Bought this a couple weeks ago before the cold snap we had here on the east coast. I combed through lots of different products and their reviews, settling on this waterer. I feel I’ve made the right choice though. It holds a good amount of water for my small flock (6 hens) and does the trick. Even in single digits and real feels in the negatives, it never allowed ice to form. Great product!

This review is for the heated chicken water with lid and nipples. I've been using this for about 6 months. I wanted to put it through a few real-world experiences before I gave it a review. I've purchased a number of water heaters for the chickens over the years and they never seem to work. This one does! This week the low was -14F with a windchill of -35F and the nipples did not freeze up. I test them every morning and night. The lid did freeze shut but that was ok for my purposes. The heated water is inside an unheated/un-insulated coop. The water stays clean and the chickens don't roost on the lid. The lid has never come off. I don't hang it, it's just sitting on a few pieces of lumber. I love the fact that I can take a gallon of water out during the week when it needs to be topped off and just remove the lid and pour. No water spilling or messing around flipping the waterer over. I give this product a 5 star review. My chickens have been laying consistently, and I think it may be because they always have water to drink not just in the morning and night when I would take out fresh water.

You would think that a product would be actually field tested before manufacturing. Nope, not this one! 1. The cord is too short. Don't buy this and have to use an extension cord. Buy a galvanized metal heated base, they come with long cords that are easy to plug in. 2. The hole for filling it on the bottom cannot possibly line up with an outdoor hydrant. Farm hydrants stand 3' or 4' high and the spout is about 3" from the pipe. The hole for filling this is almost in the center of the base which means you can't just hold it up there and fill it. Remember this is for winter - freezing weather - and we cant' use a hose, right? right. 3. There is absolutely nothing to hold on to when trying to hold the thing up to a hydrant and tilt it just enough to get water inside it. I get soaked every time; trying to pull down the handle on the hydrant with one hand and balance the waterer on one knee with the other hand. Thanks a lot designers! 4. The rim of the trough is almost even with the water release level which means if it is even 1/8" not level it will spill right out. Don't buy this. Buy a galvanized one that has a rim that's higher than the water release so if it is even 1" not level it doesn't matter. [maybe the designers have perfectly level ground for their chickens huh?] 5. Buy a galvanized fountain and a galvanized heated base. They do rust over many years, but last a long time if you clean them up and put them away in the spring. I've been on this Michigan farm over 40 years and I have never seen such a stupid un-usable design.

The media could not be loaded. I don’t like how flimsy the bucket part is. I’ve had it come apart while trying to fill in the water spilled everywhere. In the winter, it is hard to fill it without taking the base off without a hose and I don’t have a hose going in the winter. I still give it four stars because if I managed to get it filled up and set up level and plugged into heat, it will last for a week in freezing temperatures, which is exactly what I wanted. I can’t see it being strong enough to hold up to being hung. I’m not even going to attempt it.

Living in the Texas Panhandle means dealing with some crazy weather, and this past arctic blast was brutal! Our original heated chicken waterer cracked in the freeze, leaving my flock without access to water. That's a disaster waiting to happen, especially in such cold temperatures. Thankfully, this Farm Innovators heated waterer was a lifesaver! It kept the water ice-free even during the worst of the freeze. It's well-made and seems durable enough to withstand the elements. The size is perfect for my flock of five, and it's easy to clean and refill. Raising chickens has become not just a fun and educational experience for the family, but also a real necessity, especially with the recent egg shortages and price increases. Having a reliable heated waterer is absolutely essential for keeping my chickens healthy and productive, especially during the harsh Texas winters. This Farm Innovators waterer did exactly what it was supposed to do, and I'm incredibly grateful for it. Highly recommend for anyone raising chickens in areas with freezing temperatures!

Love this waterer! I have been using it all winter, and it’s worked great. I am in a state where it occasionally gets below 0 degrees Fahrenheit, and I STILL have not seen it totally frozen over. Under 0°F, it will form a thin layer of ice on top, but nothing beyond that. The chickens peck right through and drink with no issues. I love that I don’t have to remove the bottom to refill, there is a rubber “cap” on the bottom that allows me to easily fill it up. Just make sure to use a high quality extension cord if you run one out to the coop, as the weather outside can be brutal!

This product has worked well. Did start to get ice crystals in water when temperatures reached below zero, but overall pleased with how it keeps the water unfrozen. The fill hole leaves something to be desired. Filling it from the bottom is not ideal and even after getting the hang of filling it, when you flip it back over some water leaks out. If it’s not completely level water is everywhere. Works but if I needed another waterer I would look into other options.
