had from its original incandescent light. I initially tried installing compact fluorescent bulbs in my previous light fixture. I felt that light was way too bright and fake for the tank. The light seemed to only hit a narrow area of the tank leaving the lighting very uneven and making it difficult to look into the tank. When I found this product on Amazon, I decided to try it. The first thing I love about this light is the hood it comes with. It's so sleek and gives the tank a much more modern look than the original. The light is so much better than I expected. It's a lot brighter than my original lights and less fake looking in comparison to the compact fluorescent. The hood allows the light to distribute evenly across the tank. After examining the product, I really wonder how people have found condensation in the light console. The hood has a clear plastic barrier between the light and the tank. I keep the tank water at 82 degrees and still have not seen any condensation get on or past that barrier. The hood comes with two sizes of hinges that you can use to allow for easy opening and closing of the tank. The hinges attach to the rim of the tank, and the large ones fit my tank perfectly. The opening for the filter is 6 & 5/8 inches, and barely fit both my filter and Fluval Heater. I like the hood so much that I would probably have bought a new filter if it had been a problem. The moon light is the icing on the cake. It casts a pretty blue glow, and I think my fish likes it. One thing I should add is that when switching from the dimmer light to this one, I slowly built up the time that the light was on during the day. I did this because my fish initially seemed a little stressed out by the bright light. Now she is used to it and seems happy as ever. My plants are also thriving in this light, and the grass is growing and spreading as I had hoped. I've added three pictures to this item, so you can see the before, after, and moonlight. I'll be happy to answer any questions anyone posts.

I was a little hesitant to purchase this light online after reading some of the negative reviews. The problem with moisture corroding the lighthing system is said to be resolved by Marineland, but I sealed the area with silicone just in case. Other than that this cannopy provides more light with a more natural look than the hood that came with my 10 gallon Top Fin setup. The lighting is great, and we especially love the "moonlight" effect that is created by the night lights. It is a very welcomed addition to our tank. The lighting does create a little bit of shadow on the very edges of the tank, but the aquatic life in our tank seem to enjoy the shade (and it is very little). The look of the hood took more time for me to become comfortable with. Our previous hood had the high back sloped look, and the Marineland is honestly more like a bubble in the middle of the hood. I had no problem fitting my Tetra Whisper EX20 HOB filter in the cutout. There are a couple of notches for hoses and power cables near the hinges. One of the best features of this hood are the hinges. I love having the ability to lift my hood with one hand to feed, or to tilt the hood back while cleaning out the thank. Before I would have to remove the hood and deal with the condensation before I fed or did anything to the tank. Now all of the water just runs back into the tank as I lift the hood. The question I am still unsure of about the tank is whether the LEDs are powerful enough for low light plants. Our tank is all artificial except for two Marimo Moss Balls, and these are the lowest of low light plants. I have yet to see a calculation for how much light is being put out, and I am not ready to add plants to this tank. My understanding, if you are looking to do a planted thank this is not the hood for you

It looks nice and it would most likely fit others needs well. Definitely fits my 20 longs perfectly. That being said i am a keeper of betta fish. I use dividers in my 20 longs and divide them into 3 sections to hold 3 bettas. The light unit does not stretch the full length of the hood. The middle section is nicely lit. The two sides however barely recieve any light at all as it doesnt shine through the dividers. Now im left with either replacing the 3 hoods i just bought with other types of hoods and lights or trying to find a lighting option for the two sides (which is proving to be very difficult). Not to mention adding 2 more lights means needing more outlets to plug them into. This hood would be so perfect if the light just ran the length of the hood. Also every time i lift the hood the light falls off so i either have to remove it or hold it with one hand. Supposedly its supposed to lock in place but every time i think its locked it still ends up falling off. So i just dont trust it anymore. Though again my only true issue is the length of the light. I could work with removing it or holding it when lifting the lid if it lit up the whole tank. So if you arent dividing your tank like me, its not bad except for the light not locking but if you are dividing the tank DO NOT buy these.

I just received this a couple of days ago. I wanted to post a review for those who had questions like I did before I bought this product. Maybe this can help. I also want to thank the reviewers who posted great reviews about this product, you'all helped me to decide to order this instead of buying a different product at the store. 1. I have a Marineland 10 gal tank that is about 5 years old. The old hood with the light bulbs just started to fall apart. It lasted a long time considering that it had water deposits on it. I was actually a bit afraid of it as the bulbs would detach from their screw in part but would somehow still be working and producing light, even though it was only attached by filaments. I would replace the bulbs even if they still worked on a regular basis to try to keep this from happening, but sometimes I was too late. Finally the whole electrical unit just seemed loose. It seemed like an electrical shock just waiting to happen so I decided to replace it. 2. I love the light on this hood. It is bright, crisp and the blue moon light is gorgeous. I only wish the light bar was a bit longer, as the edges of the tank are a bit too dark, but not enough to remove a star from my review. I moved around my silk plants and now it looks excellent. The blue lights make some colors really pop out. 3. My old hood had open ended covers for the lights, I assume because of the heat they produced. This, like I mentioned above, allowed water to corrode the bulbs themselves. This new LED hood has the light unit as a separate entity that is placed on the hood itself and snapped in (though a bit loosely, I plan on removing it for water changes to prevent it from falling out). This is great as there is an entire solid clear plastic shield between the light unit and the water. The light unit does not get wet, so I'm hoping it will last a long time. Being LED it is of course much cooler. 4. This new hood is hinged onto the back of the tank, unlike the old one that just sat on the tank. I really like this feature as I no longer worry about the hood slipping into the tank and electrocuting everything. The hinges are attached separately and securely, but like I noted before, this is a Marineland tank so the hinges are designed for this tank, and maybe will not work for others. There are two hinges but a third one was included with the kit in case one breaks. I have not had problems with the water flowing out of the hood out of the tank area, as some have reported. I find I can lift the hood to feed the fish with no problem. There is also a small door in front that slides out for that purpose, but I would rather just lift the hood. This is also an attractive hood with a low profile. 5. My 10 gal Marineland tank measures 20 in by 10 in exactly. On the top of the tank but slightly inside there runs a little ledge that the old hood sat on, and this one is the same. So because it has to fit inside the top of the tank, this hood is a bit smaller, at about 19 1/8 inch by 9 1/4 inch, according to my measurements. The cut out for the filter is about 6 1/2" by about 2 1/2 inches. My filter and heater fit inside this nicely. There is another small hole for a heater cord to fit through, if needed. 5A The box this came in says 20 x 10 in Fits *most* 20" x 10" aquariums as well as 10, 16 extra high and 20 extra high. 6. As another reviewer noted, my fish seem happier. My neons come out more from the shadows, the other fish seem perkier in a non-neurotic way too. I don't know if it is because of the quality of the light, or that it doesn't throw out heat, or something else I can't guess. 7. The blue moon light!! ! Mentioning it again because it's awesome. I'll update this review as time goes on to check the durability of this product. But if is like my old Marineland hood, it will probably last, even if it becomes a danger to the fish and people around it hehehe. ~ Shay

Ordered for my daughter's new fish tank. The light is less bright in her room than the 60 watt equivalent lamp she insisted on keeping on before now. The plastic feels very sturdy and is thicker than expected -- thick enough that my wife opted not to enlarge the opening for the power filter (either by melting with an old soldering iron or by cutting and smoothing with her Dremel) but went shopping for a different one instead. She found one that was not only the PERFECT SIZE, even had a little extra room for the heater cord, but also was rated for a 30 gallon tank (150 GPH). It's a good idea to "size up" your power filter, especially with a kid who might overfeed or be dying to add just one more fish. The power filter is branded National Geographic (who knew?) and is a clever design with 2 sets of smaller filter pads set perpendicular to the back of the tank. It's not on Amazon yet; I found it locally at PetSmart: http://www.petsmart.com/fish/filters/national-geographic-trade-aquarium-filter-zid36-22002/cat-36-catid-300088 Nothing has been set up long, so time will tell, but it's off to a great start! The fit on a standard 10 gallon tank is perfect. Two sets of hinges are supplied: the smaller one fit the trim perfectly and allow the cover to sit just inside the rim. You do have to push and wiggle the hinge back & forth to get it to snap into place. The cover DOES has a small opening on the other end, near the back hinge, for a power cord and/or airline tubing (maybe this is a recent improvement). As for the reviewer who commented about condensation running off the back edge and making a mess, either they didn't have a good size match or they were lifting the cover until it's vertical. I can lift the cover at least 70 degrees before it looks like it might possibly drip on the top of the power filter, and even 45 degrees is more than enough to give me full access to the tank. My daughter had no trouble sliding off the piece in front so she can feed the fish through this little "port," but we've opted to just stow that piece away for now. With or without that piece in place, it's easy to lift the whole hood when needed. The hinges work well and are a clever improvement over the old flat hoods. I do wish they had included some sort of clever swiveling "arm" to clip to the side of the tank and prop up the hood, like propping up the hood of a car. There are several notches in the sides of the hood that would make such a prop easy to use. We'll figure out something that works, but it would be a nice addition to a great design.

This aquarium hood is a great price at only $25.00! Most hoods you will find in a pet shop are either plain glass or a standard hood with bulb for double the cost. Add only a few dollars more of eligible Amazon prime aquarium goodies and you'll get free shipping while only paying a few dollars more. (I added filter cartridges and saved myself $4.00.) The LEDs create a pure white light and while ineffective for plants, make your aquarium gorgeous. The blue-light night mode is very sleek and actually looks more like a blacklight at night. Because of this I try not to leave it on too long (my fish don't mind it but it sort of hurts my own eyes) but it's definitely a personal preference. The LED bar as a protective plastic underneath it, keeping the lights safe from your aquarium water and residue. Huge plus if you have an aerator/bubbler or particularly aggressive filter outflow. I had a bit of issue snapping the light bar in because the instructions kept saying "rotate" and "twist" which did not compute, but after a little bit of brute force I got it to snap into place. The adapter cord is actually removable and can plugged and unplugged from the light bar which is also awesome if you ever opt not to use it or are in a situation you want the cords out of the way. I ordered the 24x12 tank hood for my 20 gallon tall. It fits perfectly, maybe even a bit loosely if you're going to nit pick. However, that does not bother me because the hood is hinged and the tiny bit of extra room lets it open and close more easily. The kit includes three different clip sizes that attach to the rim of your aquarium. From there they snap onto the back of the hood, creating a hinged cover that won't get away from you. This is probably my favorite feature especially as I didn't read the package close enough to realize it was included! The instructions inside the box are a bit confusing - it's much easier just to snap the clips onto your tank and then snap the hood on while pressing it down vertically. For some reason the instructions like "twist" a lot and it's barely helpful. Once the clips and hood were on though, they sat solidly. The front of the hood has a removable insert that can be slid out to make an opening for feeding. It's not that big and I can barely get my fingertips to touch the water, so most of the time I have to lift the hood. Some other reviewers mentioned the spaces on the back of the hood not being big enough. On the 20g hood, there are two slots that have snap off plastic covers. Once snapped, they are removed forever. Each one is maybe seven inches long. I have two filters, a Tetra Whisper i20 and Tetra Whisper 20EX and had to remove both panels but still have a bit of room to spare. There is a separate square hole for air tubing lines that is pre-punched into the hood so you don't have to worry about breaking off both panels in order to accommodate spread out layouts. Over all, I really love this hood. A first I was not impressed as the plastic seems sort of flimsy and the instructions weren't as straightforward as they should be, but in the end I tossed the sheet and put it together myself and was still impressed. The light plastic makes it easier to open and close it and withstood a pounding as I punched out the filter panels and snapped the LED bar into place. I also really love the look and energy efficiency of LEDs in general so at this price, the hood is a great investment.

Disappointed i got this for my 29 gallon tank and it fits well but the light is the same size as my 10 gallon tank. Definitley thought the light bar would be larger it makes the tank very dim.

This product could use a little more information in the product review. The way this hood is designed is to sit slightly inside the tank, on the black lip of plastic that is usually on the top of standard glass tanks. It has a clip system that snaps onto the same plastic rim, that allows the whole hood to be rotated upwards and remain attached to the back. *So if you don't have that standard aquarium black lip that has a small shelf type protrusion inside the tank, this hood will not fit. It IS smaller than the measurements in the description. I believe Marineland is stating that it will fit into that size of a tank. I had the most difficult time getting the LED to snap in to place, but once it snapped I was golden. The lighting is great. I have some very basic aquarium plants that are thriving under this light. -I actually had trouble setting up the whole thing. The instructions were alright but my tank was angled against a wall diagonally so it created some difficulties. Not impossible to figure out though. There's also a small insert on the very front of the hood that you can pull out so you can have a constant small gap that you can feed fish through. This hood was designed very well with how it attaches and the general design. The LEDs have a protective, removable plastic cover between where they sit and the water. The wire for the LED plugs in on the outside of the hood on the back(not sure if this is common, but I had a terrible experience with one that plugged in inside the tank) in a nice little dipped/hidden area, not disturbing the sleek form of the top. Only complaint I might have is that the space for wires to exit the tank is rather small, and often my wires will slip to where the hood pivots on the snap on clips and cause an issue with opening and closing. Not that bad though. I really enjoy this hood. It's perfect for the standard Tetra 20g tank I just got. I can't comment on filter compatibilities, however, since I use a submerged filter.
