I use this with the plastic but heavy duty Miller Little Giant Plastic Poultry Waterer, 5 gallons. Works great. It doesn't get hot enough to melt it. I’ve used it 3 seasons in a row now, and it works really well. Around here temperatures will get down to about 10 degrees but average maybe 20 in the winter. But this thing produces a good amount of heat and actually warms the water just a bit, maybe too warm, keeping the water from freezing. I have it setup on top of 2 concrete blocks. I just add water every couple of days using 1 gallon water containers I bring from the house. Every week or so, I clean out the tray. Every month, I take it in and give it a good scrubbing and replace all the water with fresh, clean water. Doing this helps me not to worry about my birds having access to clean water. ... show more

Great heater but I suspect it’s the same as others. I bought it for a plastic waterer (not theirs - I have a Little Giant 5 gallon). After a couple of days use I could smell the plastic, which did not seem to be a good thing. I built a 1-inch deep wooden trivet to raise the waterer base off the surface of the heater and that problem is solved, and I hope this means the waterer will not be damaged by the heater. Water is staying thawed and the chickens are happy. In retrospect I think the trivet would probably make any heater safe for a plastic waterer. The maker will only warrant when used with THEIR waterer, so buyer beware if you have any other plastic waterer. ... show more

I saw some reviews about this heater not working or crapping our quickly but I decided to take the risk. My coop is far from my house so I have no choice but to run it on an extension cord which is specifically warned against. I’ve only been using it for about 2 months now but I have had a very positive experience. The thermostat works beautifully, on our cold days I touch the heater to make sure it’s working and sure enough, it has been warm every time, not hot. On the warmer days I touch it and it’s off. We have had a lot of up and down here in southern NY from 60° one day and 14° the next, this heater has done exactly what it’s supposed to. So far I’d have to say it is really great! This has been a real time saver in my cold Maine winters. It has perfectly kept the upstairs hens in constant water since I bought it. As we all know frozen chicken waterers are difficult to defrost, and with the below 0 weather we have been getting I have been most pleased with the way this product keeps the 3 gallon waterer ice free, and the hens are much happier to have water all the time. I use automatic waters in the downstairs of my barn but have been considering switching for the extreme cold we get in January. The downstairs usually keeps a temp of above 40 degrees, but the tiny tire valves in the waters sometimes freeze up close to the floor. ... show more

With this arctic blast that we’re going through the temperature has been 2° and the water has never frozen with the heater. We have battled frozen water for years now and finally broke down and bought this heater. We have a 5 gallon plastic waterer, so I can attest that it works for plastic water containers and arctic cold! I highly recommend this water heater and will never go without it again! ... show more
