  • Great for alto sax, trombone, and mellophone, works for other instruments too
This lyre mount is professional-quality, with many great features: It has a soft pad with a gentle curvature to clip to the bell of your instrument, including a slot for the rim. The adjustable neck can be rotated and bent as desired, and is firm enough to stay wherever you put it. The ball and socket attachment to the platform allows it to be placed at any angle and rotation off, up to 45 degrees off the end of the neck. These allow precise and reliable positioning of your music where it is easiest to see. The clips on the bottom of the platform hold your music down for when the wind is blowing, are thin enough they will not obstruct your view, and are on both sides of the platform so the music you aren't playing at the moment can also avoid blowing around. The platform clips securely into to the mounting arm by sliding it horizontally and is relatively easy to detach for storage. I found that when playing, though, if I want to flip my lyre over it is easier to loosen the adjusting knob on the ball and socket and rotate it that way. This is quite easy to do. Ten double-sided folders are included so you can use this right away without any other accessories. I tried this on my alto sax, my trombone, and my mellophone. In each case I was able to position the lyre at a perfect angle and distance and it was easy to use. On my soprano sax, however, it was too far away because of the straight barrel. The same was true of my clarinets. This worked okay on my trumpets and bugle, but it was a bit further away than I would have liked. On my french horns, my tuba, and my flutes it was completely unusable: I could mount it on the horns and tuba, but it was to my side not in front of me, and on the flutes I couldn't mount it at all. It worked okay on my higher-pitched recorders, though I doubt a person would have reason to use a lyre with a recorder, and the clip is designed for a larger-diameter bell. ... show more

  • Another Lyre Fail for Mellophone
I've been trying to find a lyre that works for mellophone for 20+ years and... This is another one that doesn't. It probably works fine for other instruments, but if you're a mellophone hoping this is the one... It's not. That said... For any instrument, even if it does work, it's very expensive for rather shoddy quality. It's a nice concept, the metal ones are just better. Pass on this. ... show more

  • Works well
My son's old saxophone had the lyre mount fall off it, so I got him this to try instead. He says it works well; the bell mounting works as intended and holds tight, and the board holds paper just fine. It also seems pretty stable through the movement of marching. His only complaint is that it doesn't mount a phone, but it's not designed to, so that's not really a knock against it. The price is reasonable for what you get, too. As long as it lasts, no complaints! ... show more
