I’ve been through quite a few waterer’s for my flock of 16 chickens. This is by far the best. I hate the ones that you need to turn upside down to fill. What a stupid design that is. Difficult and often ends up opening while flipping it over so you end up soaked and need to start over. Especially in the winter that’s the worst! So I love that this is right side up! No flipping and spilling while filling up. I also love that it’s clear so it’s easy to see how much is left even from afar, don’t need to go and open it to see water level. And this cover is great, comes on and off easily. Some other waterer’s I have the lids are soo hard to open, especially in the winter with gloves on it’s really difficult. This one just pops on and off. I have not used the heat function yet since it is now summertime. Hoping that works good too… ... show more

My chickens could not figure this out, even when I tried different training methods (including putting yogurt on the nipples, which worked with our other drinker). I gave them too long to try it out, and then of course it became too late to return the product. So a warning to others: I think if your chickens don't get the hang of it in two weeks there's no point in trying longer. If it helps others-- we used to have one with nipples that went straight down (not to the side) so maybe that transition was too much for their brains to handle. ... show more

I got this for providing water to my quail in the winter. For me it is just the right size to fit in their inclosed coop. The quail had no problems getting water despite them being mutch smaller than chickens. My quail are messy drinkers so their is a little build up of ice under the nipples and no signs it is leaking. When it comes to filling it it is extremely easy and it holds enough water to last a few days if necessary due to a bad snow storm. It is ironic that they say don't use an extension cord, but most of us do just that. I have 29 quail and they had no problems getting use to the three nipples. I do recommend this product on the basis of the many reviews I have read that were positive and at this time my 1 month of use. I and my quail are very happy that the heater is keeping the water liquid even in the single digits and negative wind chill. All my quail are healthy and happy. I have used other heated water ears, and they were a pain in the neck. This is easy to use, and works very well. I now have three of them, and the older ones still work after several years. I do find that dirt gets in somehow, and detaching them to clean now and then is a minor inconvenience, but I have the cord wound through the pen to outside - if the plug was inside it would be pretty easy. The design might work better if it wasn’t round, as sometimes one nipple ends up in the back where the hens can’t get at it. But, all in all, a very good product. I wouldn't be exaggerating to say that I think this poultry drinker is the best thing since sliced bread. Not having to worry about our chickens' water freezing is such a huge relief. As for the chickens, they took right took right to it, even though they'd never seen this type of drinker before. After hanging it, I tapped one of the drinking nipples, expelling water into the little water reservoir. Seeing this the first hen stepped up, pecked the drinking nipple, took a drink, and the rest quickly followed. Filling and cleaning it has been a breeze. That's because the top removes while the unit is still hanging. To clean it I simply wipe it out with one of those disposable cleaning wipes. Furthermore, cleaning is even easier now that I've learned to add 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar to it every time I fill it with 2 gallons of water, no more slime issues. Do though remember to keep your drinker out of direct sunlight, as sunlight encourages algae growth. As for electricity usage, I put a watt meter on it and it turns out that only cost about 30 cents per day, where I live in West Virginia, when its heating on cold days, and it only turns on when the temperature reaches 42 degrees Fahrenheit/5 degrees Celsius or lower. Our chickens like to huddle around it on really cold nights, this is because the water in it acts as a thermal mass. Just like the rest of us, chickens like to be warm. This poultry drinker is the perfect size for our eight hen flock and I would highly recommend it to anyone living in an area where freezing temperatures are a concern. BUY THIS!!! This remarkable drinker eliminated the problem of a dirty water bowl that needed to be cleaned several times a day in freezing weather. (This was due to wild birds invading my chicken yard and for some reason they all had to poop in the heated dog bowl I was using.). My 11 chickens, who had been raised on vertical nipples, figured out the horizontals on this new drinker right away. (Which I now see are truly superior to the verticals). They actually seem to enjoy drinking out it. I had removed the dog bowl to force them to use the new drinker, and when I brought it back as an experiment, see photo, most of them still preferred this new drinker. I feel confident leaving it as the only drinker now. We’ve had temps down to 23º F so far, and no issues with freezing. When it gets colder here, which it will, I’ll update this review. This is my second purchase of the same waterer. It’s a great style and the chickens do get accustomed to drinking this way. It works well in the winter to keep a steady supply of water available at all times. They don’t get a lot of water when they drink so it is recommended to keep a standard waterer as well ... show more
