Description

Landscapers are demanding more cordless alternatives to gas-powered outdoor power equipment. Makita is meeting demand with an expanding line-up of cordless OPE, including the 18V X2 (36V) LXT Brushless Cordless String Trimmer, Tool Only (model XRU15Z). With zero emissions, lower noise and considerably less maintenance than gas-powered string trimmers, the 18V X2 (36V) LXT Cordless String Trimmer is a welcome solution for landscapers. It's powered by two fast-charging 18V LXT Batteries (sold separately) for maximum power and run time, but without leaving the strongly-preferred 18V battery platform. Electronic controls efficiently use battery energy to match the changing demands of the application for increased power and speed when needed. In addition, the string trimmer rotates in the same counter-clockwise direction as professional-grade trimmers, and uses industry standard spindles (M10x1. 25 LH) for added convenience. With the efficient Makita BL brushless motor, the trimmer delivers longer run time, more power and speed, and longer tool life. Makita's efficient BL Brushless motor is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50% longer run time per battery charge than similar non-brushless tools. The XRU15Z features a Makita-built Outer Rotor Brushless Motor with direct drive which provides high power and increased torque. The String Trimmer features Makita Extreme Protection Technology (XPT). XPT is a protective seal inside the tool, and is engineered for improved operation in harsh conditions by channeling water and dust from key internal components. It’s part of Makita’s expanding 18V LXT System, the world’s largest cordless tool system powered by 18V lithium-ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18V Lithium-Ion Batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita 18V LXT and Compact Lithium-Ion Batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside.

  • Powerful! Go makita
Have to clear out along a pond. Cattails are the worst, tough & fibrous, like to wrap around trimmer & jam it up. Gas you have shut off motor, untangle head, then restart. Plus all heat noise & exhaust. This thing fitted with Weed Warrior cutter head cuts ‘em down. If they get tangles, you hit reverse switch & if it doesn’t get off, it at least loosens so easy to pull off. Maybe a landscaper who runs 8 hrs straight still needs a gas trimmer, but I will run out of power long before trimmer does. Gas power is in trouble . ... show more

  • Better than gas!
What a wonderful string trimmer. Lightweight, nice balance, plenty of power. I found the string head a bit difficult to reload with line. I bought a Shindaiwa head that one can load without taking anything apart. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DRNIZ2C?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&redirectFromSmile=1&th=1 I can knock down some pretty heavy foliage and not slow the trimmer down much at all. I love how quiet, no 2-cycle mix to fuss with and light this trimmer is. Like most Makita products...this is a well designed, quality product. ... show more

  • XRU15 5 Stars but ditch the Tap-And-Go
Mikita does not appear to offer a rapid loader trimmer head to replace the standard tap-and-go but I immediately tossed the trimmer head and went with the Echo Rapid-Loader Trimmer Head P/N 21560062. This converts you to a standard fixed 8" line between 0,080-0.013" diameter (however note the XRU15 recommends .08-.09" if it matters to you). It does not specifically list the XRU15 as compatible but I noted several Mikita compatible units in the Echo manual and yes, when I converted the kit pack variant listed for those units, RL74, worked fine. There are probably others but this runs $30-ish and is a quality manufacturer. Once purchased you can buy pre-cut line or, if you want to stay with Mikita line, buy a spool and pre-cut you own. I purchased the XRU15 to replace a straight-shaft gas trimmer I used annually knock down annual grass on a rocky northern CA property for fire prevention purposes. There is no way I can do this job with a Tap-And-Go as the rocks tend to consume line. I chose the XRU15 (with four battery option) as reviews stated it was a powerful as gas. I would give it an 80% on that claim. However, the move away from needed fuel, carburetor maintenance, and noise and vibration of a gas unit makes the jump worth it. I've been a Mikia 18V customer for 10 years at least. Although I find them lacking in price competitiveness these days (i.e. I'd not likely go with Dewalt) they do offer high quality tools that will last a life time if used properly. This tool is definitely quality but pricey. ... show more

  • A Great Weed Eater For Home or General Purpose
aI bought this weed eater without batteries as I already own many Makita battery powered tools, so my current batteries are compatible. I was able to run the tool for about 2hrs nonstop before needing to grab another charged set of batteries. The line that comes installed is a decently sturdy nylon styled line, but I would recommend replacing later as the line will break often (Probably cause I suck at weed eating and I hit rocks all the time.) Easy to assemble, light weight with a shoulder strap, and simple controls, I would say this is one of the best weed eaters you can get for general home use. Honestly, it'll probably be just as good for commercial use as well just remember to bring a spare change of batteries and trimming line. If you're a Makita battery powered tools user, this is another perfect item for you collection. ... show more

  • Wow, awesome weed wacker! LOVE IT
I own nearly every single Makita tool, and thus far only been disappointed once. Ive been a little worried replacing my gas weed eater, and lawn mower, with cordless battery ones. Very hesitant in fact. But this spring, neither my gas craftsmans would start easily, so Im really sick of that. Those tools are only 2 summers old, and thats ridiculous. So I bought both Makita cordless versions of those, (not happy with mower, but thats another review) But THIS Makita weed eater/trimmer, absolutely awesome! I purchased the orange makita string, as many people said the green stuff it comes with is to weak...I have no idea why people say that. I have an acre of property with lots of stone landscape, wood fence, and above gardens etc... it way out performed my expectations running the green string it came with. After about 30 mins, all I could think was "This tool rocks my world" lol. WAAAY better than my gas craftsman one, I just love this tool. My only complaint is weight is a bit heavy, so def gotta use the shoulder strap. It did not bind up a single time, barely slowed down through heavy grass. thorn bushes, anything. Very impressed :) I cant say for battery life, as I used for 30 mins, and was done. But if a tool this powerful gets the job done without a battery change, for me thats great. ... show more

  • Great Trimmer
I've had this Makita trimmer for about a year now so feel like this is a good time to evaluate it. The power is excellent when compared to my previous battery powered trimmer. I don't even run it at full power and still it cuts weeds down with ease. The battery also lasts a really long time (twice as long as the previous Black and Decker I had). I can weed eat & edge around the house about 4 times on one charge, which gives you a total run time of roughly an hour. Maybe even a bit more. The Makita is also a very long trimmer (almost as tall as me and I'm 5'-11") and it takes a minute to get used to that. The biggest downside is putting new line into it. It can be frustrating to say the least. You eventually figure it out, but it's been a 20 to 30 minute exercise for me each time it happens with multiple attempts and failures. I always seem to forget the tricks I learned the previous time I did it. That's my only knock. Overall, very happy with the purchase. ... show more
