I bought this set rather quickly and I am really impressed with the qualty and smooth apperance. Used the bowls in the microwave and it took longer than usual to warm up my wife's chili. I am no engineer but I'd say density of the bowl...i.e. quality porcelain I bet. We don't care for stoneware and this is not stoneware and has a great texture. No I don't get paid by these folks...just older and sometines wiser!

Overall, 3.5/5 Why is the porcelain INSIDE? Is ‘gourmet porcelain’ this heavy? I don’t know. But what I can see from the description is that the porcelain portion is INSIDE the plate – the 2nd of six layers. The listing title does mention that the set is PORCELAIN as well as CERAMIC so buyer beware. These are dense plates and bowls with a glossy finish. The plates are extremely shallow with low rims. They wash easily and so far, have not absorbed any coloring from pasta and meat sauces. This is after 2+ weeks of daily use. I’m trying to exchange out my messy mish-mash dishes for that all white look. This CERAMIC set is a good start.

Porcelain or ceramic? This has come up in other reviews. This dinnerware is made from kaolin clay, which is typically used in porcelain, whereas ceramic dinnerware uses cheaper clays. Some of the uncertainty in other reviews is that this dinnerware weighs more than typical porcelain dinnerware. Other than for the sake of an argument, it really doesn’t make much difference to someone scooping up a forkful of spaghetti! We, as a family, like this dinnerware. We have used it almost exclusively for several weeks. The dinner and salad plates use a contemporary design commonly found in stoneware. Namely a flat plate with a raised rim. This rim is very useful for corralling peas. I got the set with the black rim, just because. It turns out that I like this bit of trim. The dinnerware can appear a bit formal and also works with casual settings. I have some complaints that aren’t reflected in the five stars I have given the set. There are pieces missing, which would make the set more useful. Such as pasta bowls, appetizer plates, and serving plates and bowls. I looked at the MALACASA Amazon shop, and this collection isn’t even listed. Let alone additional pieces. I think the price is a bit high, but everything costs more these days.

Malacasa is a high quality maker of porcelain dinnerware. They are porcelain and not simply ceramic, which means they are more chip resistant and more durable overall. They are also microwave safe and won't heat up nearly as much as ceramic or stoneware. That's because porcelain doesn't retain as much moisture during the firing process. It's fired at a much higher temperature and longer than mere ceramics or stoneware. All that translates into a much higher quality item. The style of this set is simple and has a kind of Asian appeal. I like that a lot. This set is going to replace a highly decorated dinnerware set that makes it difficult to easily see the food. I'm really liking the clean white appearance of this dinnerware.
