I think these are solid plates but they are heavy & make a sandpaper sound when you slide them across a table because the bottom rim is like terracotta pot-like. It also feels like terracotta pot on the bottom rim, which is a feeling I don't like to touch. These are also NOT oven safe & will break. I like the cup handles & they feel good in the hand & where you would place your thumb on the top. Overall, I would stick with Corelle if I had to do it all over again. Love this dinnerware set. We ordered on set in black and one in white and we have them intermingled. I do have to say we have broken 3 salad plates and one bowl from the white set. It must be more fragile. That being said, every break was my fault. I wanted to use this set for a while before I wrote a review. Two months later, of daily and frequent use, and I still love this set. PROS: It really does look chic. I honestly haven't noticed any of the "dripping" of the glaze down the sides that others have mentioned. I LOVE that the plates have an edge -- it's not something I ever considered before, but it's so helpful. I can pile the plate high and not worry about sauces, crumbs, etc coming off the side. The matte black looks beautiful, and the dishes have a proper weight to them that makes them feel expensive. I also really appreciate that the bowls are huge, and deep. AND, I know this is a no-no, but I've put them in the dishwasher daily. I live in an itty bitty NYC apartment that's lucky enough to have a dishwasher (but zero counter space) so handwashing is not going to happen. These dishes have survived with zero chips and scratches. CONS: Because of the material, they do "scrape" against each other -- as in, they make a scraping noise when bumped, or when silverware is used. It doesn't bother me particularly, but it's worth noting. (Though it seems a given considering the material?) Also, due to the lip of the plates, I need to separate them in the dishwasher by a gap to make sure they're washed thoroughly. Not a big deal, and I much prefer having the lip. All in all, I'm really pleased. These dishes make eating feel a bit more special, and well worth the $50 I spent. ... show more
