The SM4008 is just getting started, however, as it also comes with a footplate to facilitate seated rows; a total leg developer that tones and strengthens your quads, hamstrings, and glutes; and a chin-up bar for pull-ups and other back exercises. And, of course, the utility bench is fully adjustable, with options for incline, flat, and decline chest press positions. To ensure maximum comfort, the seat and back pad are made of boxed upholstery with high-density foam. • Great, easy assembly, and same as MWM-990
Color: Grey - MWM-988
I love this machine. Small, compact, and could easily be a good stand alone unit and only home gym. Personally, I use it in addition to a free weight bench. My space for more equipment is limited, so when my parents bought the MWM-990 and after assembling it for them and seeing in person how little space it took, and then testing it, I knew I had to have one. I searched and this one came up but was listed for half what my parents paid for their 990, so I ordered this one. Having assembled the 990, and now the 988, and then using both, I can tell you they are the same. Any differences between them would have to be pointed out to me because I didn't notice any other than color. If anything, my 988 is smoother in operation. I know I got lucky on price, but if you are finding this one cheaper than the 990, or just like the color of this one better, get this one. It's the same machine. You aren't missing anything from the 990 by getting this one. Assembly was easy. Took me a little under 3 hours, by myself, both timse. I don't understand any review stating it takes all day, or is difficult, etc. Instructions are blow out style pictures and easy to follow. Listed hardware on each step don't always match what they picture (listed will say 4 washers, but photo clearly shows 8, etc) but it's irrelevant. Follow the pictures. It all works out in the end. Package arrived kind of abused, but materials are strong inside and no damage occurred. Packaged well and can withstand a "rough" delivery. I'm 6'3" with a tall torso for my height, and have no problems using the machine. I've seen some reviews saying it's too small for 6' and above. I disagree. Just because the pull down bar comes with a long chain doesn't mean you need to use the entire length. I use half the length of the chain and can get full movement on pull downs. Hope this helps someone out there. In my opinion, the only better machines out there are the much bigger machines (which I would of bought if I had the space). The 988/990 are the best bang for the size, being the best bang for the buck is a bonus. ... show more

  • High Quality, Well Built
Color: Grey - MWM-988
Overall, I have almost nothing but good things to say about this equipment. It is very sturdy, well built, and of high quality. I have had the opportunity to use it multiple times over the last couple of weeks since it arrived, and it has functioned flawlessly. I was hesitant to purchase it off Amazon after receiving equipment (from other brands) in the past that felt wobbly, unsteady, or cheap, but I was very pleasantly surprised by what I received. Assembly took 2-3 hours, but was pretty simple. There were two areas of the instructions that weren't as clear as I'd have liked them, and the assembly instructions are just images, no text, but overall it was simple enough to fill in the gaps. The machine comes in three boxes... One large box with all pieces of the machine itself, as well as two smaller boxes each filled with weights. The smaller boxes are heavy, but very manageable. The large box, though, requires two people to lift/move safely. I was able to assemble the machine completely on my own, but it would have been considerably easier with two people, if you have someone else available that can help. Overall, for the price this was an amazing purchase. I would definitely recommend this to someone for a home-gym (assuming you have the space). ... show more

  • workable partial solution during COVID crisis
Color: Grey - MWM-988
First, there are really no instructions, no instructional video, zip. I assembled mine after a few false starts, no parts were missing. Download the pdf manauals from marcypro.com site (easier to enlarge on screen) and visualize all the steps in your mind to come up with a plan for dealing with assembly problems. For example, make Sure to thread the cables all the way through before connecting pulleys, as you won't be able to get the cable ends past the pulleys and you'll have to disassemble them and begin again. Don't assemble while tired as you're really going to have to pay attention - there's no guidance or warnings on any potential problems. My large metal plate arrived totally messed up (as others have reported), we'll see how their tech support (which doesn't answer the phone) deals with this. The 'home gym' seems to have been designed by someone with little engineering experience who also doesn't actually workout. They've never heard of 'kinesthesiology' and probably couldn't pronounce it - or the word 'engineer'. It could have been so much better. The bench press is designed to impinge your shoulder joints. Taking your arms back past 90% is not a good thing - and certainly not bio-mechanically correct. You'll have to do less weight so as not to permanently hurt your joints (assuming you were exercising correctly before - very few understand the correct range of motion). The flys are ok, better than nothing. The lats are actually quite decent. Best feature of the machine. Just apply some WD40 before your first use so the plates don't stick. Buy a decent rope for triceps https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FBH6F1D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, some Extra Wide Foam Grips exercise handles https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013XGJWIS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1, a bunch of carabiner clips, and it will be basically workable - If you also have a bench and a set of dumbells. I stand in front of the machine, and with the foam handles mentioned above and the carabiner clips clipped to the very top lat hook, I can do decent rows. I haven't used it enough to figure the best way to do rows yet. All in all, for the money, I didn't see anything else that seemed better. If this COVID-19 crisis continues for 18 months, I'll look into spending a lot more to get something better. --- update 6 weeks later - upgrading to 4 stars --- First, Marcy shipped me a new metal panel to replace the one bent up in shipment within just a few days. I didn't actually want it, asked them to ship a much cheaper for them replacement cable set instead, but ... the did ship it promptly and that's good to know in case something goes wrong on the device. I found that using it for Lats works Very well, if you happen to have a pair of 10 lb leg weights to hold in your lap (which I do) so you don't lift off. Same for rows with a set of carabiners and some handles. Works quite well. The leg extension also feels decent, no complaints. If you really tighten the pulleys so there is no give, it works ok as a fly (using their rubber rollers instead of as a bench), but Only if you put a 4" piece of hard foam (like for Yoga), behind you about chest height. Of course, if the pulleys aren't loose, you can't do a bench that's biometrically correct, your shoulders are going to be Way too far back - so you'll have to do far far less weight, or else injure yourself. A bit of engineering design could have provided for this, to tighten for flys, and loosen for bench press, but ... that's not going to happen obviously. Add a tricep rope, and you can get a decent workout. Haven't tried the curls as I use a larger and larger set of dumbbells (as Amazon's stock improves). Everything indicates a 2nd wave, so ... if this become available, this is probably going to be your best bet. Just get a bunch of rubber dumbbells (Amazon Choice https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074DZHYS6/ - just keep checking for availability 100 times per day as they become available sometimes for just a few seconds) and a bench and you can survive until the gyms open up (or open up and actually become safe, I should say?) ... show more
