The 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Grass Shear with Hedge Trimmer Blade, Tool Only (XMU04ZX), is a compact and cordless solution for grass trimming and cutting. Easily change from grass shear to hedge trimmer for minor hedge trimming. The XMU04ZX has dual blade action and a wide 6-5/16” cutting width and delivers faster blade speed (2, 500 strokes per minute/SPM) than the previous model. When using a fast-charging 18V LXT 5. 0Ah battery (sold separately), users will get up to 200 minutes of run time on a single charge. It has 3-stage adjustment so the cutting height can be matched to the application. Additional features include a rubberized soft grip handle, tool- less blade changing, non-electrolyzed nickel-plated blades to resist staining and rusting, and a compact size at only 4. 1 lbs. (with battery, sold separately). It’s part of Makita’s expanding 18V Lithium-Ion System, the world’s largest cordless tool system powered by 18V lithium-ion slide-style batteries. Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger. Exactly what I needed! I'm using this for trimming of ornamental grasses. It is FANTASTIC for doing that. Very light and glides through the overgrown grass like a hot knife through butter. Very light with the small 18V 2Ah battery which lasted a very long time. My large job took 1.5 full batteries. It took a job that usually takes me 2-3 hours down to 30-45 min.! I can not speak to how it performs as a hedger, as I've not tried the hedger blade attachment, but it works great for light new growth trimming of hedges of all types. Highly recommended, and I can't believe I've been using hand clippers for these jobs for so long. Well worth the money IMO in time savings alone. Time=money ;-) ... show more

I just love this Makita with the hedge trimmer blade attachment. So much so that I purchased a second one for use in our Local Forest Garden. It does the heavy work around trees and bushes that we can't get into with our weed whackers. That way we can protect that drip irrigation lines. I use the hedge trimmer attachment for heavy grass. BUT BE CAREFUL. This is not a toy, and it is very easy to injure yourself if you don't pay close attention. The blades are extremely sharp. I managed to almost cut the tip of my thumb clear off. I like that Makita doesn't paint the blades of either the grass shears or hedge trimmer blades. Most everyone else does that, which makes the blades dull right out of the box and it's impossible to remove from every sharp cutting edge to fix. These Makita ones will dull quickly over time anyway, but at least brand new, they aren't worthless. Just keep them oiled during use for better wear. The build quality of the unit is much nicer than Ryobi and other brands. The drive mechanism, although it makes it slightly difficult to swap blades, is much more robust. It also doesn't let the blade unit loosen during use like the Ryobi version does. I will probably leave the hedge trimmer attachment on anyway. If I swap, it will be a good time to re-grease anyway. I also suggest that you use lithium-based EP #2 grease that contains moly in the spinning drive mechanism. There are sliding parts and moly is better at protecting those parts from wear. My only gripe is that I didn't receive the grass catcher attachment. It does show in the product's picture here, so I assume it comes with it. That's why I gave a one star hit, for the seller sending me an item with a missing attachment. It's not worth it to return it for that one missing part. ... show more

I love this tool. The first time you change the attachments it is a little tricky so use You Tube, but other than that it is great. It is compact and light weight which makes it much easier for trimming the hard to reach places.

As of this 2023 summer season, I have become a die-hard Makita fan thanks to contractors that were working at my house. They had a little Makita blower that they used to blow off sawdust from my porch at the end of every day and I fell in love with it. I got one as a requested Mother's Day gift and I use it to blow off my porches most every day - LOVE it! As a result of that love, I then purchased this trimmer as I needed a small trimmer that is easy to use and control for some shrubs I have that are not conducive to my husband's large trimmer (YIKES!). So, based on the personal reviews and the blower, I decided on this trimmer and I couldn't be happier! I used it last week to trim several shrubs and it did an amazing job! Light weight, easy to control, has great safety features and a Makita battery lasts way longer than other brands of battery operated tools I own. You get what you pay for and Makita is not cheap but it's WORTH IT on so many levels! Happy Customer here! ... show more

This is my first review on Amazon. Sorry it's long. I am angry for a couple reasons and feel responsible to let people know about this cordless grass shears. When I decided to buy Makita over lesser priced equivalents was, I wanted the best product and thought Makita would be the right choice that would do a great job. I am extremely disappointed in the performance of this product. I bought it to ONLY cut grass along a white fence so my weed wacker wouldn't damage the fence but more importantly throw grass against the fence staining it green. Initially I was very disappointed how badly the blades cut the grass. It sort of chewed the grass and it took too long to cut. My cheap traditional scissors did it so much better, but it was way too much for my hands. I felt I had no choice but persevere with the Makita, but by the end of summer the grass shears were barely cutting the grass at all. It cut like really bad scissors and the grass seems to go between the blade and it didn't cut but chewed it. Looking at the blades showed no obvious issues. The blades do rub together as expected. So why did it cut so poorly? When I called Makita customer service they wanted me to bring it to an authorized service center that was far from my home or mail it to them for inspection. I told him the product runs but it's not cutting. All they could say was send it in, but the blades are not covered under warranty so I would go through all the trouble only to be told there's nothing wrong with the actual product. A waste of my time and a waste of more than $200 since the shears and the battery together was over $200. Unfortunately they told me I waited too long for a return. I think they should have returned it but even if they are in the right not to refund my money I am still angry and disappointed in this company and its product and advise people to stay away from at least these Grass Shears. Personally I won't buy Makita. I think they should stand by their products especially if their product is poorly designed or just not working properly. ... show more

Fantastic trimmer and incredibly easy to use. I actually use the grass blade for trimming my boxwoods and other various plants, and for my landscape needs, I haven’t found a reason to switch to the hedge blade. That said, I’m glad to have it on hand just in case. The build quality is excellent — solid, well-balanced, and clearly made to last. Most of my hand power tools are Metabo, but I do own a couple of Makita battery-powered tools — and I’m happy to report that my existing Makita batteries work perfectly with this trimmer. ... show more

This has been a real nice addition to my yard tools. I purchased the extension handle (from another source) and it makes trimming a breeze. I'm 76 with 5 spinal surgeries making it difficult to impossible to bend. This tool has been a godsend. I highly recommend it.
