  • Very pleased
Style: Kit w/ String Trimmer Attachment
Very easy to use. No mess with gas mixtures. No pull start and heat from a muffler. I like the instant on and variable speed as I squeeze the trigger. I had my doubts if it would be strong enough, well I was pleasantly surprised. Plenty strong to cut through weeds and tall grass. Very pleased with how well it handles. ... show more

  • Bad To The Bone!!!
Style: Kit w/ String Trimmer Attachment
Amazon requests that I choose one to five stars under the “Lightweight” category. Lightweight and this trimmer do not go hand in hand. If you want a lightweight powerhead/trimmer/pole saw/etc combo, this isn’t for you. If you want a heavy duty cordless trimmer, this is for you - especially if you have more batteries than what comes with this. I bought an aftermarket string head that takes cut to length pieces of cutter string. I’m running small steel wire cable cut into 10” pieces, because of being overrun by saw briars. Needless to say that has a detrimental effect on the batteries, but I’m still getting 30 to 35 minutes of solid, continuous hardcore weed whacking with the metal wire cables. Back to the weight; you should definitely plan on pairing this tool with a harness if you plan on using it for long at all. I’d suggest to try to find some harnesses locally, so as to try their fit and feel. I’m 6’3” 280 pounds and the harnesses I’ve tried have been either been too short or too long and not able to adjust enough to fit. We ended up taking the harness that was too long, cutting the nylon straps to fit (over several iterations of adjustments), and then sewing them when the sweet spot was found. This trimmer will absolutely give you a good physical workout if used over the course of a workday. Vibration is nearly a non-issue. Relative to gas powered trimmers, vibration is not noticeable. It is constructed as a heavy duty trimmer. The shaft, head, and all pertinent parts are nice, thick metal. As mentioned above, I can’t comment on the included string head. As soon as I took mine out of the box, I removed the stock head and put on a heavy duty quick change head. This trimmer has no problems using a cutting blade. As with my use case of using the heavy duty string head with metal “string,” using a blade will consume battery life much quicker. The tool has the torque needed to cut through 2” saplings without much trouble. I can’t speak to exact battery life doing this, as I only cut down fifteen or so 2” and less saplings; after doing that I did do more weed trimming with the metal wire string. I haven’t used this tool with any attachments other than the weed trimmer - but I will definitely edit this review when I get the pole saw and shaft extension in a few weeks. With that said, I also cannot speak to the robustness of the the quick lock style attachment mechanism, either. I snapped the weed trimmer attachment in initially and have not removed it. Several of my family members have borrowed this beast, so it has seen in excess of 100 hours of real world, tough use case usage and hasn’t even hiccuped the first time. This tool is HIGHLY recommended, especially if you have invested in the LXT ecosystem already and even more highly recommended if you get this tool when it is offered with four 5Ahr batteries! Makita has a backpack (much too expensive, in my opinion) that holds four LXT batteries that can be used with tools that use either one or two batteries. If I were using this professionally, I would certainly purchase one of those, so as to double runtime. ... show more

  • Great trimmer! Sorry I waited so long to switch to a Makita
Style: Kit w/ String Trimmer Attachment
So, I bought this one after reading several reviews on the different makes and models. I wanted to start by addressing my experiences compared to complaints from other reviewers. -My previous trimmer was a Stihl FS50C 28cc gas trimmer. So this is my frame of reference for comparison. #1 The business end seems a little heaver than my previous trimmer. The battery end seem a bit heavier as well (it had 2 18V 6A/hr batteries so this is to be expected) This seems more balanced than my previous trimmer. It wasn't unduly heavy but it will wear you out lugging it around all day. But, mine came with a nice very adjustable shoulder strap. No need to buy one. Just use it for a bit and then adjust the strap until you don't notice muscle fatigue while swinging it. #2 Definitely seems more powerful than my previous 28cc trimmer. It wasn't stupid powerful though. I purposefully touched it to the fence and other things while on high, nothing crazy happened. I use it on the medium setting and it does everything I need it to do, and helps conserve power. #3 I didn't experience any issues with the bump feed head that came with it. I did go up in line size to 0.095" square line. This may cost a bit in battery life but if it cuts faster then it evens out. If you trim for a living you may have a good case for using your favorite line feed system but I saw no need to upgrade. #4 Battery life- Very pleased. I had to trim an overgrown small back yard at another property and this trimmer handled it magnificently. Grass was much too long to mow. Yard was about 40' X 40' and this trimmer nearly completed the entire thing. Had to swap batteries and finish the last 10% of the yard. I will normally use this trimmer to edge and trim my yard before mowing and I believe I will be able to complete this on one set of 6 A/Hr batteries based on how it did today. #5 Cost- This is the only negative for this trimmer. Makita is proud of their stuff! In their defense, it is a quality, durably constructed tool that looks like it is going to last. Wouldn't hurt to knock a $100 off each product in the line though (doesn't hurt to ask!). Long review but I am pleased with it. I love the interchangeable heads. Just purchased some additional heads. Love the versatility and I already own a crap load of Makita tools so it just made sense. Hope this helps. ... show more
