Been using it for weeks now and it's really good for what I need. The grass here is a bit thick but the string trimmer cuts it like butter on its strongest setting. It's not too loud so I don't cause too much noise in the neighborhood. It came with a charger, 4amphour battery and the string trimmer with a full head of string that I haven't had to replace after 10+ uses. I hope this keeps working for years to come. ... show more

    • I like it! Worth the investment.
First time out with the Makita XRU23SMI I am pleasantly impressed. I purchased this as an upgrade/down grade to my [rather heavy] DeWalt 60 volt DCS925. The Makita is especially lightweight but with ample power and duration. The included 4.0 AH battery was at 50% after 40 minutes trimming my 1 acre residential property. Mostly lawn edging, curbings, and fence line. Most impressive is how lightweight this unit is compared to the DeWalt. On straight runs along the fence line I was able to hold the trimmer in one hand and just walk along at a reasonable pace. I have not yet installed the string guard. I’m right handed and hold the trimmer on my right side and did not experience much debris being thrown back at me. Also, it’s easier to see the line of cut without the guard while holding the trimmer vertical when edging. After about 40 minutes I never needed to advance the string that came on the trimmer. The ergonomics is OK, it’s a little front heavy whereas holding it just by the middle handle it tends to tip forward aka, not balanced, but not really a problem. The trigger and trigger lock are well matched and it’s not a problem holding the trigger lock down while using the variable speed trigger. I only used the low speed/power setting and most of the time was throttling back somewhat on the trigger. Plenty of power and RPM. Probably will never need the higher setting. For big heavy brush I’ve still got the DeWalt. Although most all of my construction and landscaping tools are on the DeWalt platform, I already own a Makita 2.0AH battery and a charger for my Makita pin nailer so I was tempted to by the “bare tool” trimmer but the cost of this “kit” was less than the bare tool plus a separate 4.0 AH battery. So the kit was the best option. No Makita rebate on this trimmer BTW. Overall I’m very pleased with this purchase. I think the Makita brand tools, although expensive, are one of the best on the market today. ... show more

    • Decent trimmer with an easy to exchange string cartridge
I like Makita tools. I have purchased a few brands of string trimmer in the past and the Makita is my 3rd brand. I like that batteries are interchangeable between Makita tools. I like that the string cartridge is easy to install. I find all string trimmer a little unwieldy to use and the Makita is no different. I have a difficult time positioning it properly to cut the grass. Sometimes it won't easily cut clumps of crabgrass. Overall, it is a decent trimmer. ... show more

I absolutely love it. I had a Black & Decker 40 volt and this one is more powerful and has a lot better design. It handles .80 trimmer line which is sufficient for most everyone's needs and the design like I said is great. What an absolute piece of trash. First, for reference, we have a regular, less than a quarter acre lot in the suburbs, I'm not asking a lot from my yard equipment. I returned it and hope I don't get any hassle later, on the grounds that the battery is defective. After a full charge, it lasted around 10 - 15 minutes! Sure I could get a new one but everything else about this machine is terrible to me. Its too long for a shorter person and my arms were killing me just from the short venture I had. I found the weight somewhere claiming that with the battery its supposed to be 6.6 pounds but I don't believe it. Was easy to assemble, but I wanted to smash it trying to disassemble it. The bumper feed works well, and that's good because if the line isn't at max length, it doesn't cut worth anything! Having a speed setting is nice on paper, but again, on level one it barely cuts. The kickback shield is a joke, I got pelted with more dirt, rocks and grass than I ever have in the 6 years we have had our house. I came in with 3 cuts I could see and one on my face. Once I realized that the batter was legit dying I was in shock considering how much praise this thing got and the cost that came with it. I ended up finishing the yard with our old Black & Decker that cost us $80 and came with a blower! Even with it sqeeling and screaming with whatever is wrong with it, it still did better than this "top pick" Makita trash stick. ... show more

    • A Real Time Saver
Bought this Makita trimmer to replace my very old plug in Craftsman trimmer. Very happy with this purchase. The Makita trimmer has lots of power and cutting speed. The two speed switch and variable speed trigger are nice features that allow me to trim with ease. The tap to feed works well and overall I am delighted with this trimmer. Since I have other 18V Makita batter powered tools this was a great addition to my tool chest. I can easily trim my entire yard on a single charge, plus I save time. No more unwinding my extension cord and then rewinding it for storage. It truly is for me a real time saver. ... show more
