  • The straps are...not bad
The blocks are solid. Worth the price. The straps are cam buckles and are okay. Actually some of the better cams I've used. But for securing my canoe I used ratchet straps. The cams worked fine for about 50 miles but I was getting some noise and vibration from the wind and when I replaced them with some decent straps it went away. I'll save the straps for another use but won't use again for securing the canoe to my truck ... show more

  • Easy to use, even the first time!
We have a Pelican 15.5 foot canoe. Not light weight. We have a Toyota Camry. With the canoe on its hull, we set the foam blocks on the gunwales, two on each side. With one person at each end, we carefully hoist the canoe to shoulder height and guide her as she tilts to gunwale side down on the top of the car. Once on the car, it was a relief to find that it's easy to adjust the foam blocks and to center the canoe. It's also easy to push a little forward or back so the front and back end straps will be at an angle (not straight) for added support once they're tied on. We don't have boat racks on the roof of the car, which I think makes it easier to mount because we don't have to line up the four foam blocks to the railings and seat them. Our next step is to use the two very sturdy and strong straps and run these through the car. with all car doors open, we run one strap through the front doors, the second strap through the back doors, tighten and tie off loose ends so they don't flap in the wind, then close all car doors. These straps are what offers the most stability, this is what is holding the canoe onto the car. There is only one of these flat straps pictured, but the kit comes with two. Next we use the ropes (ours are black) to tie the bow and stern to the car. This is where I made some modifications. I don't use the included S hook, I use carabiners. I tied one carabiner to each end of one of the ropes, push a loop at the middle of the rope through the hole in the handle area of the canoe, and thread both ends of the rope through this loop (making a large enough loop to pass the carabiners through). I adjusted for length with additional knots. Now all I do is hook/unhook the carabiners on the metal circle cut-outs at both sides of the front under frame of the car, creating a stabilizing A-Frame shape. For the back I didn't find a good place to attach carbiners (or S hooks for that matter), and would need a longer rope to run it through the under-bumper frame. Luckily our car has a spoiler so we're simply tying the back rope from the hole in the handle to the spoiler (using same loop and thread method we used for the front). I don't use carabiners here. Again, straps are the main support, whereas, as it seems to me, the front and back are for extra stabilization (they're not holding the canoe on to the car), so not finding a strong metal frame to tie onto wasn't much of a concern. I would have liked longer rope here, though. It would have allowed more options, especially if we didn't have a spoiler. Another three or four feet would likely address most car scenarios. We've used this kit and taken the canoe off and on eight or nine trips, while the canoe stayed on the car for about a month. It takes my husband and I less than ten minutes to unstrap or restrap. Everything held up well. The ropes are strong and seem weather proof (looks like nylon), straps are super strong with a sturdy metal buckle with teeth which firmly catches the straps, and the foam blocks take a lot of pushing, shoving and weight with only a little change in shape and zero tears or nicks. I'm only taking off one star for the shorter than I'd like length of the ropes, and my own preference for carabiners rather than S hooks. Bottom line, I'd both recommend it and buy it again. ... show more

  • Very nice complete kit
I have gotten a chance to use this kit on several occasions now. The foam blocks are sufficiently tall enough to allow the loads to clear the roof without interference when used without any roof rack. The blocks are sufficiently soft to get a good grip on my cars roof and do not mar the paint finish. The blocks have slots on one side for a boat gunnel and slots on the other side for existing roof racks. I use mine without racks, but the blocks would protect the finish on the boat and rack, and would provide additional grip. The cam-straps are of high quality and are nicer and heavier duty than any other web straps I have owned over the years, The buckles are within a protective boot. The buckles provide a tight secure grip, and allow a very taut secure tie-down. I simply open the car doors and wrap the straps around the load and around the car roof. I was a little concerned about the car door rubber weatherstripping, but saw no harm to them after a number of highway trips. As with any straps, be sure to twist them a few turns so they straps do not vibrate and “thrum” the car at highway speeds. The auxiliary ropes for the ends of the load are plenty strong, but the rope material is smooth and slippery. Extra care to tie proper knots, with a few extra half hitches is recommended. I almost knocked off one star for these slippery ropes, but the kit is so much better than any other I have tried or inspected that I’ll keep the five stars… The ropes and straps fit within a provided cardboard box, and I was pleased and surprised that the whole kit actually fits neatly back into its original package – a neat clear plastic rectangular bag. This is kind of wonderful, as it encourages me to keep the kit with me all of the time; ready to launch any time I need it for an unexpected find! The kit is perfect for metal or wooden boats, and can be used for light loads of long lumber – I’ve used pieces of closet pole for the cross beams to carry long boards. This kit is the best in its class... <update>please be aware that some cars have side curtain air bags under the roof side, which may be interfered by the straps wrapped under the car roof? Pull your car manual to ensure that you do not interfere with side airbag function? My cars are OK... ... show more

  • Not to use long distance
I used this to transport a canoe from Ontario to Ga, and had an hour added to the drive because of issues with keeping canoe from moving around. Ended up only using the blocks and other products to keeps it tight on the car. Short distances, I’m sure it would be fine.

  • Foam worked well, glad I bought better cinch straps
The foam blocks worked well, but I'm glad I bought stronger cinch straps as the ones that come with the kit are only so-so.
