Description

Landscapers are demanding more cordless alternatives to gas-powered outdoor power equipment. Makita is meeting demand with an expanding line-up of cordless OPE, including the 18V X2 (36V) LXT Brushless Cordless String Trimmer Kit (model XRU15PT). With zero emissions, lower noise and considerably less maintenance than gas-powered string trimmers, the 18V X2 (36V) LXT Cordless String Trimmer is a welcome solution for landscapers. It's powered by two fast-charging 18V LXT Batteries for maximum power and run time, but without leaving the strongly-preferred 18V battery platform. Electronic controls efficiently use battery energy to match the changing demands of the application for increased power and speed when needed. In addition, the string trimmer rotates in the same counter-clockwise direction as professional-grade trimmers, and uses industry standard spindles (M10x1. 25 LH) for added convenience. Model XRU15PT is a kit and includes two fast-charging 18V LXT 5. 0Ah batteries and an efficient 18V Dual Port Rapid Optimum Charger. With the efficient Makita BL brushless motor, the trimmer delivers longer run time, more power and speed, and longer tool life. Makita's efficient BL Brushless motor is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50% longer run time per battery charge than similar non-brushless tools. The XRU15PT features a Makita-built Outer Rotor Brushless Motor with direct drive which provides high power and increased torque. The String Trimmer features Makita Extreme Protection Technology (XPT). XPT is a protective seal inside the tool, and is engineered for improved operation in harsh conditions by channeling water and dust from key internal components. It’s part of Makita’s expanding 18V LXT System, the world’s largest cordless tool system powered by 18V lithium-ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18V Lithium-Ion Batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection- equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita 18V LXT and Compact Lithium-Ion Batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside.

  • Great Trimmer
Style: Tool Only
I've had this Makita trimmer for about a year now so feel like this is a good time to evaluate it. The power is excellent when compared to my previous battery powered trimmer. I don't even run it at full power and still it cuts weeds down with ease. The battery also lasts a really long time (twice as long as the previous Black and Decker I had). I can weed eat & edge around the house about 4 times on one charge, which gives you a total run time of roughly an hour. Maybe even a bit more. The Makita is also a very long trimmer (almost as tall as me and I'm 5'-11") and it takes a minute to get used to that. The biggest downside is putting new line into it. It can be frustrating to say the least. You eventually figure it out, but it's been a 20 to 30 minute exercise for me each time it happens with multiple attempts and failures. I always seem to forget the tricks I learned the previous time I did it. That's my only knock. Overall, very happy with the purchase. ... show more

  • very impressive
Style: Tool Only
I live on a ranch. So i was skeptical. My go to weed eater is a stihl 91R string trimmer. Now, lets not mistake the two, they are not the same. But for just grass and weed of moderate growth around the house/barn/equipment etc this makita is pretty awesome and so much lighter and easier on the back. I was impressed. It's quite peppy. I have a slew of makita stuff and batteries, so you will need to get your chargers out and going. So far i am getting by with my double charger and 4 of the 5 amp batteries. I wear them out and need to swap before they get fully charged when it gets into the thicker/heavier stuff under electric fence etc, but hey nothing wrong with a beverage break here and there. ... show more

  • Great deal, great wacker
Style: Trimmer Kit
Love my super silent weedwacker. Does everything my gas one could, no hearing protection needed. I'm a hair short for the length at times (5'6"), but that might just be a learning transition from my other one. Not to heavy, and a great deal with the batteries and charger.

  • Fantastic Whacker Only If You Modify It !!
Style: Trimmer Kit
Arrived with two excellent quality Makita 5 amp batteries that were 25% or less charged and already mounted to the power block/rear-end. The fast charger with dual ports is able to rapid charge to 100% in 45 minutes but for longevity I chose to slow charge the new batteries using the slow 18sd type Makita charger. (IMHO: If you rapid charge new sleeping cells, they’ll get super hot and possibly lower the useful life of the middle cells.) The Makita box the tool arrived in is about 6 feet long and the square diameter of a good volleyball. There is no outer carton, and I think my package was sent drop-ship from Reno, NV to Los Angeles CA. It arrived in good shape via Parcel Select. Once opened you find a mass of thick corrugated cardboard fillers that hold everything together safely. Then you dig through the green Makita 16x12” drawstring bag to find about ten items you’ll need to assemble with super tiny printed pictures and Japanese English or other worldly languages. After assembly I realized that the pix showing a guy holding the machine on a shoulder strap ( included, but you may wanna get a full Makita harness if you’re serious or arthritic…) was actually instructions on the many custom places you WILL NEED TO ADJUST so your Whacker can be carried in relative comfort and good effectiveness. More on that, read on …. Using the machine is super easy. THIS MODEL has.a press-down micro CYCLE button that goes from Speed Good to Mighty Fast to OhMyLordy and back to Good. An auxiliary button allows a gentle REVERSE mode in case you got jammed up, which is virtually never. A LONG PRESS on the Cycle button shuts power completely. Note this: Once powered on, the trimmer stays up for a couple minutes before going bye; thus you merely press the safety grip and spin-up levers to work then pause to rest or drink Coors or verify string condition. On the 18v and basic 40v versions of theWhackers that have split shafts to fit other accessories, the power button must be cycled again after a pause. That’s inconvenient. Using: the Makita trimmer is very powerful and uses not much power in Speed-1 and even Speed-2. Speed-3 is maybe 20% faster than Speed-2 and will suck 40% yet more power, while Speed-2 feels like more than double Speed-1 and uses about 30% more juice, depending on how recalcitrant you find your angry, stubborn weed terrorists. Gripes: Two Allen keys are included to facilitate assembly and adjustments. This is awkward and clumsy as the keys cannot be turned a full circle without bumping into various obstructions. There are two storage locations molded into the power head and the handle-grip BUT only the small wrench can fit into either holder! THERE IS NO HOLDER THAT FITS THE LARGER WRENCH and you’ll need BOTH wrenches should you need ( and you WILL ) to make comfort/functional adjustments on the fly at the yard site. WHAT THE HECK, MAKITA PEOPLE ?!? Another more serious gripe: The deflection shield is some sort of cruel JOKE or PUNISHMENT as a reward for spending. $400 or so on this product; it is too small to do anything but cut string to length and to remind you where the clippings originate, now that your legs and feet are totally coated with mulch …. Therefore be sure to buy the “optional but needed” Brush Deflector kit, setting you back another $30-40. WHAT UP WITH THAT, MAKITA PEOPLE ?!? BTW, the big deflector is meant for other models and its thread is different. So you order from Mr Bezos and Makita the model 191B54-1 Deflector and then you hightail it to some hardware store and buy a pair of Allen cap screws size M5-0.8 x 25mm; now as you go to install this, your smaller Allen key will fit, so you’ll have less need of the troublesome larger Allen key. Last Big Beef: The string bump head is made by Sugihara something and it is small and has a tiny bump button and is weird to refill. You should also order from Mr Bezos, the STENS 385-288 “Type400 Fast Feed 5” Trimmer Head” and suddenly your 15PT trimmer performs just like or better than the $500+ Makita 17PT Commercial Trimmer. Part screws right in, no need to swap hardware, but keep the spinner plate and use the included rubbery washer/spacer. Since the STENS head is wider, the weight distribution is superior and your whacked will feel better balanced. In addition the bigger deflector allows longer string length so now your effective hacking circle will increase from about 15” to 21”! Were it not for these details, I’d give this product 4.8 stars. If you have a huge yard to hack, just order the 17PT and save yourself the trouble of making mods to your whacker. Plus I believe the 17 includes a better shoulder harness, not just a skinny strap …. ... show more

  • Better than gas!
Style: Tool Only
What a wonderful string trimmer. Lightweight, nice balance, plenty of power. I found the string head a bit difficult to reload with line. I bought a Shindaiwa head that one can load without taking anything apart. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DRNIZ2C?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&redirectFromSmile=1&th=1 I can knock down some pretty heavy foliage and not slow the trimmer down much at all. I love how quiet, no 2-cycle mix to fuss with and light this trimmer is. Like most Makita products...this is a well designed, quality product. ... show more

  • Easy to use
Style: Tool Only
This is well built. Very easy to restring. You don’t even have to take off the spool to string it. You just run the string through and wind it up. Batteries last a long time. Especially if you have it in the number two power setting, which is fine for doing edging like grass. When number three setting it cuts through the heavier weeds no problem. The string also last longer at the number two setting and doesn’t break off as often.Make sure though that you have the higher powered batteries 5.0 or greater and it will last a long time. ... show more

  • Not good in daylight.
Style: Trimmer Kit
Pricey, but Makita batteries last and last and last...String head let-out mechanism is a weak spot in this otherwise excellent trimmer. Battery life pretty good, I have no experience with this being used to gas trimmers. I do know running it at the middle setting saves a lot of juice.
